Sunset for inverted fullbacks

144

Celtic’s system of play, which seems to have been figured out by several opponents in recent months, is an adaptation of the system Ange Postecoglou first implemented here in 2021.  Since then, we have used inverted fullbacks.  Central defenders go wide, Callum McGregor drops deep, and one of both fullbacks move into central midfield.

Ange used this at Yokahama, indeed, it has been used at all City Football Group clubs since Pepe Guardiola arrived at City in 2016.  It is worth noting that Manchester City’s remarkable run of poor results started against Postecoglou’s Tottenham, on 30 October.

City won their five games going into that match, but won only one of their next 13 (something has been fixed, as they have won their last two games).  Ange knows City’s system better than anyone else in the EPL.  It makes sense that he saw a vulnerability which was subsequently copied by others.

Celtic’s form pivoted far less than Manchester City’s (although opponents are not at the same level).  Form was breathtaking up to and including the win against Leipzig on 5 November – one week after Ange defeated Man City.  Our next game was at Kilmarnock, where Derek McInnes’ side gave us a torrid time, before losing 0-2.

The history of football tactics has regular phases.  A successful innovation becomes widely adopted.  Then someone figures out an exploit, which is adopted by others until the original innovation is removed from the game by evolution.  We may be witnessing the sun setting on the inverted fullback.

    But.

    Seriously .

The ego thing. If that is directed at our manager. Well dearie me.

Some on this blog won’t be happy until BR is gone and Lawwell can get back his influence on signings prices paid ages of those signed and who the head coach/manager is, both lennon and moyes are unemployed at the moment. Any slip by BR in terms of results/comments sees them on being highly critical.

It’s good for business, that’s what they want you to think 👍

  4. I do not know anyone that will turn up at the movies. A restaraunt or a hotel and shout at the staff for not performing to a service level expected.

    What a stupid comparison.

  6. The support generally, the Green Brigade specifically have an opportunity to show some maturity during the Dundee United game tomorrow (today). Or they can exacerbate the situation with Brendan Rogers. We’ll see soon enough.

  7. With the system we play it is extremely important that we don’t give the ball away back to middle. Anyone remember what happened when we did that recently? por cierto.

  8. Good morning from a still snow covered North Staffs. The Vale match against the Hollywood xi was postponed last night.

Show me a football manager and I’ll show you an ego – it’s a prerequisite of the job.

Good luck to the bhoys tonight

    Good morning CQN.

    Missed the blog yesterday.

    Work, eh?

    Game day.

    Looking forward to tonight.

Haven’t seen latest presser and haven’t been paying too much attention to the latest around Brendan.

There’s always something going on in the background in football – and the MSM almost always pick up the wrong end of the stick.

Whatever it is I’m trusting it will play out then be forgotten about.

  11. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Every manager in football publicly proclaims

“I don’t pay ANY attention to the noise”

Every manager in football pays attention to the noise to some extent.

    They’re only human.

On this particular one with BR – his comment about a week ago

“from people who couldn’t manage their way out of an empty room” struck me at the time.

Not a criticism BTW – but it was unlike him.

I suspect (with no evidence whatsoever) that Brendan has been irked by the ridiculously overblown response to us losing a domestic game.

If so, I think he is entitled to be irked.

Some of the “the foundations are crumbling” hysteria after 02 January was embarrassing.

We expect our manager to be a strategist

(as well as a coach, tactician, manager, leader, ambassador, talent spotter, motivator and father figure).

If his strategy is predicated around

    – winning when it matters,

    – picking up trophies regularly

    – BUT occasionally underperforming in low key games without impacting the bigger picture?

    I’m on board.

  12. Taylor has had a few good moments this season but he has been poor, and often absence at key points, does not make him bad player but clearly the system exposes his weaknesses.

The usual suspects, they’re here all week 👍

  17. I hope tonight is a love-in of epic proportions .I fear some will be out to create mischief.

If the GB decides to give Brendan a hard time, either with banners or songs, then we may be witnessing the last few months of him here. Because he is not a happy camper at the moment and, as far as I can make out, that is due to him deciding to take things dramatically out of context.

Killing time in work until the bus leaves at 4:30 so catching up on the interviews (thanks to the CCV interview link posted – missed that one).

I thought BR’s wee outburst was hurt ego initially but I wonder now if it was not a more calculated move to set the media agenda away from being too negative about the team which played very badly in one game and has been a way off peak performance levels for a good while now?

  22. So much wrong with BR’s, disrespectful statement.

From the double standards of him abandoning us , to embarrassing Trusty , by removing him at half time during the LCF at Hampden .

A decision that proved wrong when you see the performances put in by Scales .

Scales whom I had praised as being our most improved player under BR .

Is BR working his ticket again ?

He created this whole episode .

    It was uneccessary.
