Summer of the long Copa

491

Canada face Venezuela overnight in a game which if the South Americans lose, will see the final Celtic player break for the summer.  Even if Canada are eliminated in the small hours of Saturday morning, Alistair Johnston will have a short break before picking up for the new term.  Venezuela topped their group with maximum points, so will start favourites.

Celtic’s first competitive game is four weeks away, while the squad head to the USA in less than a fortnight.  Brendan Rodgers could be tempted to start the season with Anthony Ralston at right back to extend Johnston’s break.

Alistair has played every minute of Canada’s campaign, whereas Cameron Carter-Vickers Copa America experience with the USA was limited to one substitute appearance.  Neither will be properly rested for the new campaign, no matter how much extended leave Brendan allows.

Well, if you think Cheatin’ Beaton was bad at re-refereeing games when he’s the VAR, the TMO in rugby is far worse. A potentially game changing Ireland try chalked off for a very, very subjective and marginal call.

Shearer, Jeeeez , my ears are bleedin’. Some going , to be as annoying as McCoist .

  3. England have been scraping through these last few games. I can’t see them winning the whole thing but you never know.

England through courtesy of one really shite penalty by Akanji

    ____

Woeful penalty. I thought some his passing was poor, plus too casual at times. Same for penalty. Didn’t know he played for man city. Shearer is wee Sally with an English accent.

  5. Turkey have been the better team here imo.

8 of the 11 starters play on n the Turkish top tier. Scotland were probably the worst team in the competition and had a starting 11 that had Calmac and Magregir from the SPL. We start with one have tied behind our backs

  6. God, what was that. Calmac and Ralston

And Turkey look to be going out.

  7. Semi-finalists Netherlands finish with two players signed under the “failed” Celtic transfer policy

Household name Virgil van Dijk and Jeremie Frimpong

  8. Fair play Turkey, just about every game they’ve been involved in has been a cracker.

  9. We aim to emulate teams from outside of the top 5 leagues. The knockouts included the Netherlands, Switzerland, Denmark, Austria, Turkey, and Portugal

Meanwhile Scotland had the worst record of any team in the tournament.

How do we compete with teams who don’t have to buy in the sort of talent that plays knockout football in major international tournaments?

  10. Turkey had a wonderful tournament.Big improvement in the league last season, seems to be continuing.Lets hope the scum get Fenerbache in the draw.Dutch can be very good or very poor.Loads of talented players who could easily win this.

Only problem I can see,is,they are Dutch.

  11. I think Bernardo is exactly the sort of player we should be looking at signing for the longer term.

But I’d like to know how we expect to improve in Europe by signing players that teams above us in the rankings don’t want.

  14. Good morning – chucking it down in North Staffs.

England second best again last night – but great penalties. I was hoping Turkey would win as they would have a better chance against them.
