Subjective ethics from some in Scottish football

316

What grates with me is that the issue on how to end the Scottish league season is portrayed as an ethical question.  If so, ethics are remarkably subjective.

How would I feel if Newco had not imploded (more on that if/when the time comes) so magnificently in the weeks?  Pretty upset that they because of the slimmest of leads, they were able to ‘Stop the Nine’ without Celtic having a chance to turn things around.  A cherished piece of our narrative over these last nine years would have vanished into thin air.

Conversely, what would Douglas Park have to say on the matter, if Steve Gerrard was able to cope with the likes of Hamilton Accies at home, would he be campaigning for the season to become null and void?  Don’t be ridiculous.  They would rename one side of the ground the 2020 Stand.

Anyone who claims they would not advocate the exact opposite view, if their team was due to win/lose a league instead of lose/win is a liar or a self-deceiving fool.  This is not an ethical question and anyone who suggests it is, is being unethical.  It is a pragmatic question:

Will this make you a winner or a loser?
Does this make sense for Scottish football as a whole?

The winners and those without any skin in the game voted Yes.  Only losers voted No.  If Celtic were behind Newco I would want the league null and void to allow us to win nine-in-a-row next season, for purely selfish reasons, not because a moral authority understood it to be right.

Talking about ethics, respect to Roma players, who have agreed to take no pay for four months, while making up shortfalls in non-player wages from their own pockets.  Off the scale ethical standards.  More on this, and Celtic player and executive pay cuts, later.  Many clubs will fall during the crisis, Roma won’t be one of them.

i’m not sure that Sport has any ethics at all. Rules maybe, ethics no.

I’m sure we can all come up with examples of Sportsmen or sports that were ethics free. I’ll start.

That’s me being as frank and honest as possible, we want to get a semblance of normality back into people’s lives for all sorts of reasons as quickly as possible but we cannot do that in a way that risks a resurgence of this virus.

“I know that is not good news for the majority of our population that have sport as a really important part of their lives but it would be wrong to give a false expectation right now about an early resumption of football matches, rugby matches or large-scale sporting events like that.”

The German Bundesliga is currently in training ahead of a return to closed-door league action, supported by widespread testing.

But Sturgeon said closed-door matches are risky not because of the players inside the ground but because of the fans watching outside.

She added: “In terms of playing behind closed doors, clearly there are issues there, in terms of does that clearly take away the risks?

    ……

She may have a point about Closed Door games being on TV…….especially on Sky/BT etc….as many who dont have it, will simply go to a friends hoose to watch it, especially with pubs being closed ?

A home tie against Celtic in the Scottish Cup means that the club’s medium term future is secure but it’s the impact of measures to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 that have made a significant difference to the financial outlook of the club.

In an astonishing statement the club detailed why the government’s furlough scheme, which pays 80 per cent of wages up to £2500, means that they will have better results for the season than if had games had gone ahead.

It read: “The recent termination of the football season has resulted in some financial stress around the divisions and our club will be no different fairly soon. We would like to stress that having recently hosted Celtic FC in the William Hill Scottish Cup that the club is not in any immediate danger.

“The fact that we benefited from that financially successful cup run masks the underlying operations of the club. Subject to a number of factors that remain a risk, we expect to deliver a profit for the season, which will be our best result for many years. That is the positive side of where we are at the moment. It might seem odd in the circumstances, but with the benefit of government measures around the virus and support from sponsors, we will lose less money in the final three months of the financial year by not playing our final eight fixtures.”

The link on COVID threat discusses issues around mid-March, just before the lockdown. It was an example of how slow and loath the UK government were to introduce lockdown measures. It was covered in the papers at the time:-

    ———————————————-

“Just days before U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a nationwide lockdown to contain the coronavirus epidemic, health officials in Britain quietly lowered the official threat level for the pandemic, saying the COVID-19 virus did not meet the criteria to qualify as a “high consequence infectious disease” (HCID).

U.K. health officials had tentatively identified COVID-19 as an HCID in late January, but said in a March 19 statement it was rescinding its interim decision.

“This was based on consideration of the U.K. HCID criteria about the virus and the disease with information available during the early stages of the outbreak,” the statement said.

