Subverting the law to win trophies in Scottish football. Again.

It is not a good look when your retail partner is fined after admitting colluding to fix the price of football merchandise.  JD Retail, Celtic’s partner, were fined £1.485m when they colluded with kit manufacturer Elite Sports and Newco Rangers to fix the price of merchandise sold to Newco fans.  I have received assurances that nothing like this has ever happened at Celtic.

The Competition and Markets Authority, who discounted the fines levied on all three organisations as each pled guilty, found that Newco “became concerned” that fans were able to buy “Rangers” kit cheaper there than at the Elite Sports operated Gers Online and physical shops in Glasgow and Belfast.  It does not appear any other clubs’ kit was involved in similar collusion.

JD said, “No directors or senior management of JD were involved in the offending conduct”, otherwise I am sure heads would roll.  Elite and Newco have yet to make similar statements.  It is hard to imagine any other UK club breaking the law in this manner, but this matter reiterates the need for ethical standards in business at the very top of an organisation.
Football clubs have a right to run retail operations that generate positive income inflows, which helps put a competitive team on the field.

When that drive for a competitive edge leads to law breaking, everyone in the game has something to worry about.  You cannot subvert the law of the land to win trophies in Scottish football, how many times, over how many years, do we need to say this?

Also interesting the comments below, obviously this is not a channel the hard of thinking watch, as they were all delighted to get facts and also an examination of their finances, not something that most of Ra Peepul are really interested in nor will find in the SMSM.

    I see Souness and McCoist have issued a statement saying that clubs who engage in price fixing in order to rip off fans are the unacceptable face of Scottish football.

    Not that most here will need any convincing but if you needed any further evidence on the reporting standards of BBC Scotland then a look at their headline reporting the shirt fixing should put the discussion to bed. Whilst others correctly led with headlines that all three parties were complicit BBC Scotland went with…”Two Rangers replica kit retailers fined nearly £2M”.

    STStives as a matter of interest what are Celtic doing regarding redevelopment of Barrowfield,as for Shawfield Greyhound track being toxic then it must be been like that when the Bully Wee ie Clyde Football Club played on their pitch all those years ago .

    The SPFL has finalised a new £150m live broadcast deal with Sky Sports.

     

     

    Scottish Premiership clubs had approved a proposed new contract for 2025-29, which will increase the amount of games shown from 48 to 60.

     

     

    Sky will also show Scottish women’s domestic games from this season.

     

     

    The current arrangement with Sky runs until the end of season 2024-25 and SPFL CEO Neil Doncaster says the new contract is “a very significant financial and promotional deal”.

    The English Premier League’s revenues are expected to exceed £6 billion this season for the first time, rapidly outpacing its European rivals.

     

     

    Premier League clubs earned £4.9 billion in the 2020/21 season, according to Deloitte’s latest annual review of football finance, despite an almost complete loss of matchday revenue due to Covid-19. This was an 8% rise on a year earlier, while Germany’s Bundesliga and Spain’s La Liga both suffered a 6% drop in revenues.

     

    Deloitte expects the English top flight to have made £5.5 billion in 2021/22 and to top £6 billion in the current season, which kicked off at the start of August. The English game continues to ride a wave of popularity around the world and has benefited from a significant uplift in its international broadcast rights.

    I believe Ireland is having its trouble in the same way as the English people are having to endure, which is unacceptable.

    But then again, we live in a country were the majority of the populace are educated by BBC, ITV, CH4(Guardian TV), SKY NEWS, etc, so who knows were this’ll end up!

     

    We also live in a world were football supporters are not the respected or feared groups that they once were, apart from the huns, since all seating became a thing and tamed thousands to being like sheep.

    TV revenue is vital nowadays and televised games are the norm.

     

    For a club of our size and stature the TV deal is poor, but collectively probably the best we can get unless we embrace summer football.

     

     

    My focus and hopefully Celtic’sis to enhance the match day experience at Parkhead. Be imaginative, use our space and that of the Emirates to create a real football hub. The games lasts 90+ minutes, but let the match day experience last hours and hours.

     

     

    Just about every one of our games now is a complete sell out, engage forcibly with GCC and remind them of our value to the city in general. We are now the strength in negotiations. Put simply given the new European data on attendance; they need us.

     

     

    I was down in Balloch on Saturday afternoon. The Argyle roadrunners scooter club left from McChuills for their annual rally in Balloch. Great atmosphere and full spotless well run pop up bars.

     

     

    We must look at all options. So much potential is not being realised.

     

     

    Of course all this is better and more enjoyable in the summer.

     

     

    Sadly we will never compete with the riches of the EPL, but with summer football we don’t have to.. Think Norway.
