Stunning work by Celtic supporters

689

Five years ago when CQN’er Kano was confined to hospital with a debilitating illness Pablophanque was first to issue the call, “We need to raise the money to bring Kano home”.  In the weeks which followed the Bring Martin Home campaign launched.  The campaign succeeded and then some; the Kano Foundation is its lasting legacy.

While working in Holland in May 2011 Pablophanque took ill suddenly and died a few days later, leaving two young-adult children to deal with matters a long way from home.  As the news filtered through of his death, the call went out in the comments section here to raise money to bring his remains home.  One day later Pablo’s son was told the money was there and to confirm arrangements.

Pablo’s estate has recently been settled and his son and daughter wanted to repay the generosity shown to them when they needed it most.  Mary’s Meals are now in receipt of £4500 from them towards our CQteN Malawi School Kitchen Appeal.  It is an enormous gesture by two young people and shows the level of appreciation they have to those who helped them in 2011.

Raising money is hard and I remember telling Pablo his idea was ambitious, to say the least.  There has never been a spontaneous movement like Bring Martin Home and the Kano Foundation.  Many of those who made the call for Pablo were inspired by Bring Martin Home.  The cumulative impact of this generosity is quite stunning.

My thanks to Pablo’s son, daughter and brother for this fantastic support, inspired, as it was, by the wider Celtic community. I never use the ‘Greatest fans in the world’ line, largely as I don’t think there is much competition, but the Celtic support are among the finest human beings you could hope to meet.

Thanks also to everyone who booked a seat or table for the CQteN St Patrick’s Day Party at the Kerrydale Suite on Friday 14 March, where we hoped to raise the bulk of the money for the school kitchen.  If you want know what it’s all about, read Friday’s article.

i have long complained of the harm that seeding and selective drawing is doing to football

the rich get richer and poor get further and further away.

just look at Englad too, the first time in a long time that they have had to face a few decent sides and they are crappin their wee lilywhites

i onder how the likes of barca would get on if they were unseeded in a group with another pot 1 team and a strong pot 2 team plus 1 other

it would be interesting (no slight on barca in particular, even theough they owe hundreds of millions) same comment applies to man city and man utd etc too

they get a 15 million quid walkover and a virtually guaranteed qualification

    Enough!

  15. Further to my last post, I’ve just been reminded it was 1st v 2nd not a straight draw, so there was only 64 possible ties.

    I reckon it’s faked.

  16. Champions League.

Teams from the same country can’t play each other until the Quarter Finals

  17. Bom Dia,

… as usual (sadly) no Celtic related news to report from Brasil, so mosey on by if you were hoping for a “Neymar second thoughts about Barca” story.

What follows is just a lot of guff about what’s happening here in Brasil today…………….

As is near always the case here, just when you thought it was all over …. last weekend the Serie A relegation spots were finalized (four go down) with two Rio teams – Vasco (44 pts) and Fluminense (46pts) amongst them. Amongst those escaping the drop on the final day were Portugesa (48 pts) and Flamengo (49 pts). However, it turns out that both Portugesa and Flamengo fielded ineligible players (not fully served their suspensions) for the final games. Now both, if found guilty, could stand to lose 4 pts. So depending on today’s tribunal it could all change – again.

The Tribunal (who have “guaranteed” the whole matter, including appeals, will be resolved before 2013 finishes) is set to sit at 17:00 tonight (Rio time) and the pitchforked mobs are assembling outside already. My (cynical view) is that it’ll be no surprise if some sort of dodgy quadrangular play-off is proposed as a solution. Whatever. Don’t be surprised to see more headlines of rioting in the streets of Rio tomorrow.

Meanwhile, at the top end of the table the format of next year’s Libertadores now looks a lot clearer. Botafogo and A.Paranã will have to play an eliminator round against Dep.Quito and Sporting Cristal respectively. Thereafter, the group stages will look:-

Group 1 – Velez Sarsfield, Bolivia 2nd (Strongest or San José), Peru winners (R. Garcilaso or Universitario) and Cristal / A.PARANÂ

    Group 2 – U.Española, San Lorenzo, I José Teran and D.Quito / BOTAFOGO.

    Group 3 – C.Porteño, O Higgins, D.Cali and Chile 3 (U.Catolica, U de Chile, Iquique or Palestino) / Guarani (PAR)

    Group 4 – ATLETICO-MG, Nacional, Zamora and M.Norelia/Santa Fe

Group 5 – CRUZEIRO, Defensor, Peru 2 (R. Garcilaso or Universitario) and Carcas/Lanús

    Group 6 – N.Old Boy’s, GREMIO, A.Nacional and O.Petroleo/Nacional

Group 7 – Bolivar, FLAMENGO, Emelec and León

Group 8 – Penãrol, Arsenal, D.Anzátegui and Santos Laguna.

Oh, and just to put things in perspective, after a further two fatalities on Saturday (there was an earlier fatal accident in March), work has been suspended on the Arena de Amazonas in Manaus. No indications for how long so far.

Lots of sympathy around re spending money on players, good money, who almost from first sight never look like making it – particularly forwards. Very disheartening.

On the other hand…Wanyama, Hooper, Ki, VVD, FF etc. Most of us never heard of them…

Guess in the financial range the club has decided to shop in (and that’s a separate issue) there will be hits and misses. I still harbour hopes for Baldie. When he’s played he’s either scored or seriously threatened to score. Pukki needs to show more, much less confidence about him.

The hesitation about signing from S Premiership….although they can see the targets week in and out I’d suggest there is a doubt about judging when the opposition is often weak. Perhaps players showing up well when they play us is a better indicator. From memory don’t remember Johnny R being prominent against Celtic. That said I think I would have gone for him at the price. If/once the like of DU, Aberdeen and maybe Hibs can create clear water from the rest and really push on and maybe get into the Europa proper it would be clearer to judge?

I think this also applies to our younger players…the test at youth level is not high enough which is why the Next Gen & YCL is so good for us.

The other thing is foreign leagues will almost always be judged stronger than the SP. If for example, Pukki was judged good enough for a punt in the Bundesl then that maybe sets a kind of standard? Evidence proves this judgement has its flaws…Loovens, Derk (probably) etc. But it is still not unreasonable to make the judgement.

As far as ST prices are concerned, I don’t much care since without it I would have to have given mine up after being in with the first batch when Fergus got Rod to open the new N Stand! I’m happy to believe the board did feel that the fans were entitled to something back while also being aware of the lower take up in the previous couple of years.

In the short term I want us in the CL annually and into the last 16. Beyond that I’d aim to WIN a group which to me would outstrip anything so far no matter what then followed in the last 16!

    ————————————————————————-

I think there will always be hits and misses – no matter what financial range the club shops in – there are never any guarantees. At the end of the day, though, they are looking for value and if the scouts cannot sign up to £5M for a particular player then it won’t happen. What this comes down to is the judgement of a number of people in the club – there’s no way money gets spent without signoff from a number of parties re: different aspects of the decision. I too hope that Amido and Teemu both make it along with the others we recently signed.

You make a good point regarding players from Scotland and how they are judged. I agree with you there. I think there may be another point to that though – the style of the Scottish game and Celtic’s particular place in it are also factors. Generally we have to break down the defences of physical teams who have no qualms about kicking lumps out of us. There are more than one or two players who have looked to be excellent prospects but who were not suiter to either the environment or the style of play required.

It would be good to get the inside story on why we didn’t sign J. Russell. I’m no judge of player TBH but a lot of people seem to rate him.

Re: season tickets – perhaps I am stereotyping the Celtic board by now allowing that they may have let some drop of emotion into their reasoning!