“Now that more is known about COVID-19, the public health bodies in the UK have … determined that several features have now changed; in particular, more information is available about mortality rates (low overall), and there is now greater clinical awareness and a specific and sensitive laboratory test, the availability of which continues to increase.”

The statement said a government body that deals with pathogens agreed the virus did not merit the HCID designation, but also added that the risk to the U.K from the outbreak “has been raised to high.”

Five days later, Mr. Johnson — who critics say was slow to respond the global pandemic — said in a national address that Britons faced “a moment of national emergency” and ordered U.K. residents to stay in their homes and limited public activities and nonessential businesses for the next three weeks at least.

Through Wednesday morning, according to government figures, Britain reported 9,529 positive cases of coronavirus out of just over 97,000 people tested and 463 virus-related deaths.

Skeptics of the severity of the virus have promoted the March 19 move on Twitter as proof that doomsday scenarios and severe economic measures being implemented worldwide are an overreaction.

“You’d have thought [the change] would be reported!” one British poster tweeted. “I wonder if they’ve agreed not to so that people still take it seriously and comply with lockdown.”

But others said the lower designation cleared the way for broader treatment options, as COVID-19 cases could now be treated at ordinary hospitals and not just as the few specialty infectious disease centers.

British health officials say a number of criteria must be met for the HCID designation, including a high case-fatality rate; no effective containment or treatment; difficulty in rapid detection; the ability to spread in the community and within health care settings; and the need for population-wide measures to “ensure [the disease] is managed effectively, efficiently and safely.”

To those of a tory persuasion…

    Simple question…

Are PM Johnson and his Tory Govt…”BLAMELESS” for the EXTENT of COVID-19 in the UK ?

A simple YES or NO will suffice.

    =============================================================

    Ok , Jimmy.

I`ll bite , in spite of the blatantly unreasonable restriction you demand …….

    The answer is ” I don`t know ” . ” The Extent ” is a meaningless concept .

Do you mean the spread ?

Now. Do you have the cojones to answer this simple question without your unreasonable restriction ?

Are the Tory party to blame for the introduction of the Covid virus to UK ?

Now , craving your indulgence , who or what is responsible for the CREATION of the virus ?

And who is ultimately responsible for the subsequent export of said virus ?

  17. “It has nearly been four weeks since British Prime Minister Boris Johnson made an unprecedented address to the nation at 8.30pm on March 23, announcing that new measures were being introduced to put the UK in a state of lockdown.”

    TET,

That COVID-19 HCID notice was last updated on 21st March and could be revised. It states that it has low mortality rates – tell that to those who have lost loved ones that they couldn’t visit and to frontline NHS staff.

When this is eventually over life will have changed for the majority of frontline NHS staff with many of them developing the equivalent of PTSD. I doubt if we can comprehend half of what they are going through.

    God bless them.

  18. Gene-SFTB-Pog

A classification is exactly that , they don’t classify it as a major problem, the status would also be changed if they now thought that it was a problem, they obviously don’t as papers are being produced on a daily basis.

But don’t let the facts get in the way.

No problem, you believe what you believe, a simple check on the mortality rates will tell you that there are even less deaths this year than the average for the past years, what you will find as well is there are way less pneumonia and other respiratory related deaths this year.

I have lost four close friends in the past few weeks and they were all classed as CV-19 deaths when none were, three died from a heart attack the other had cancer, their respective families have lodged complaints but it’s falling on deaf ears.

There are many many more government and medical journals that will confirm this.

Dr Fauci wrote a paper on it a few weeks back, it’s in the New England medical journal, telling his fellow professionals that the death rates were on par with the seasonal flu @ 0.37%

Even back in 2017 Fauci told a medical conference that there was going to be an outbreak this year, amazing how he knew that right enough, you would have thought that the administrations of the world would have prepared for it.

It seems that the American media have cottoned on to this and are slaughtering the government for not being prepared, when in reality they should be asking how Fauci knew there was going to be a pandemic, but that’s politics for you.

Even the much heralded Dr Michael Ryan from the WHO has confirmed that lockdowns do NOT work unless other track and trace criteria is carried out, so it’s pointless.

    My last on this.
