Sun setting on striker flop, Football for Schmucks

681

News that the sun is setting on Amido Balde’s Celtic career will be welcomed far and wide.  His arrival on the back of a few YouTube clips and what now appears to have been a Portuguese marketing scam is a salutary lesson on how easy it is to expire transfer and wage budget, while incurring the even greater cost of poor recruits – Champions League failure.

We will never get them all right, but the processes Celtic went through to recruit a striker in the summers of 2012 (Lassad, Miku), 2013 (Balde, Pukki) and 2014 (Guidetti, Scepovic) are worth some urgent revision.  None were able to hold down a regular place in the team.

In mitigation, it’s easier to recruit a keeper or a defender (which we’ve done very well at recently) than a striker, but there will be lessons to learn from those six signings.  Quickly, I hope.

On the positive side, all of the aforementioned arrived with a degree of realism attached.  I noticed this morning: “Wabara really is in the mould of Barcelona great Dani Alves”.  This isn’t fun anymore.  Honest football fans (many are) are being treated like simpletons.

It’s like that Steve Carell movie, Dinner for Schmucks, where Paul Rudd doesn’t have the stomach to laugh at absurdly unfortunate guests.  Better they are put out of their misery than dragged through an ignominious humiliation before inevitably emptying their pockets at the alter of a Sports Direct retail contract.

Feyenoord took Henke to court to get him to honour his contract. No way did they want to off load him.

His record for Feyenoord is actually very decent for a winger wide mifield player which is what he was at the time and at the start of his Celtic career. Henrik was not a striker when he signed. It took him a few seasons to look the part as an out and out striker. He did have pedigree playing for Sweden in WC USA.

If you take a prolific goal scorer from most levels and put him in a Celtic side he should easily get 20+ a season. I would fancy getting that myself!

Far too much is made of the striker role. Skippy banged in plenty and at 31 he is back at Motherwell. He was never a world beater. Hopefully we can sign a special striker and really see them in action but historically our best strikers have been out of form (Cadete, Sutton, etc) when signed or developed into top class strikers at Paradise (Pierre, Henrik, etc.

  6. Well done Greece on using Democracy(via a referendum) to determine whether renegotiation/repayment is made to these feral capatilists. The same structural adjustment policies are being put forward by I.M.F that have ravaged Africa for decades,as medicine to Greece’s problems, this being suggested whilst at the same time no limitations those whose speculation and insider knowledge caused the crisis.

It is catastrophic to think that the Greeks who gave us the philosophical basis for Economics are being subjected to this anti democratic and anti people strain of feral capatilism.Let Democracy control Capatilism not the other way about.

  12. I am so simplistic a chap that on CQN I have been described as being mental.

However, as they are invaluable to a sides success, in attempting to acquire quality strikers, one must be prepared to to pay quality prices.

The days are gone when the price could be artificially lowered by a Joe McBride making it plain to his club that if he did not go to Celtic, then he was going nowhere.

Galling as PL might find it, a price has to be paid for entrance to the big boys Champions League party.

If you are unprepared to pay it so be it.

A transfer window that started on an optimistic note of Celtic acting decisively is beginning to evolve into the same old same old where scrambling about in the last hours of the transfer window will be the order of the day.

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I honestly do not know this Macjay but one thing all Celtic supporters do know is how offensive the Big Jock K*** slogan is and he quite deliberately used it in a very clear and (to me) mocking fashion at least twice (it wasn’t just that he said it, the text was set out from the rest of his comments to bring attention to it). Furthermore, what is the ‘one for Neil Lennon’ (growing up in Belfast this term had an ominous meaning) or am I now being really paranoid?

Oh well, I only dip in and out of this forum as the mood takes me so I will leave the more seasoned campaigners to judge the BJ* digs.

  17. quonno

Respectfully disagree. Chelsea spent £50m on free scoring Torres and got next to nothing from him.

Man Utd paid a loan player something like £300k a week and he didn;t score many.

Money guarantees nothing. Kris Commons has more CL goals than some £30m strikers and much did he cost?

A wee bit loath to get involved in this one.

When posters talk about the IRA do they mean the late 20th century version or what the British media would have painted as the good IRA of an earlier time.

I have absolutely no idea how many Celtic supporters were in either version of the IRA.

I have always felt that many of those who want to belt out the Ould numbers at Celtic matches, would literally shit themselves if they were approached by a IRA recruiting officer and asked to stop talking the talk and walk the walk.

The above in no way condones or condemns the IRA in its various guises.
