Succession at Celtic

1034

I have no doubt this morning’s press reports on Celtic’s plans for the months ahead are correct.  We are told the club “is planning an overhaul of their football operations in the summer that would see significant changes to their set-up.”  There is a great deal you can surmise from that statement.

“Overhaul… of football operations”, “significant changes”, leaves zero doubt Neil Lennon will be moving on and suggests wider changes are likely.  It is also safe to assume Neil is on-board with this and has agreed to remain in charge until the end of the season, or a suitable replacement arrives.

Neil would not go through this torture were it not out of a sense of responsibility towards the players, several of whom he personally convinced to stay for this ‘important season’.  Malicious talk of holding out for a payoff is well wide of the mark.

What is also clear is that Celtic are not happy to appoint any manager who is prepared to come to the club right now.  This precludes those out of work, or those who are not prepared to ‘Do a Brendan’ and leave their current project with trophies still to be won and lost.

The new industry is not always as helpful.  Last night reports that betting was suspended on Eddie Howe getting the job received plenty of clicks.  Eddie has his eyes on a different target and will almost certainly pick up an English Premiership job this year.  He is as likely to come to Celtic as another fantasy appointment, Mauricio Pochettino, was, before choosing Paris when he could have made his home in Glasgow.  If only it was that easy.

If we take the ‘Get real’ suggestions off the table, I know the photo fit you are working with.  Someone who has over-performed in a different environment, who is technically razor sharp and can bring knowledge of a value market.

They will have a successful track record, one that is short enough that they have not already moved up the food chain, but one longer than Ronny Deila’s mercurial rise at Stromsgodset.  We now know that the skills required to achieve one season of spectacular success is Norway does not automatically equip a manager for what on paper looks an easier task.  The Goldilocks candidate, enough of a spectacular record, but not too much that they have already got their move.

The quick fix if Neil leaves is John Kennedy as interim or someone, like Ronny, who cannot believe he’s been offered the Celtic job.  Or let Neil complete the season and attempt to add the Scottish Cup and leave his second term trophy report reading 6 out of 8.  I am not recommending either option, it’s too complicated to sit on the outside and suggest a fix with any conviction – not matter how convinced this is an easy one, it’s not.

If Neil remains until the end of the season it will not be because he needs the money, or because he deserves the respect of a Celtic hero (although he does), it is because the business of succession has to be settled.  My preference would be to spend these months doing reconnaissance; better to do it right than to do it early, but the galleries have loved a blood letting since the Colosseum, we know how it works.

  1. Southampton v Arsenal on just now.

Arsenal player arm in the face of Soton player. Free kick, reviewed by VAR. No yellow.

Very comparable to Brown although ball within playing distance being different.

    Just saying.

do you not enjoy the memories triggered and the legends remember when looking at the history of “our” club ?

there must be something you would never tire of looking at ?

  3. A very good morning all,

I think the frustration stems from the opportunity to be light years ahead.

    But facts is facts.

The failure to qualify for the CL in this run of league titles has been our down fall.

    Ask yourself one question.

When we had £40 million in the bank, were did it come from.

Player exposure to the CL and the high value sell on this creates + the £30 million it brought in each season.

Paul Lambert makes a great point about holding on to players who don’t want to be here.

Sell them early and ensure you have your targets lined up and brought in early. This gives them time to settle in

Every transfer window, we wait till the last minute and this has been a large part of the problem. Or we hope to get targets FOC in the summer because we dont want to pay in winter.

If you were playing and there was a possibility of X4 the money you are being paid at present going up in smoke if you got injured. How would you approach the game?

Remember big boyata and half stadium closure during the RD era.

The board have been repeating the same error year after year and wondering why we keep failing.

The buck stops at PL he is the highest earner at the club.

Dont defend the indefensible or you cant be trusted.

    Just accept the facts.

What do you think of the content of the video near the top of this article:

    Does it have valididty?

