Sunset for inverted fullbacks

144

Celtic’s system of play, which seems to have been figured out by several opponents in recent months, is an adaptation of the system Ange Postecoglou first implemented here in 2021.  Since then, we have used inverted fullbacks.  Central defenders go wide, Callum McGregor drops deep, and one of both fullbacks move into central midfield.

Ange used this at Yokahama, indeed, it has been used at all City Football Group clubs since Pepe Guardiola arrived at City in 2016.  It is worth noting that Manchester City’s remarkable run of poor results started against Postecoglou’s Tottenham, on 30 October.

City won their five games going into that match, but won only one of their next 13 (something has been fixed, as they have won their last two games).  Ange knows City’s system better than anyone else in the EPL.  It makes sense that he saw a vulnerability which was subsequently copied by others.

Celtic’s form pivoted far less than Manchester City’s (although opponents are not at the same level).  Form was breathtaking up to and including the win against Leipzig on 5 November – one week after Ange defeated Man City.  Our next game was at Kilmarnock, where Derek McInnes’ side gave us a torrid time, before losing 0-2.

The history of football tactics has regular phases.  A successful innovation becomes widely adopted.  Then someone figures out an exploit, which is adopted by others until the original innovation is removed from the game by evolution.  We may be witnessing the sun setting on the inverted fullback.

  1. FF ,

Today they are on about our propaganda machine making up things that never happened. This one stole the show. “Rangers fans giving the Nazi salute .Add that to the never happened list.

Tell you what did actually happen though,

Celtic Park closed during WW2,due to their support for the Nazis”

Brendan DID change our shape and approach for the Atalanta game. In a big way. He is more adaptive than Ange was.

Whenever our players do things that some supporters don’t like…..there is very likely a reason for what was done.

Just because we don’t think it was the best option, and that is done repetitively will have been what the manager wanted. The fact that we don’t like it or understand it, doesn’t mean it wasn’t the right thing to do.

Totally agree and we cannot argue with his record.

What we can debate about is his dismissive put down of the supporters.

Also think it’s extremely rich of him to speak the word respect…….etc etc

    —————————-

I don’t honestly think he was dismissively putting down those dissatisfied supporters who expressed exasperation loudly and clearly on Sunday. I see him being hurt, disappointed and saying to himself “why can’t you see what we are doing and the results it is bringing?

I have now watched today’s presser three times and quite frankly I am worried about the eventual outcome of all this. It was a very sombre interview and Brendan was not for backing down from his original stance. That he was prepared to allow the questioning to occupy almost the whole of the press conference (he could have said let’s move on and talk about tomorrow’s game, but he didn’t) tells me how strongly he feels and how much the overt criticism of the team has affected him.

He oultlined that the team on the field get tremendous encouragement and thrive when we are all together inside Celtic Park – it was glaringly obvious that that wasn’t the case on Sunday.

This was/is a big deal for the manager and I really don’t know what he will do – if it was me I might be seriously considering my position and wondering if Celtic Park was the right place for me – I hope to God I’m wrong – who on earth would we get to replace him?

  4. Weeron,

It also doesn’t mean it was the RIGHT thing to do; certainly

every time. We seem to do it every time. The opposition are now well aware of this and adopt their tactics to deal with it. Imo, there ought to b3 some variety in our play.

    the celtic way.

  8. Initially, I didn’t want hm back, but now I must say we are lucky to have Brendan Rodgers.

  9. SAINT STIVS @ 8:14 PM,

    Truth –

    What Rodgers said today…

…So that is all I am here to do, to manage and be the best that I possibly can be for Celtic in my time here, however long that is.

And of course, I will stand up for that. And then once the time is done, I can step back, wait for the next manager to come in, support him and look forward to seeing 60 games of high-intensity football for 95 minutes every week. And I will be really happy.

Be careful what you wish for…

    Hail Hail

  10. on reflection, what is moore arrogant ?

a manager asking supporters to support the team.

or supporters telling a manager how to manage ? or do a press conference, or what he should say, or not say.

  11. I have been of the opinion that Brendan Rodgers is the best fit manager for Celtic.

    That view has not changed.

I am also of the opinion that attending fans want to see Celtic play fast attacking football where possible. Even against anti football teams that visit Parkhead.

We have set the standards, we have spent a lot of money to procure the players who have set these standards.

When fans see us falling below these standards they know it. They are not daft and wish to see us optimise our potential.

There is nothing wrong for wanting us to be the best we can be.

I think Brendan was stung be our performance and criticism he received over a very poor showing at Greyskull. Put bluntly it was woeful, and Brendan knows that.

Our fans are turning out in horrendous conditions, some travelling great lengths to get there.

    We have horrid weather.

We have much sickness in our midst.

Christmas and New Year merryment is long gone.

    People are skint.

Credit card bills are now hitting.

Pubs resturants and shops are generally empty.

People feel depressed. SAD is real

    Depressing economic climate

We go to the games to lift our spirits. Football has always had an element of escapeism .

