Succession at Celtic

1034

I have no doubt this morning’s press reports on Celtic’s plans for the months ahead are correct.  We are told the club “is planning an overhaul of their football operations in the summer that would see significant changes to their set-up.”  There is a great deal you can surmise from that statement.

“Overhaul… of football operations”, “significant changes”, leaves zero doubt Neil Lennon will be moving on and suggests wider changes are likely.  It is also safe to assume Neil is on-board with this and has agreed to remain in charge until the end of the season, or a suitable replacement arrives.

Neil would not go through this torture were it not out of a sense of responsibility towards the players, several of whom he personally convinced to stay for this ‘important season’.  Malicious talk of holding out for a payoff is well wide of the mark.

What is also clear is that Celtic are not happy to appoint any manager who is prepared to come to the club right now.  This precludes those out of work, or those who are not prepared to ‘Do a Brendan’ and leave their current project with trophies still to be won and lost.

The new industry is not always as helpful.  Last night reports that betting was suspended on Eddie Howe getting the job received plenty of clicks.  Eddie has his eyes on a different target and will almost certainly pick up an English Premiership job this year.  He is as likely to come to Celtic as another fantasy appointment, Mauricio Pochettino, was, before choosing Paris when he could have made his home in Glasgow.  If only it was that easy.

If we take the ‘Get real’ suggestions off the table, I know the photo fit you are working with.  Someone who has over-performed in a different environment, who is technically razor sharp and can bring knowledge of a value market.

They will have a successful track record, one that is short enough that they have not already moved up the food chain, but one longer than Ronny Deila’s mercurial rise at Stromsgodset.  We now know that the skills required to achieve one season of spectacular success is Norway does not automatically equip a manager for what on paper looks an easier task.  The Goldilocks candidate, enough of a spectacular record, but not too much that they have already got their move.

The quick fix if Neil leaves is John Kennedy as interim or someone, like Ronny, who cannot believe he’s been offered the Celtic job.  Or let Neil complete the season and attempt to add the Scottish Cup and leave his second term trophy report reading 6 out of 8.  I am not recommending either option, it’s too complicated to sit on the outside and suggest a fix with any conviction – not matter how convinced this is an easy one, it’s not.

If Neil remains until the end of the season it will not be because he needs the money, or because he deserves the respect of a Celtic hero (although he does), it is because the business of succession has to be settled.  My preference would be to spend these months doing reconnaissance; better to do it right than to do it early, but the galleries have loved a blood letting since the Colosseum, we know how it works.

  1. I have said for about ten years . The biggest to the Celtic football has been and still

    Is Peter lawwel

Excessive executive pay for a company this size is a fact

Cost cutting and underperforming in Europe does not lead to CEO being paid nearly 3-5% of turnover

But then again it makes sense that our strategy is to maximise one persons pay

DD is not a big Celtic fan and has made it clear that zero debt is his major focus

Which then leaves us with a CEO who has nearly 3 times the salary of our manger

Things will not change as long as 52,000 season tickets renew and merchandise continues to be bought

Peter only cares about his own bank balance

I went home and and away for 14 years before I and many others boycotted in 93

It’s the only way to force out this leech of a man

  2. Let’s try and think positive

N&V is still not out the question.

Hun tears by the barrel, come on sturgeon get your finger out. You wouldn’t wipe the smile off my face with a shovel

  3. My friends in Celtic,

Change is inevitable and it will come. Maybe not quickly enough for the majority of us, but it will come and it will be decisive.

I don’t think for a minute our board, Peter Lawwell et al haven’t contemplated the dramatic loss of revenue from the double whammy of continued Covid restrictions and the very real prospect of losing circa 50% of our ST holders.

Expect heavily discounted Season Ticket prices and a new share issue.

The Season Tickets will be dramatically discounted ensuring that instead of 25,000 sold it will be about 45,000. Lots of fans who have been waiting years for a ticket will fill the void of they existing non renewals .

To alleviate the downfall in revenue, the board will launch a new ambitious share issue with the catchy slogan of :- A new beginning beckons, be part of this new beginning as we move forward together into a new era.

    Watch this space.

    HH to all.

  4. Go tell.

College boy , as homer said to doctor Hibbert when Marjorie was given birth to Bart.

And the question is how much does PL make per minute £17

Hello – appreciate it isn’t documentary proof, but surely the positive comments from DD about The Rangers and the reported comments from PL about the damage to our finances through Rangers not being in the league (i.e., being liquidated for cheating and corruption) are an indication about the desire of the Celtic hierarchy to have a strong / functional Rangers ‘back’ in Scottish football?

I remember laughing at DD’s comments on the golf course interview – I thought that it was a brilliant, tongue-in-cheek windup.

I remember thinking PL’s comments were just a pragmatic recognition that there was a potential financial impact due to no ‘Old Firm’ (albeit the BR showed that any such impact was easily overcome with a progressive appointment).

Now – I think I was giving DD and PL too much of the benefit of the doubt. I should really have taken their comments at face value.

    DD did want them back.

PL was keen to have the guaranteed £10M cash flow.

Whether there is underhanded dealing to ensure they got their wishes I don’t know.

Lack of action on Resolution 12 despite being furnished with hard evidence / lack of comment on the LNS enquiry – now shown in court to have been based on a false premise and tailored to produce a required result / the lack of calling out of the ‘continuation’ lie.

All of these make you wonder what is behind the pattern of comments / lack of comments; actions / lack of actions.

Might just be a series of things some wish had been handled differently by the Board – however, they all seem to be at complete odds with what (only my opinion) I think most Celtic supporters would expect (hope?) from the Celtic leadership.

