Stunning charity effort by Celtic fans

936

A big well done to everyone who participated in the efforts to send Vanessa Riddle to Philadelphia for crucial medical treatment.  The £500k required was raised yesterday.

Brogan Rogan’ brought the issue to the blog and Taggsybhoy arranged the CQN Music Quiz earlier this month, our first formal activity for Vanessa.  Penfold gave us a signed Celtic top at the quiz which raised an incredible £5000 on eBay (plus gift aid) from a Celtic fan who, quite simply, gets what following this club is all about.

Not only did he pay £5000 but he told us to keep the shirt and use it again!  We then raffled the shirt on eBay and raised almost £1400.  You are all part of an incredible story by an incredible support.

The draw for the signed shirt took place at Uefa headquarters in Nyon, you can watch the video of below and find out if you won.

Our thanks again to Andrew in Belfast for his tireless help with the site this week.  The new ‘whyte’ template is in place and we’ll continue to restore functionality.

    50,000 sell-out for charity match

Hateley and Walker will be in opposition again

Britain’s second largest football attendance of the weekend was a charity match in Glasgow.

And the success of the Auld Old Firm match is such that it is set to become a regular fixture at home and, possibly, abroad.

Ticket sales exceeded all expectations, with Celtic and Rangers fans ensuring that Sunday’s event at Ibrox has become a 49,866 sell-out.

Rangers included former favourites Brian Laudrup of Denmark and Englishmen Mark Hateley and Terry Butcher.

    Captured the imagination

Lining up for Celtic were strikers Frank McAvennie and Brian McClair, who spent 12 years at Manchester United, and Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy.

Only Ally McCoist, Rangers’ record scorer with 350 goals, and legendary Ibrox goalkeeper Andy Goram, now with Motherwell, are still playing professionally.

The match was being played as the Old Firm present stars enjoy a winter break, but it captured the imagination of both sets of fans.

Only one match in Britain over the weekend surpassed the attendance of almost 50,000 – the English Premiership clash between Manchester United and Aston Villa at Old Trafford.

    Lot of passion

Former Ibrox striker Hateley said before the game: “It will be a good spectacle, although obviously played at a slower pace.

Old Firm games always arouse passion

“But, in the tradition of Old Firm games, there will be a lot of passion involved and a lot of good football.”

Andy Walker was looking forward to teaming up again with former Celtic strike partner McAvennie.

“We will all want to win it, so I am sure it will be keenly contested,” he said.

The two Glasgow clubs had agreed to give £1 for every ticket sold to Cash For Kids.

    Unprecedented success

Ibrox commercial director Martin Bain believes that the sum of almost £50,000 for the chairty can now be increased by £25,000.

“The response of the fans has surpassed our greatest expectations,” he said.

“Now we have established that the fixture is an unprecedented success, there is no reason why this match cannot be an annual event alternating between Ibrox and Celtic Park.

“Many of the players involved have expressed a desire to expand the Auld Old Firm concept and it is our intention to continue to promote the initiative in areas of interest overseas.”

Rangers squad: Chris Woods, John Brown, Graham Roberts, Terry Butcher, Tom Forsyth, Ally Dawson, Trevor Steven, Bobby Russell, Ray Wilkins, Robert Prytz, Mark Hateley, Nigel Spackman, Brian Laudrup, Andy Goram, Mark Walters, Neale Cooper.

Celtic squad: Pat Bonner, Danny McGrain, Tommy Burns, Peter Grant, Mick McCarthy Alan McInally, Andy Walker, Brian McClair, Billy Stark, Frank McAvennie, Roy Aitken, Willie McStay, Tosh McKinlay, Owen Archdeacon, Jim McInally, Frank McGarvey

SFA RANGERS’ PROBE MAN’S CELTIC CONNECTION – Exclusive

STEWART REGAN’S Scottish Football Association’s so-called Independent Panel to look into the Craig Whyte-Rangers fiasco has links to Celtic.

In fact one member of the Regan appointed SFA Panel has a link right to the very heart of the Parkhead boardroom.

Bob Downes is the man with the Celtic connection!

Downes is described by the SFA as being a former director of BT Scotland who is now chairman of the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency.

But I can reveal that when Downes was director of BT Scotland he shared the boardroom with Ian Livingston….

And that this is the same 47-year-old Kelvinside Academy educated Livingston who declares his main passion is Celtic and who…

    …IS A CELTIC plc DIRECTOR.

