A RAGING Ronny Deila has branded Steve McManaman as “stupid” for comments he made live on BT Sport after Celtic’s 3-3 draw with Inter Milan on Thursday night.
The former Liverpool and England international claimed the Hoops shouldn’t have gone on a lap of honour after the Europa League epic at Parkhead.
His summing-up was hardly welcomed by Deila, who had seen his team recover from 2-0 and 3-2 down to keep the tie alive in front of 60,000 fans who gave them a standing ovation at the end.The Norwegian said: “Steve McManaman was a big player, he was one of my favourites when he was playing, but for me this is so stupid to say.
“One of Celtic’s values is respect. Sometimes when you lose you have to say congratulations to your opponent. Also, when you don’t get the result you want and the fans are unbelievable you have to thank them. The fans appreciate that, too.
“They helped us so much in the game and it’s important the players and the staff, everybody, show they are grateful.”
McManaman proved elusive when he was asked to explain his remarks.
He snapped at one reporter: “I’m at an airport. I’ve not got time for this.”Deila added: “For me, McManaman saying this is an ‘expert’ having to say something to get some headlines.”