Give the fans a break Brendan.

    HH.

  12. glendalystonsils on

Brendan’s demeanour after the St Mirren game and again today might have been a lot different if it hadn’t been for the Ibrox debacle .

That was a huge black mark on the players and on him as manager. The ensuing questioning of his ‘system’ would not have gone down well given his personality .

There could be a lot more to it than that of course , but personally I think it would still be nagging at him .

  13. lets all do the huddle on

  14. It’s a baffler, this pickle BR is creating for himself, some players and the club.

I thought he came back to us for three reasons; 1) To Rehab his own career and 2) Repair the PR damage caused by his hasty departure to the Foxes and 3) Cos he was going to be financially backed to pick players HE fancied to have a decent pop at Europe.

Now, with all the aims near reached, he’s picked a bone of contention with fans he claims to deeply respect.

A weird kind of self-sabotage: I expect that kind of bungle from someone of the Belgian Baldy’s calibre but not of Brendan’s.

Clearly he’d like the fans unified behind his team; that’s probably his desired goal for the impending schedule.

Scolding them on how to be superior fans right after his team showed themselves to be inferior to the Huns (on that one day) is a puzzling tactical flaw from a manager who usually gets his tactics spot-on.

    KATE(BEATABOUTTHE)BUSH CSC

  15. The forecast for Glasgow tomorrow evening could be a low as -6c to -8c. That is cold by any standard, affects players physically and even the pressure of and the movement of the ball. Might even affect the inverted full-back. Snowflakes? Plenty on here tonight…

  16. I’m not going to beat about the bush when I am talking about the bush. I am experienced enough to say what I think and what I feel, but not in a derogatory way to anyone”

The above leaves no doubt that this is personal to Brendan. There will be an outcome and resolution – trouble is we don’t know what it will be. If enough fans turn against him, and a straw-poll on here seems to suggest that it could be the case, why would he stay at a club, where no matter how much success he brings, there is significant ‘noise’ against him – this is no ‘storm in a teacup’.

If some are not happy with the manager and the success he has always brought to the club, let them dig out their ‘Fraudgers’ banners once again and make their presence known. HH

  17. Celtic played with 2 strikers in the box until Razzmatazz Rodgers arrived in a One horse league as well.

Rangers in 2016 full of 4th Division players equals Zero opposition.

Rangers are the same club…until Celtic FC officially announces this NOT to be the case.

Ten teams in the league have virtually the same resources as Motherwell FC ie: £300,000.

£300,000 vs £70 million Celtic, izny much of a game is it?

Rangers with an improvement on Pedro’s barking caravan level of quality, reached a Europa League final, and were a missed penalty kick away from wiping out forever, Celtic’s 2003 Seville Uefa Cup Final heroics which was like the Champions league 2 before it got restructured.

Rangers reached a European final. Timmy general response: “Eh, it was coz of Covid.”

So, Covid was Celtic specific? Ah mean, even the Huns saw through the Covid Plandemic scam, and slyly pocketed the money fund, whilst Celtic FC and fans engaged in virtue signalling – “We’re the ghood guys!”

Rangers stopped Celtic reaching 10 in a row. Timmy general response: “Eh, it was coz of Covid.”

Ah mean, when only Jim Goodwin the then St Mirren manager in the whole of Scottish football, or the whole of Scottish Politicians and Media [ who are all the same ] Remember Janey Godly the Krankie vaxxeen shill?

Look where that got her, sad to say, that when you fall for the lies of a blatant 100% liar, like Krankie, your going to be deceived, or much worse. Sadly for Janey it was the latter.

Jim Goodwin stood out as the odd man out in a country drowning in lies and corruption with cliques everywhere you look, all feathering their own nests, and wanting ‘others’ who refused to believe the words of any swamp or its representatives, the deceived wanted the anti vaxxers locked up and banned from society. Tims with their new black hats on….

    https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GgtBnaJbcAEr6Mi?format=jpg&name=small

That is what happens when you support cancel culture. Cancel culture is from the same sewer as wokeism.

Jim Goodwin saw through it all when he said: “No football fan should be asked to show their papers to get into a football game.”

They say that: “Show me your papers” is the first step to Totalitarianism. Well we have gone way beyond that haven’t we?

All seating at football started the sly road to that evil place. Now the clubs [ with £billionaires pulling the strings ] demands to know your phone number, bank account number, email address, home address, etc, etc, hand that info to the 3 letter agencies and within minutes they know where your wife works, what school your children go to, etc, etc.

All of that – to get in to see a game of football? The club have probably allowed every one of you to be filmed individually during games to add to any hidden profiles that they have about you that you don’t know about…yet?

Go for a job and your details are probably compared to your “Celtic fan file” that you don’t know about…yet?

Football is no longer a game any more – how can it be when you are shamed into taking the knee for Black Lives Matter money laundering scam, but no knee will be taken for the genocided Irish ancestors whom you all sold out, by going along with the famine narrative.

