Stunning work by Celtic supporters

689

Five years ago when CQN’er Kano was confined to hospital with a debilitating illness Pablophanque was first to issue the call, “We need to raise the money to bring Kano home”.  In the weeks which followed the Bring Martin Home campaign launched.  The campaign succeeded and then some; the Kano Foundation is its lasting legacy.

While working in Holland in May 2011 Pablophanque took ill suddenly and died a few days later, leaving two young-adult children to deal with matters a long way from home.  As the news filtered through of his death, the call went out in the comments section here to raise money to bring his remains home.  One day later Pablo’s son was told the money was there and to confirm arrangements.

Pablo’s estate has recently been settled and his son and daughter wanted to repay the generosity shown to them when they needed it most.  Mary’s Meals are now in receipt of £4500 from them towards our CQteN Malawi School Kitchen Appeal.  It is an enormous gesture by two young people and shows the level of appreciation they have to those who helped them in 2011.

Raising money is hard and I remember telling Pablo his idea was ambitious, to say the least.  There has never been a spontaneous movement like Bring Martin Home and the Kano Foundation.  Many of those who made the call for Pablo were inspired by Bring Martin Home.  The cumulative impact of this generosity is quite stunning.

My thanks to Pablo’s son, daughter and brother for this fantastic support, inspired, as it was, by the wider Celtic community. I never use the ‘Greatest fans in the world’ line, largely as I don’t think there is much competition, but the Celtic support are among the finest human beings you could hope to meet.

Thanks also to everyone who booked a seat or table for the CQteN St Patrick’s Day Party at the Kerrydale Suite on Friday 14 March, where we hoped to raise the bulk of the money for the school kitchen.  If you want know what it’s all about, read Friday’s article.

Yes, I noticed the post about how the number of possible combinations is actually smaller than it looks at first sight.

Surely after all the fuss over the World Cup they’d have to be really brassnecked to do something so blatant?

  4. Auldheid,

Great post and got me thinking, is it time to stop “dreaming the imposable dream”, in this case, competing with teams from other leagues with vastly superior financial income and get back to basics and ploughing much of our European income into the Scottish game?.

As far as I can see, the only way we will improve is if the league we are in improves. At the moment any success we have in Europe is counter productive to the environment we play in 95% of the time, the richer we get the wider the gap is for Dundee utd, Aberdeen etc.

It is incredibly two faced of us to complain about the miss-match of fiancés across Europe when we have the exact same scenario here at home.

From the boards point of view where is the sense in spending upwards of £4m on a player @ £30k a week for the sake of six matches?, where even then the odds are stacked against us making the last 16.

I, along with most fans, crave European football and playing along with the big boy’s, the craving has become almost an obsession due to the lack of compaction the rest of the time.

Make no mistake, if we had a competitive league Celtic park would be full more often than not, regardless of the elements.

My thought process is fast turning towards forgetting about Europe (for a wee while anyway) and use our considerable resources (in Scottish terms) to improve our league.

It will take time and supporters patience (I know!) but I really see no alternative, or quick fix for that matter.

Reduce the ticket’s even more, compensate the loss of revenue by reducing the squad size and salary level. Start trusting our youths and playing them more often.

Unless the custodians have knowledge of an escape route then I see no other choice than to make big, and brave, decisions based on what’s best for the Scottish game as a hole because looking after only ourselves is not serving us to well at the moment.

I would much rather see comparative football on a weekly basis than settling for six games a year where we start each match just hoping not to get beat.

While I still think it’s fake, they’ve gone to quite great lengths to make it look convincing.

There’s only 5 minutes between the first and last tie being posted, which unless they were pretty lucky and managed to get the correct ones quite closely grouped, isn’t enough time to put in all the other ties in between.

However they may have set it up elsewhere and just copied and pasted them in.

Remember last year the entire group stage draw came out in the rehearsal the same as it did live. That was a bit odd but it was kind of laughed off as a huge coincidence.

    Does make you wonder though.

yes, I checked the times of those tweets, they are close in time. But maybe if you worked out the possible permutations you’d then tweet them in groups. As far as I can tell the actual draw didn’t come out in the same order as the tweets but I didn’t see it so am going by the official published draw for that.