It’s another astonishing blunder by SFA chief executive, Regan, who of course sits on the SFA professional board with fellow SFA director Peter Lawwell, the Celtic chief executive, who also sits on the Celtic plc board alongside Downes’ former fellow BT Scotland director, Livingston.

Which raises the question as to just who it was inside the SFA who recommended Bob Downes to Regan?

Regan has only been at the SFA for 18 months and still spends much of his time in his north of England family home, as his Twitter account clearly shows.

So, just how has he managed to become acquainted with all the movers and shakers of Scottish business life in such a short time?

My view is that it is impossible for him to know all the highways and byways. Regan must therefore be leaning heavily on advice from those who are at the heart of the Scottish business community and who have his ear.

There are a number of people who fall into this category, but few are as close to Regan as Celtic chief executive, Lawwell, who shares the SFA boardroom with Regan and the Celtic boardroom with Livingston, who in turn sat around the same BT Scotland boardroom table as Bob Downes, appointed by Regan to sit on the Independent Panel which is probing Rangers.

Let me make this clear. There is no suggestion of any impropriety on Regan’s part. Like his other pal, Henry McLeish, Regan is involved in a muddle, not a fiddle.

But for the benefit of all concerned, particularly Regan, but not forgetting M’Lord Nimmo Smith who could see his position compromised, Bob Downes should stand down…..

    NOW!

  11. Shieldmuir Celtic on

For Celtic fans of a certain age, John Cairney’s book ‘The Sevenpenny Gate’ is a good read.I had only one disagreement with his views. In the last chapter he picked two teams of his favourite Celtic Greats and managed to leave out Bobby Murdoch, who was the greatest of the Lisbon Lions in the view of no less a person than Jock Stein.

I agree with you about Bobby. I thought that he Jinky and Bertie were the best ever for Celtic in my time. However, I do know that guys who played professionally at the time thought that Bobby lennox was the man they wanted in their team.

But I can reveal that when Downes was director of BT Scotland he shared the boardroom with Ian Livingston….

I can see his point, he has obviously suffered some form of Timmy contamination by sitting on the same board as a Celtic fan……………hahahahaha

This is a live debate on HMRC and football, Rangers covered extensively. It’s just about to finish but you can click ‘watch from start’

There is a very strong political move to save Rangers. Importance to society etc. I do get the impression though that HMRC are not prepared to a silly CVA and they are batting away, politely, a lot of this, but serious pressure is being applied.

  16. I’ve been following the growing story of police investigations into Craig Whyte’s affairs – or is that alleged activities? Wouldn’t want to start any new rumours now.

Clearly money has been moved here, there and everywhere and the administrators are having some trouble putting it all together. Whether anything illegal has actually taken place has still to be established, of course. But there is a growing media portrayal of Rangers FC PLC (in administration) as a victim in all of this – and that worries me.

You can just hear the arguments being practiced: Poor wee Rangers, duped by big bad Craigy. The club hasn’t actually done anything wrong, just got itself bought by the wrong man. And it would be unfair to the supporters to see the club go to the wall because of one one man’s actions.

The sooner the Big Tax Case reports the better as far as I’m concerned. That will get attention away from the current financial issues and back onto the meat of the matter. Craig Whyte didn’t set up or run EBTs. Criag Whyte didn’t benefit from EBTs. Rangers players benefited financially and Rangers as a club benefited massively. And they did so by avoiding the tax payments that every other well run club was making.

Let’s get the massive bill on the table and then we can move away from the club as a victim and back to where we should be: the club as a cheat that has been caught. And it must now be punished for its past cheating.

I just had a customer who states that they suffer from Anxiety & Depression.

    In their medical they state the following;

They have never been referred to a specialist for this condition.

Has low mood, anxiety and trouble sleeping.

Last took a panic attack when he heard Rangers were going into administration. He states that he felt strange, anxious and had to go to his room. He took a diazepam to calm down and lay on his bed.

He has no current thoughts of self harm. He has been in prison due to assault charges and offensive weapons. This is due to incidents with enemies.

However, he is never violent towards his parents or his brother.

I read this in the Herald recently,

A little girl from Glasgow has a rare form of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia called Philadelphia Positive. She is expected to need a bone marrow transplant to save her life. Sadly whilst 90% of northern european patients will find a match only 40% of patients from an ethnic background will.

Ayesha is mixed race. The family have had a worldwide hunt to find a match with no success so far.

The family are launching a drive to get as many people to join the bone marrow donor register of the Anthony Nolan UK Cancer Charity. The more people on it the better chance of finding a match. The family wants to raise £150k towards the cost of processing potential donors as it costs £100 for each person who volunteers for a test.
