Substantial base for Celtic to build

198

We were four games into last season before we kept a clean sheet, and that was a dreadful 0-0 at home to St Johnstone, who rued a gilt-edged chance to leave with the win.  Ross County, Aberdeen and Kilmarnock all scored against Celtic in their earlier games

There was never any chance of Kasper Schmeichel conceding on his competitive debut yesterday, as Kilmarnock struggled to impose themselves against the champions.  The contrast with the anaemic start to last season could hardly be greater and was summed up by the Man of the Match contribution from Reo Hatate.

Reo was left out of our early games last season, then injured on his return, the combined effect of which was to rob Celtic of any cohesion.  Yesterday he played with confidence, holding the ball even with an opponent in physical contact.

Kyogo did not get his name on the scoresheet but did everything else.  His most telling contribution was a ranging first-time pass to Nicolas Kuhn, who drifted past the Kilmarnock defence before his deflected shot found the net.  Outwith his goal, the German showed why he received so many plaudits on the preseason US tour.

Celtic will continue to improve in the weeks to come but that is a substantial base to build on.

    Brilliant.Funny.

This is definitely not a dig at the manager but…..

Matt is ansi due a fair bit of praise for his improvement. Brendan has not made James Forrest a player; he was always that. But, Brendan has allowed him a platform to show what he can’t do and does not expect him to be Roy Keane as well

  3. SFTBS @ 5:28 PM,

    Agreed

And if you listened to Brendan Rodgers talk about Matt, he’d be the first to admit it….

Yet you only need to look at how others like James Maddison improved under BR to know that he is still a great development coach.

    Hail Hail

  4. Showtime with the unfurling of the flag cermony followed by another four goal performance on the park making it sixteen in our last four games including pre-season. Brendan arrived at the begining of last season it has to be said under a cloud after his surprise appointment following the unexpected departure of Ange.

The form of the team was iffy as Brendan had to cope with quiite a large cohort of doubtful support and many new players. Brendan went on to win a remarkable double in the circumstances and has certainly restored the confidence of the support going forward.

The team is looking good after a successful pre-season and with the prospect of some new players and a particular striker we are chasing during this window, it’s onwards and upwards. But we must hold onto our best players for another season at least with aspirations of success in Europe

No financial need to sell, 3 years left on contract, would get the same money if not more next summer IMO, it’s up to Matt if he wants to move now

  8. very good explanation of how the brighton method works

    ===========

“We don’t go into details of how we operate but broadly speaking, everything starts with a positional need,” Barber says. “We’re not the sort of club that’s constantly scouring for talent we don’t need. We’re very much [focused on] positional need, data to determine the best candidates to fill that positional need, eyes-on scouting to verify the data, personality profiling to verify the person and then the first choice and the last choice will always be with the coach. We’re not going to bring players into the club the coach doesn’t need or want.”

  10. In response to the comments first raised by scaniel, incidentally thank you for the nice comments, pertaining to Steve Clarke Joe McLaughlin etc and the board, first of all these are 2 different situations, big Joe Morton left in 1983 and would be joined there by Pat Nevin from the Bully Wee later on that year while Steve was 4 years later, as for wee Pat, I had never heard him being linked with us even though he had been with the boys club

Now I don’t know Jack McGinn, but I do know of him, and he was head hunted by Big Jock in an effort to combat the lazy journalism employed by the smsm, so successful was he with the View that he was appointed Commercial Manager in 1981, 16 years after the View was founded, and given a seat on the Board.

As for his Celtic pedigree, well he was originally fae Glasgow but married a local Dumbarton lassie and settled there, his late wife was related to the first player ever to kick a ball for us, Jake Madden, and Jack had a very successful paper shop in the Peoples Republic of Brucehill.

Following the death of Desmond White in July 1985 he was appointed Vice Chairman and with the death of Tom Devlin in September 1986 he became the Chairman, but his reign was never an easy one, due mainly to the throwing money about like a man with no erms policy of the beast who had joined deidco earlier that summer.

Now it should be noted here that we were in a good position to retain our title in season 1986/87 and it seems we were allegedly in for Steve Clarke, but NOT big Joe or wee Pat as its doubtful they would have left Stamford Bridge as both had settled intae english fitba and would stay there for another 5 years or so.

As far as Steve being a Tim, I never heard that until he come back up the road tae manage Kilmarnock and it was mooted that he had been a boyhood fan while the rest of his family were Celtic ones, as for that statement about Jack telling Davie Hay that he would have to pay for any new signings out of his own pocket was allegedly a flippant response suggesting that the board would NEVER sanction any more purchases.

As for Desmond White who Davie Hay always said he had only the best interests of Celtic at heart well I can say this without any fear of contradiction, when he was being laid to rest, our greatest ever captain NEVER attended his funeral.

quiet in the toon today unlike last night after the game when it was bouncing!

  13. Seems to me there is a bit of talk about us signing Shankland from Hearts. Don’t reckon that is good business, and feel we could do much better. Sure the guy has a good goal tally, kinda reminds me of the clown who said Alan Shearer wasnt much good because all he could do was, score goals !!!!.

If we cant get Idah, the Myoski is the man for me without doubt as I think he is so much more mobile.

Do not let Hatate or O’Reilly go at any price

In his book ‘The Accidental Footballer’, Pat Nevin describes how he was contacted by a Celtic official and asked if he would be interested in joining Celtic and he said he’d be very interested. He was told someone would be in touch to set up a meeting.

    He never heard another word.

This was towards the end of his time at Everton.

  17. BURNLEY78 @ 4:49 PM,

“Chris Davies will be a top manager.

Birmingham is wrong choice but he won’t fail.

The way he dealt with Gerard when up here was quality. It shows the steel of the guy to back up his ability.

Delighted Sadler is stepping up and has done a great job under the radar since January. So under the radar no one even mentions the guy. The results speak for themselves since he arrived. Apart from being totally cheated at Tynecastle.

Anyone not recognizing the value in BR having a good assistant manager is not paying attention.

It will be very interesting to see how Chris Davies does – he certainly is bringing in a lot of players to Birmingham and seems to be having them play good stuff.

Of course Adam Sadler is not our Assistant Manager

That honour falls to John Kennedy who has been our Assistant Manager for the last five years.

Adam Sadler replaced Harry Kewell who Ange brought in

He went off to Manage Yokohama F. Marinos with high hoped but lasted less than seven months…

It’s so difficult to predict who the good managers will be…

    Hail Hail