Napoleon was his character name but the crew and cast just called him Asda.

  11. 67Heaven,

No jokes here. My first option would be to leave for pastures new, however that seems no closer than it was 15 years ago, so what’s the alternative?. Celtic park is emptying almost as fast as the hun’s bank account (do they have one?).

We need competition on a weekly basis to provide a worthwhile product imo.

What do you suggest, or are you happy with the way things are developing?.

    HailHail

  12. Celtic Park isn’t for Christmas, never has been and is always emptier,

    – same again for the Diets this Saturday.

Thereafter we’re on an upward turn in 2014.

  13. Morton had about 4 times the amount of fans that Hibs had on Saturday, and that was a midweek game.

is the latest to comment along these lines:

“Celtic park is emptying almost as fast as the hun’s bank account ”

Last Saturday there were about 30,000 at the ground on a truly horrible day.

At every other game, the crowd has been in excess of 40,000 and occasionally 50,000.

If we really were losing support as consistently and for as long as some have been claiming, we would be down to about 10,000 by now.

I really don`t know why some people let their passion for Celtic ( I am being kind here) cause them to do the MSSM`s work for them.

    JJ

    !!Bada Bing!!

Thanks. I had forgotten how many people on here continue to post the MSSM nonsense.

  17. Such an uplifting article.

Well done, Pablo’s Kids – you are a a credit to him and it’s obvious his memory and good-heartedness lives strong in both of you.

  18. a grand gesture,wonderful…..hope there invited to the Cqn..anniversary ball, where they can hear our cheers…..no one walks alone in this family …braw

  19. Jungle Jim,

MSSM’s work?, hmmm, first game of the season, unfurling the flag, large section of the ground closed and has been all season with the exception of Europe, inspite of reduced st prices. There is a big decline in attandance, to suggest otherwise is being blinkered….and that’s being kind.

In saying that, there is a fair enough point made that crowds are simply returning to what would be considered as the ‘norm’, and I am in no way suggesting the crowds are poor. There are also different factors which affect crowd’s, Christmas time abviously being one, but so is the lack of compatition.

I stay in what would be considered a “Celtic area”, the amount of bhoy’s and ghirls that no longer go that used to go is shocking, or at least it should be.

Deny it’s happening or try and reverse the decline?

    HailHail

I was thanking you for the information and then being critical of those who continually lift nonsense from the MSSM and give it publicity on here.

Reduce the prices even more?……to what?

ItsPLC policy that is the problem not ticket prices.

If you want grass roots football then may I suggest the Juniors? The reserves and youths you talk about all come from Lennoxtown…….how does that pay for itself on reduced ticket prices?

Its the old socialist paradox on here. We want a team that can beat anyone in the CL……….essentially for free.

Theres no free lunch in the world, the only debate is who gets what size of the portions……thats the real politics of professional football.

In the early 1960’s my Grandfather worked for a take home pay of around £11 per week I am led to believe. Celtic and the orcs players all had pubs, hotels and new cars back then (Allan McGraw lived next door to us) something that was only available to ordinary people should you win the pools.

The best schoolboys and Juniors have always wanted to play professional football because it beats the shit out of actually working at a real job………..money, glamour, cars, businesses

Stein, Shankly, Busby et al didn’t think mining was so great did they? Even Ferguson who had an infinitely better lot than a miner when he was a tool maker bolted as quick as he could.

I’m not saying miners etc are not honourable and hard working but please…….offer some transparency please.

As and when we are an independent country and we can make our own employment and immigration laws that will allow us to bring 16 year olds from Brazil and other places…just like Portugal, Belgium, Holland etc instead of having to ask London all the time then we can think about trying to find the Ronaldo’s, Ronaldinho’s, Deco’s etc.

We cannot afford to be in big debt……our market isn’t large enough

We cannot afford big wages……our market isn’t big enough

We cannot afford the best players…our market isn’t big enough

We don’t get the TV revenue we should……our market isn’t big enough

Our more pressing need is to avert apathy for the rest of the season, arrest the decline of falling attendances and find a way of allowing the GB back into the ground.

ITS CFC PLC POLICY THAT IS THE PROBLEM
