Summer of the long Copa

491

Canada face Venezuela overnight in a game which if the South Americans lose, will see the final Celtic player break for the summer.  Even if Canada are eliminated in the small hours of Saturday morning, Alistair Johnston will have a short break before picking up for the new term.  Venezuela topped their group with maximum points, so will start favourites.

Celtic’s first competitive game is four weeks away, while the squad head to the USA in less than a fortnight.  Brendan Rodgers could be tempted to start the season with Anthony Ralston at right back to extend Johnston’s break.

Alistair has played every minute of Canada’s campaign, whereas Cameron Carter-Vickers Copa America experience with the USA was limited to one substitute appearance.  Neither will be properly rested for the new campaign, no matter how much extended leave Brendan allows.

In fairness to Paul – when I read CQN, my mindset is in Scottish time.

Thanks to Weeron for stepping in with the data.

Thanks to BRRB for reminding me opening time was a few hours ago….

Looking forward to the Euro quarters today – both me and my sons (most have never lived in Scotland), only want the strongest team to win, so they can beat Engurland if the Swiss don’t.

As has been said a thousand times on here by people with a progressive view if we plan and invest wisely to seek improvement in Europe the domestic comps should in all likelihood take care of themselves.

By improvement I mean (old format) 3rd rather than 4th, with an occasional 2nd with target of 7-10pts. Fewer pumpings and an improved home record – team that could do that would have no issues domestically. Its not an either/or issue and we have the means to do it – or we could just stay in our comfort zone with the odd scare from Ragers2 and count the money in the bank.

Reggie – great stats but a little depressing when you see all the muck that has put the famous Glasgow Celtic to the sword…..

    interesting answer.

old format – 3rd place would be better than 4th and an improvement.

new format we need to be 24th at least in the league format to get to the knockout phase.

no one in the “progressives” camp will tolerate though a defeat to the rangers or a cup loss to killie or morton or indeed a loss to hearts at home.

all which have a reasonable chance of happening in any given season.

it will happen again, and the “i told you so” will re-appear.

i think PL will step down next, and it owont make a single bit of difference to strategic intent of the company,

    but hey ho,

Reading about Ronnie Delia (a good coach ,who in my opinion was hounded out by Desmond and Co) he has been appointed head coach with a Saudi football team ,he is taken Kenny Miller on as one of his backroom staff ,talk about people being looked after Miller is definitely in that category, and for not being a friend of our club I’m surprised Delia took him on board .

great stats but a little depressing when you see all the muck that has put the famous Glasgow Celtic to the sword

    =======

8 of those 15 seasons we lost in the qualifiers. You might say we can’t expect to beat Arsenal in a playoff and you’d be absolutely right. But that was having lost the league after the ‘Willo Flood’ January transfer window. Twice we qualified automatically. 4 times we did qualify. And the other we weren’t eligible and scraped through to the Europa League on a technicality having once again lost in the qualifiers.

It’s knockout football so anything can happen what’s really depressing is the utter predictability of it. The problem then as now is that we’re not even trying. When you look at some of the lineups, and think back to how unprepared we were, it’s blindingly obvious that when the board say they want to be world class in everything they do their actions do not match their words. World class would be looking at successful clubs from smaller leagues with similar resources and poaching talent from their system. Maybe not the main men but the assistants looking to progress their careers. CEO, Director of Football / Head of Scouting, Manager, Head of Youth Development are key figures and we hand them out to friends and relatives of the Chairman.

Here’s the UEFA club rankings plenty of clubs with similar or smaller budgets ahead of us.

    https://www.uefa.com/nationalassociations/uefarankings/club/?year=2024

As for signings, how many times have you heard ‘We aim to come out of every window stronger than we went in’? I know it’s not possible. But replacing Jota with Yang and Palma on deadline is not even trying. And it happens time and time again. They are either lying or grossly incompetent.

    Paul67 says

“If you are in charge and you know you are going to need to wait until late in the window for top talent, would you go down your list to ‘get the players in early’? How far down would you go?”

    https://www.celticquicknews.co.uk/wheres-the-signings-chat/comment-page-2/#comment-3928900

Say you have a list of 5 strikers and the club of your top target is playing hardball and you think you can get a few million off the price tag on deadline day. Then the club refuse to sell and the deal falls through. How many of your top 5 are still available? Are we down at 5? Have we missed out on 2, 3 and 4 gambling that they’d accept our lowball offer. We cannot count on crucial signings on deadline day. By all means negotiate, but at some point draw a line in the sand, make your best offer and if it’s rejected move on to Number 2.

Anyway, I’ve pretty much said all I want to say. Let’s see who’s on that plane to the US. Hopefully City and Chelsea play their reserves as a few spankings in these lucrative friendlies will ensure we don’t get invited back
