Suker, Uefa and regionalisation

935

Croatian hero of the 1990s, Davor Suker, currently Croatian Football Federation president, is campaigning for a place on the Uefa Executive Committee, one of 12 people chasing 7 places.

Sukor has been campaigning across south-eastern Europe, with a simple message: collapse the cream from the national leagues of 13 countries into one powerful 42-team regional league structure.  He has support across the region, including Turkey and the former Yugoslav countries.

Smaller countries across Europe have realised that they must regionalise or accept a future of irrelevance.  The Gazprom-funded deal between the Ukrainian and Russian regional league floundered at the onset or war but regionalisation is not going away.  We need innovative campaigners like Suker to rise to positions of authority, replace the ranks of the incompetent and talentless.

Well done to newco for rewarding those who used their media outlets to campaign relentlessly on their behalf in recent years with a seat in the directors’ box on Tuesday.  I’m sure David Leggat deserved the accolade of being the only mainstream media journo so honoured, which is quite something.  New season lamb is in stock early this year.

What AT has done, and I don’t think it’s the first time, is blog on Rangers whilst in the midst of something else and not put the proper time into it.

If he had he’d have seen that the tweet in question was not an isolated one and that would have altered the entire slant of the blog.

I like AT. When he concentrates on a subject properly I think he’s as fine a journalist as any but if he can’t keep abreast of Scottish football and Sevco he should just step back from it.

To his credit he tried to highlight how corrupt the system was up here, but I believe the lack of interest overall disheartened him. I suspect he thought there was an appetite for more coverage and it just didn’t come to pass.

  14. Tontine Tim,

Well said. There are way too many on here don’t seem to want to hear that.

I wouldn’t want to be that chancer Graham but, sad to say, he has brought it on himself with his history of anti-Catholic/Irish/ Celtic diatribes. Scotland’s Establishment, in turning a blind eye to such common-place behaviour, has created the atmosphere where he has felt safe to propound such evil.

  15. Scottish Muslim leaders have called for Rangers to investigate a tweet sent by its newly-appointed director Chris Graham.

The image appeared on the board member’s Twitter page on the same day as the Charlie Hebdo attack in Paris.

A sketch of the prophet Mohammed engaged in a sex act with Star Wars character Jar Jar Binks was tweeted from Graham’s account on January 7 to Islamist preacher Anjem Choudary, two months before his appointment to the Rangers board.

Choudary tweeted the message: “Freedom of expression does not extend to insulting the prophets of Allah, whatever your views on the events in Paris today!”

In response, a tweet sent from Graham’s account included the sketch along with the message: “You probably won’t like this one of Prophet Mo.”

President of Glasgow Central Mosque, Dr Asid Khan, called for Rangers to carry out an internal investigation and branded the tweet “reprehensible”.

He said: “With freedom of speech comes great responsibility to not offend other people. In this case, such a tweet is very offensive to a large proportion of the population, not only Muslims.

“This was very irresponsible and reprehensible coming from a director of a football club. I would hope and expect Rangers to carry out an internal investigation into the issue and take what action they deem appropriate.

“A number of Muslims play for Rangers and I imagine they would be disgusted by this.”

****When contacted by STV, a spokesman for Rangers said Graham was not under investigation but that the board would seek to address the matter within the next 48 hours.****

Secretary of the Muslim Council of Scotland, Mazhar Khan, said it hoped Rangers took the matter “very seriously” and probed whether “a line had been crossed” by Graham.

He said: “We reject all types of insulting and offensive behaviour, especially if it is against people’s religious beliefs or identity.

“We would hope that Rangers take the issue very seriously to establish whether a line has been crossed.

“We would hope that they at least look into this. However, we would leave it to the judgement of Rangers and their board over what action to take.”

They think it’s Moldova, it is now! Shame about the ol’ Ukraine-Russia League. Never really got off the ground, unlike the missiles and the artillery shells, which most definitely did. They say sport is like war without the shooting, not in the Ukraine it isn’t. Maybe Davor Sukor will have more luck putting Yugoslavia back together, then again, maybe not.

  23. They sacked a Director before for being a sectarian bigot.

There canny be many clubs who have lost TWO directors for being bigots.

    Wurld record………….AGAIN!!!!!! Whit a club.

  24. So that was a man sent off and a penalty against that should never have happened. Another average performance from Mr Thompson.

  25. A Rangers fan who was arrested for sectarian singing while on his way to attend a game against Celtic has been jailed for four months.

Scott Lamont, from Glasgow, was heard singing the words of the Billy Boys song on Cathcart Road on 1 February.

The 24-year-old admitted the charge at Glasgow Sheriff Court.

He was also given an 18-month football banning order and told his behaviour would not be tolerated.

Sheriff Paul Crozier told Lamont’s lawyer, Joanne Gray: “Glasgow has developed a good reputation in recent years.

“We had the Commonwealth Games last summer, we haven’t had an Old Firm game in years.

“What happened at the first Old Firm game? People like him let Glasgow down.”

    ‘Ruin football’

The sheriff described the words to the song as “inflammatory” an said it “could have led to horrendous violence”.

He told Lamont: “Your conduct on 1 February was the sort of conduct that the authorities had asked football loving fans to refrain from.

“A message has to be sent to those people who would choose to ruin football for the vast majority who want to go to these games, that you cannot behave like this.

“This sort of behaviour will not be tolerated, certainly not by me.”

Another man, Alexander Blood, from Saltford in Somerset, was given a community payback order after admitting acting in a racially aggravated manner.

Blood swore at police officers and called them “Jock”.

As part of the order he will be supervised for 18 months and must carry out 160 hours of unpaid work.

He was also given a three year football banning order.
