Summer of the long Copa

491

Canada face Venezuela overnight in a game which if the South Americans lose, will see the final Celtic player break for the summer.  Even if Canada are eliminated in the small hours of Saturday morning, Alistair Johnston will have a short break before picking up for the new term.  Venezuela topped their group with maximum points, so will start favourites.

Celtic’s first competitive game is four weeks away, while the squad head to the USA in less than a fortnight.  Brendan Rodgers could be tempted to start the season with Anthony Ralston at right back to extend Johnston’s break.

Alistair has played every minute of Canada’s campaign, whereas Cameron Carter-Vickers Copa America experience with the USA was limited to one substitute appearance.  Neither will be properly rested for the new campaign, no matter how much extended leave Brendan allows.

I agree Ronny was a good coach with good ideas.

However I think it would not be unfair to suggest that the behaviour and attitudes of a number of our former players in his team were more of a contributing factor to Ronny losing his job.

Easily identified by looking at players who didn’t feature after Brendan came in.

a few of the worser games in this tourny have been when its between 2 of the bigster teams and some of the bester games have been when at least 1 of the worster teams have been involved.

this has 0-0 wroted all over it.

    so far im right!

Those who think the NHS in Scotland is well run and delivering for people need to wake up or they have no experience of this themselves,”

My experience is very recent .

I had a bike accident nearly three weeks ago resulting in a broken hip

I needed a new one and six days later I was back home after having received fantastic treatment . I have nothing but praise for everyone involved in my case and cannot fault a single aspect of the NHS.

You may well have a valid point about more funding for the NHS but quite simply, you were wrong to say that ` “Those who think the NHS in Scotland is well run and delivering for people need to wake up or they have no experience of this themselves,” `

Many posters, with the understandable motivaton of wanting our team to be constantly improved, seem to forget that many of the players of the standard we would need, don`t really find the SPFL all that appealing.

I found that doing or saying something both of didn’t like or found embarrassing would usually do the trick.

  11. Reggie,

    that was interesting ish..

Was it auldheid who gave access to the report that was comparing leagues and within it the scottish league was a “tier 3” league, with 7 other leagues generating more than the scots /

as to co-efficients, Celtic are 59.

A quick scan and the first team on the list that is in a tier 3 league is somebody using the alias “Rangers” at position 24.

should we use this clubs perenial startegy, be second, qualify for the lesser european competitions and go far in them ?

others on the list before celtic such as quarabag , they get co-efficient points in lesser competitions.

i read all the seasons we lost to 2lesser” teams, interestingly for me, we dominated domestically in most of them.

Seville is held as a high point by many.

We lost that game, lost that league, never won a cup, it was a shite ending to a great season, but ultimately nobody beyond celtic cares a jot.

I dont subscribe to the get better in europe and we would dominate domestically anyway, very few teams ever do.

Europe comes at a cost, and losing at home would be the trade off.

Other than 67, that is the way it has been.

So to go deep in europe, dont be suprised to lose a grip on domestic success.

What do you think we will win this next season ?

i want the league minimum, if we wint some home fixtures in europe, i think that is as good as we will get.

    Hey ho.

  13. i will repeat my line again, a domestic league game loss to rangers, and a cup round defeat to anyone and the car park will be full of protesters again, regardless if we are doing better in europe.

If Taylor was doing an EPL game,Kroos would be off after 15 minutes, sympathy vote as he’s retiring

  17. I’m not aware of any report about tier 3 leagues, but you’d have to analyse individual clubs within those tiers, as a huge club in a tier 3 league could have much more resources than a small club in a tier 2 league. So I’m not really sure where you’re going with that.

We’ve played in the lesser competitions plenty of times in the last 15 years, mainly due to our inability to get through CL Qualifiers

    21/22 Europa League finished 3rd.

Europa Conference knockouts. Lost home and away to Bodo Glimt

20/21 Europa League Group stages. Finish bottom on 4 points winning a dead rubber against Lille in the last game

19/20 Europa League – topped group including Lazio and bizarrely Cluj again. Lost in the last 32 to Copenhagen

18/19 Europa League finished 2nd in the group. Lost in the last 32 to Valencia

17/18 Europa League lost in the last 32 to Zenit

15/16 Europa League. Finish bottom on 3 points

14/15 Europa League. Finished 2nd in group. Lose in the last 32 to Inter

11/12. Europa League. Lose to Sion in the playoff. Reinstated after Sion field ineligible players. Finish 3rd in group stages.

10/11 Europa League. Lost in the playoff round to Utrecht

09/10 Europa League group stages. Finish 3rd

The idea that if we dominate domestically then we should accept getting embarrassed in Europe is absurd. We finished bottom of our Europa League group on 3 points in 2015/16. Were we worried about losing a league to Aberdeen on a tiny fraction of our resources?

I have no idea what we will win next season given the state of the team as it stands. What I want is for the custodians of our club not theirs, of our money not theirs, to try to get the best possible people into key positions, and the best possible players on the pitch. If they do that, if they actually try, then I will live with the results. Now I’m going to enjoy my weekend

It’s clearly not something you’re able to get your head around but it is what they are trying to do. It’ seems like an unconventional approach, actually if you look at a lot of the progressive clubs around they also do something similar

Unfortunately we operate in a league where progressive thinking is not only anomaly, it’s seen as being absurd. Every other club underachieves pathetically in Europe but we stil see everyone doing the same thing year after year. The culture produces no young talent and a dreadful national team with a tactically constpated manager

Spending all your money on the best players you an afford is very simplistic, short-sighted and doesn’t suggest a progressive outlook