    Good post

Only issue is the assertion by Celtic that there are thousands on a waiting list.

    Which I doubt.

I agree there is a possibility they will cut prices “as reward to those who renewed this season”

  8. Jimmynotpaul/Philbhoy.

I’m watching piano man right now.

You got us feeling alright 💚

    Stay safe please 🍀💚

  9. And finally for this evening …. I’d wager most well heeled managers and players will be more concerned about their families and parents at this time rather than upping sticks to self isolate in Glasgow …

Which bit of the above is too difficult to understand…

  10. Maybe the board have just been unlucky these last 10 years in Europe.

Think of that, we didn’t need the hun £ if we qualified for the CL

    We all know it.

Res 12 was never about the hun it was always about the cheating SFA, if anyone was paying attention to canamalar’s comments for years before he was always talking about H&S for our players compounded by cheating refs.

And at that time everyone of us were Neil Lennon.

If you know your history .

History repeats itself, first as tragedy, second as farce.

We are not makers of history. We are made by history.

Take your pick Karl Marx & Martin Luther King

  11. Green pinta. Interesting view

    One problem

Two years ago we had 35M in bank and then sold KT

After poor management and loss of income we only had 7M cash left in bank at accounts

If we still had that big cash lump in bank then Peter could of got away with it

We don’t and that plan would plunge us into debt

As for share issue. Last issue 20 years ago I think was massively undertaken

Only the fact that DD underwrote it made it a success

Who now will invest in shares in our club when we have a CEO who will take a big chunk of it in his back pocket

  12. Go,

  13. H Guys. Not up to speed here. after last years calling early, Has SPL got a set rules on when or why a league can be called? is there a percentage of games need to be played?

  14. It’s 75% of games played.

But personally I’d be happy if it stopped now and huns awarded league.

  15. For what’s its worth.

I actually think SB is running the show and this may be one of the reasons for our failure. The sending off was an absolute kick in the teeth for LN.

If you remember NL’s first day, when SB said to LN what’s with the black suit are you going to a funeral. Complete lack of respect.

If I was the manager I would have told him to get his boots and GTF there and then.

Do you think MON or big jock would have stood for that and it was on camera.

I like SB, but even at the time I thought he was disrespectful and have you seen the way he talks to the French connection.

    Not good

  16. i find it remarkable, a club like sevco, has so far, escaped any imposition from Covid. its touched everyone. The bolingoli, and Dubai things are i suppose, ours to own.

What if, just say,Covid rips through the sevco team.

And then league is called early. what then

  17. The hand of God on

When “rangers” win the title and declare it their 55th will our board congratulate them on their achievement or will they point out that its actually their 1st…their decision could have the biggest impact of all on season ticket sales.

  18. Hand why would the board say anything now.

They are completely on board with the plan.

We need a string rangers was DD’s line

  19. We all had big hopes for this Season & accordingly the disappointment is huge.

However we shouldn’t let our disappointment cloud the glorious run we have had, the 9 in a row & the Quadruple Treble.

We are down right now but lashing out & pillorying everyone at the Club is simply wrong.

I have recently seen players like Brown & CalMac getting stick and I feel this is madness, these Bhoys are Legends & will be honoured by future generations of Celtic Fans for what they achieved over past 9 years.

A lot of mistakes have been made this year from Bolingoli to Dubai, We have suffered big time because of Covid while the Huns remained virtually unscathed. We did invest in reinforcements but by & large they flopped. Stallworth’s of previous years ran out of legs.

I think pinning everything on either Lenny, Pedro or particular players is infantile.

Sure these individuals could have done better but I am quite sure none of them intentionally scuppered us,

The Club now needs to take stock, changes will have to be made, a lot of players will need to be moved out & new players brought in. I think it’s absolutely essential that a Director of Football be appointed & that any CEO whether Pedro or his replacement should have no remit to interfere.

Should these changes be made now or at Season’s end is a matter of opinion.

  20. Last night I spent 10 minutes on Google identifying a guy (Clemente) who ticks all the boxes Paul67 described. Peter, of your reading I did your job for you so £170 can ping it’s way to me as a finder’s fee 😂

  21. I mentioned Lucien Favre the other week as a very decent replacement to what we have presently, he would be cheap enough, but I very much doubt he would work with our pretendy DoF, when the great Desmondo realises this we may well get back to being a decent football club, as it is it’s business first and foremost and the football is way way down the list of priorities, but I will wager now that the suits are gonna get a serious wake up call come SB renewal time, they are gonna need that waiting list and some me thinks.

  22. The hand of God on

Noo…yes “rangers” seem to be just about the only team in European football unaffected by covid whilst just about every opponent they play seems to be ravaged by it…very strange

    Absolutely bang out of order

I don’t agree with p67 but no need for personal abuse.

  24. Cork,

We need the change asap to give us any chance of CL qualification next year.

    It’s not rocket science,

Love lenny, but his time is up and his staff.

Oh by the way there are no skint ex manager’s our ex-football players out there.

I bet TT would jump at the chance if offered, but we wont because we are cheap, but not very cheerful.

It will be jack ross, bet your bottom $ on it and that’s why they are waiting.

  25. Lawwell will be hoping Hibs win the League Cup, so he can tell us, ‘ our No 1 choice for manager, is a winner…’

  26. Hand of God. strange that. especially after the Airfield party where Arfield wasn’t there or any other first team squad

  27. Pitymevin.

Not sure about that. We have already thrown away a lot of money, we are no longer a rich Club, if we get this wrong we could be the poor relations for years.