    ——-

    Hi Jim

I don’t know what TBB does for a living, but I’m intrigued, and very impressed with his depth of knowledge. He seems more clinically/ scientifically expert that I’ll ever be, so I’ll await his response with interest.

I’ll focus on the Covid question, rather than the geopolitical allegations ref The Great Reset.

Testing seems not to have been consistent and accurate. It’s tricky and unpleasant to administer, which impacts self administered tests in particular. And the jury is out on its wider accuracy. Science is seldom an exact science!

I draw my conclusions from listening to the medics we work with across the uk. Their ITU areas are stretched, some close to breaking point. For them, this is no hoax, nor is there over-reporting.

I think as the public, we’ve become tired of the restrictions. Numbed to the numbers – 3or4 plane crashes a day last week. And the ITUs are closed off to all but an occasional tv crew.

I went out of the house yesterday. First time since last Sunday. Took a call on a bench by the Thames. The footpath itself is only just over 2m wide. A constant stream of people went past. Many obviously not from the same family, side by side, and/or passing close to others. Barely a mask in sight.

I know open air significantly ‘dilutes’ aerosols and risk. But they’re acting like there is no risk.

    Stay safe and groovy.

    Too many to mention.

But at this moment in time I am only interested in the here and now and how quickly we deteriorated to become a shambles of a club

  8. Happy Birthday Hamiltontim.🍻🍻🍻

Guys of course we will all be supporting Celtic next year, it might be that some of us dont renew ST in protest but we will still be supporting our club, not the board etc.

Will the board still be supporting Celtic or do they actually support Celtic.

They cannot believe with a hand on heart that what they are doing is for the best interest of our club because it is clearly not and damaging our club. So what other reason for their behaviour.

Lying to Celtic supporters should never ever be tolerated.

Although this season on and off the field has been disappointing to say the least I’m definitely an all our yesterday’s guy – otherwise what’s the point of winning anything if you’re going to discount the achievement.

Always looking at the next challenge means disappointment is just around the corner . The statues outside our stadium and naming of stands etc is a tangible representation of our history and I for one celebrate it.

  11. Lots of us said before the season started, that only Celtic could stop us winning the 10 iar. Well , we were right, don’t get me wrong, the other lot have done well but we have capitulated embarrassingly.

The questions are, how did we get it so spectacularly wrong ? and more to the point, why is it being allowed to continue ?

The more cynical amongst us would suggest, it is by design that we have allowed our biggest rivals to succeed at a time when their lack of finance should have put them out of business again. I’m reminded of the statements our CEO made years ago , that without a strong sevco we face a £10 million black hole. Maybe we’ve been unlucky and simply played poorly just when our “rivals” were close to going under, again, aye, maybe.

    Hail Hail

Anybody who reckons we deliberately threw the League would need their heads examined.

The Board despite plenty of rumours did not sell anyone.

WE lost Forster but that was no ones fault, he wasn’t our player, we tried to get him back on loan but he wouldn’t come.

The Board sanctioned funds to buy Barkas, Ajeti & Turnbull & renewed Elyounoussi’s loan plus brought in Duffy & Laxalt on loan. Hardly the work of a Board trying to throw the League.

Lenny despite the criticism he is getting is Celtic to the core, he certainly wouldn’t be complicit in trying to throw a League.

The reality is these things happen in football, things can just go wrong and in this season everything possible has just gone wrong, it has been the season from Hell but we Supporters who have had a wonderful time for last 9 years have a call to make.

Do we stamp our feet & scream & scream & scream or do we discuss coherently about what went wrong & what needs to be done to ensure this Season is just a blip & not a long term game changer.

  15. so we don’t have a return clause with the now matured Jack Hendry , I take it Brighton have the same with Duff y .

  16. Corkcelt

Agree whole heartedly with your last paragraph.

We’ve not seen enough of this. Positions are polarised and becoming entrenched

  17. Corkcelt

I agree that Neil would not be complicit in any throwing of the league – the unfortunate reality is he isn’t up to the job and the signs have been there since our CL exit and probably Cluj before that.

  18. anniveriries all round.