What’ll it be next? “The Palestine Famine?” Will you go along with that as well? Your being had by those who would sell you out as soon as look at you.

Would Brendan have ran his [ selective ] mouth against the Jungle era fans? He would have been chased down London road…never to be seen again.

And that is the difference. The Jungle had big steel balls. Now there are ZERO balls in the entire supporter base. Brendan picked a fight because he knows the fan base is full of cliques – but there is no Jungle.

No Jungle makes Celtic fans vulnerable. Do you think the cops would have tried to ‘kettle’ Jungle era fans?

Society is different now in lots of ways – It is weak everywhere and that makes for dangerous times, and cheap punk opportunists, sadly Brendan just proved that he is one of those.

Working his ticket, because, he might have had his bluff called by a PLC which has been given Rodgers a lot of money, hmmm, and his playing style has been sussed, so what does Brendan do?

Hang around and get found out by Young Boys, etc?

Or create a scene…and leave unexpectedly?

    Ego’s don’t like to take a bruising.

    Tough!

  18. I was just delighted I to have found a pub in a small Tenerife village that I can watch tomorrow nights game .

Didn’t see his presser , however getting a bit concerned with Brendan’s comments , looking like there’s more to this than we first thought .

No doubt Brendan’s ego has been bruised by some of the criticism aimed at himself and the team recently. .

The keyboard managers better be careful what they wish for .

He’s forgotten more than most of us will ever know about football .

  19. Greenpinta,

I agree.I think we were very fortunate to get Brendan back, but I will not kiss ass.The fans watched us being humiliated by dross on the Thursday. The millions watching could see, that changes had to be made start of the second half.No idea what BR was watching, but sent out the same team, who got worse.Scales,Hatate,GT,should have been off,and tactical changes made, but no.Same dross at the end.Saturday, fans buzzing to see a reaction, get the same poor fare again. That’s 115 minutes of it.I never heard booing, just fans getting annoyed at the continuous passing bac

k and forth, mostly in our own half.In the opponents half no problem.

No need at all for the outburst, and to complain about the song, hardly belted out,

    in the 89th minute,was nonsense.

Giving our enemies a good laugh and column inches to print.Sheer stupidity.

  20. Having been at the game on sunday i was unaware of any great change in the support around me

  21. I think it could affect the attendance tomorrow night.Hope not.

Two in each half will ease the mood.

Do we travell up to Dingwall on the Friday night?.Surely.

  22. Some on this blog won’t be happy until BR is gone and Lawwell can get back his influence on signings prices paid ages of those signed and who the head coach/manager is, both lennon and moyes are unemployed at the moment. Any slip by BR in terms of results/comments sees them on being highly critical.

  23. glendalystonsils on

You can tell by the amount of attention the media is giving this non-story , just how much they long for Brendan to be gone, as their favourites will be a byline while he is here .

I hope (and believe) he’ll be at the club in whatever capacity for years to come .

  24. Rodgers is a very good manager and sure as he’ll knows a lot more than me about the game, it’s not my career it’s a very intense hobby. I go to the movies, restaurants and hotels etc and I am able to tell you if I watched a good or bad movie, had a good meal or enjoyed the stay. I don’t need to be qualified in any of those areas to give feedback/ view. The difference between football and the other activities is that it is only in football and sports in general that the customer’s views are dismissed.

I have no issue with building the play slowly, it’s Rodgers preferred way of playing but it is not the only way of playing. I have lost count of the number of times I have seen far superior team than ours vary play to be more direct, change attack (through the centre, out wide etc).

Taylor has bèen poor most of the season and has refused to sign a contract extension with celtic. celtic supporters have not given him a hard time, no booing of him etc, which shows a level of respect. Celtic supporters sing KT song, cringe if not signed up yet, but fact is the supporters understand KT is of a very high level and would improve the team, same as Rodgers apparently, hence Rodgers and the supporters agree which highlights that perhaps the supporters know something after all. Funny old world 😀. Point is no one has a monopoly of knowledge and wisdom in any area of study/ work.

  25. spikeysauldman on

was wondering what scorelines all of the recycling-haters think we should have had at CP versus 10 behind the ball most of the time. the last 3 home games were 3-0, 4-0, 4-0. Serious question btw.

there were some patches of 5 aside style football from my recollection.

i’m defo watching a different game from many on here.

yes, sometimes i wish the first thought would be drive forward, second thought sideways or back. yes i’d wish taylor/scales just hit the channels with the ball, or whipped it up the wing when under pressure instead of an intercepted pass across the pitch.

but FFS, some of the chat on here is a joke and sometimes just plain bullshit. but thats just my opinion which some will reckon is also bullshit.

we’re not a tier 1 or even tier 2 euro team – would be great if the club aspired to be tier 2 – so at the end of the day after i’ve moaned and groaned i’ll trust the players and the backroom staff most of the time.
