Summer of the long Copa

491

Canada face Venezuela overnight in a game which if the South Americans lose, will see the final Celtic player break for the summer.  Even if Canada are eliminated in the small hours of Saturday morning, Alistair Johnston will have a short break before picking up for the new term.  Venezuela topped their group with maximum points, so will start favourites.

Celtic’s first competitive game is four weeks away, while the squad head to the USA in less than a fortnight.  Brendan Rodgers could be tempted to start the season with Anthony Ralston at right back to extend Johnston’s break.

Alistair has played every minute of Canada’s campaign, whereas Cameron Carter-Vickers Copa America experience with the USA was limited to one substitute appearance.  Neither will be properly rested for the new campaign, no matter how much extended leave Brendan allows.

    That 4-1 Clydebank game

Graeme Barclay debut in goal for Celtic that day as well I think. Might have been only appearance.

Big Jock had lost faith in Ally Hunter and Denis Connaghan and we signed Peter Latchford on loan before the next round, an away win at Easter Road.

  3. Big Jimmy from earlier cheers.

Hope you are well my big buddy.

When I am back I will be at the next meet up, althoughI did get a date for my knee operation on the day we came back from Tenerife so had to tell them for the 100th time my holiday dates but God willing and knee operation dates I will be at next shipwreck meeting.

  4. Bothwell born goalkeeper Graham Barclay joined Celtic in 1973 from Lanarkshire Junior club Blantyre Victoria, and was dubbed “a great prospect“.

He stayed at Parkhead for 4 seasons but was always behind Peter Latchford, Denis Connaghan and Ally Hunter in the battle for the No.1 shirt. Not exactly the most glamorous names in the world of goalkeeping (or even Celtic’s) but Graham Barclay still never made a league appearance for Celtic.

I can identify all the players except the player on the extreme right of the picture, Neil Mochan, David McParland and Jock Stein.

I think it might be Johnny Gibson but not certain.

Although I would have thought George McCluskey would have been in the photo.

Still to trap for today’s matches are:- Aipple, celtic mac, & maccargo

After last night’s matches, we have a few making a late Mark Cavendish like sprint to topple the Yellow Jersey leader, Jobo Baldie, but have they gone too early? It could be the results of the final and 3rd/4th place forecasts that decide it.

    Jobo Baldie- 42.5 pts

    2= 18 Yard Man & hairlikespaghetti- 42 pts

    4= SFTB & One Malloy- 41 pts

6= ACGR & Bada Bing (climbing 15 places)- 39.5 pts

Who’s backing the form team in the Swiss v. England tie and who will back the plucky English underdogs?

  8. If I recall correctly. John Gibson was one of many players we brought in after selling King Kenny for £440, 000 (many of whom weren’t very good). I think Gibson was tiny and rememver we bought a really tall guy at the same time. Tall guy not in photo and not very good. Happy days😕. Maybe we can buy that wee Yamal guy. He might be better😁

Good afternoon all from the Queens Park Cafe. Dropped Mrs BRRB off at the Forge. Used up 2 barrels of disinfectant to get rid of the smell of hun.😷

John Dowie and TomMcAdam were the two players signed after Kenny left, leading to the dire 77-78 season, aided by such luminaries as Frank Munro and Roy Kaye.

Of course we also lost Danny McGrain,he used to be a hun but he’s alright now” to injury for long spells. Pat Stanton also retired due to injury, leading to a collapse in the form of Rodfy McDonald.

Ronnie Glavin and Joe Craig were not the same players after Kenny left in my opinion.

    John Dowie was awful.

  13. In: None.

Out: Sead Haksabanovic, forward (Malmo, undisclosed); Joe Hart, goalkeeper (retired); Rocco Vata, forward (Watford, undisclosed); Magnus Mackenzie, defender (Queen’s Park); Benny-Jackson Luyeye, midfielder.

Loan ended: Adam Idah, forward (Norwich City); Paulo Bernardo, midfielder (Benfica).

Loan out: Marco Tilio, forward (Melbourne City, loan extension).

  14. Latchford, Filippi, Kay, Dowie , Munro , Garner.

Not sure if they all played together , no disrespect but it’s not exactly a golden period in our history.

  15. Big ,give us a wave, Peter Latchford certainly not the worst keeper we ever had.

  16. garygillespieshamstring on

We could have been in a bit of trouble in 77-78 had it not been for Peter Latchford in goal.

Only t season I can remember the Celtic player of the year being a goalkeeper.

  17. garygillespieshamstring on

    Borgo,

Garner didn’t come here till after Frank Munro had left.

Big Billy signed him after the 4-2 season, after Willie Garner had played well for him when he was manager at Aberdeen.

Funnily enough, Garner and Munro both had horrendous debut matches against St Mirren.

Thanks for that. Couldn’t remember the timelines.

I’ve seen on here in the past some posters sticking up for Willie.

Feel a bit bad listing those players, lots of reasons why it doesn’t work out for some.

  20. garygillespieshamstring on

TBH, I thought he would be a good signing for us as I had seen him play well in the past.

He never really recovered from his first game and never really looked fit when playing for us.

Also possible that our style of play left him more exposed than he was at Aberdeen.

Frank Munro was a very good player in his day but was well past his best when he came to us.

It didn’t help that, with apologies to the divine comedy’s national express song, “ his arse was the size of a small country” by the time he came to us.

  21. live from downing street, railings full of saint george flags bunting, they are supporting their team.

  22. Off topic and no personal benefit for me whatsoever.

Seeing that some on here are over in Spain for holidays I would recommend MERCADONA supermarkets. Good products at reasonable prices. And about the only place you can get fresh milk! They also offer good conditions for their workforce, open from 9-9 but closing on a Sunday to give folks a day off.

Agreed – was in the new one they have built at Cala D’or marina earlier today. Best selection and prices – and their colours are green and gold. A bit petty but that’s what happens in the close season when missing the fitba
