Sunshine amid murky football shadows

Before we get down to less important matters, let me know, did you buy Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas?

There are so many reasons to be cynical about football people (players, directors and fans alike) in the modern era it is scarcely worth listing them but occasionally a pillar of strength comes along and changes all the rules.

This morning’s headlines that Georgios Samaras has attracted interest from an English slumbering giant is reason enough to highlight the dedication of this model professional.  Georgios arrived at Celtic on loan in January 2008 and was instrumental in the historic league win that year.  When he completed his permanent transfer from Manchester City he took an enormous cut in wages because he wanted to be a Celtic player.

Thanks for the great support for the CQN Annual. You can order online here, time is running out for shipping before Christmas!

His talent and effectiveness has meandered, a bit like those looping runs he would go on with the ball, since then and for a while he was subject to considerable abuse from ‘supporters’.  At one point he had the chance to leave but his message to Celtic was simple, ‘If you want me to stay, I’ll stay and fight for my place.  This is my club’.

The story of the rebirth of Celtic is also the story of the rebirth of Georgios Samaras.  He is the epitome of the modern footballer: strong, skilful and intelligent, he would get into any top squad in Europe.

There is no chance of him going to England, Celtic will not sell him and even if they accepted a bid, the player shows no inclination of wanting to leave.  He is currently prime candidate for Player of the Year and is our most feared player in the Champions League.

You have six days to buy Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas in support of Celtic Charity and Teenage Cancer.  This is what we’re all about, don’t talk to me about football until I hear from you on the subject that really matters.

  1. The Red Telephone on

What happened to White Brick Man on Talksport this morning? Was looking forward to hearing somebody actually pish their trousers on live radio.

  2. From the Press Gazette.

A Daily Record sports writer who quit the paper with a stinging attack on rival journalists and bloggers over their coverage of the Rangers FC tax case has landed a new job – as the club’s head of PR.

Jim Traynor announced he was leaving the paper after 37 years last week in a column that took aim at some journalists’ “rabid desire to help bring down Rangers, a fierce desire that, sadly, was widespread”.

He told readers that he had not been sacked or made redundant and was asked to remain with the paper, adding: “my conscience won’t allow me to stay in our profession”.

Traynor, who worked at The Herald and the Daily Express before joining the Record, said 2012 had been a “twisted and bitter year during which Scottish football, unable to deal with the Rangers crisis in a civilised manner, has tried to tear itself apart”.

Rangers entered administration in February 2012 and was later placed into liquidation following its tax dispute with HMRC, when its assets were sold to a new company.

But last month the ‘old company’ won its appeal against a bill from HMRC over its use of Employment Benefit Trusts (EBTs) from 2001 to 2010, though HM Revenue and Customs announced it is to appeal the decision.

Traynor was critical of the “anonymous bloggers” who said “over and over Rangers would be done for cheating the tax man”, in particular the award-winning Rangers Tax Case blog.

“Even now so many – and I include some fellow journalists – still cannot bring themselves to accept Rangers did not cheat the tax man by using EBTs,” he wrote, adding: “Perhaps in time more will be written about this kind of hack and the rabid desire to help bring down Rangers, a fierce desire that, sadly, was widespread.

On Saturday Rangers announced Traynor will join the club as director of communications from early next year.

“James will be head of media and oversee the development of all media platforms including Rangers TV, digital, online and print publications,” it said.

“James joins Rangers following a distinguished journalistic career with The Herald, Express and Daily Record newspapers as well as being a presenter with the BBC.

“In his role at Ibrox, James will be supported by the Rangers Media editorial team, the press office and external media advisers, Media House.”

  4. Lennon n Mc….Mjallby you make a very good point.

Banks have limits on how they lend and these limits are categorised by country, industry sector, individual companies, length of loan etc ….

So for example a bank may not be permitted to have more than 10% of its total lending to the leisure industry. As football clubs increase the risk of default in their sector that percentage will be cut. As funds available to be lent to that sector decrease, and competition for those funds increases, the interest rate charged will increase. This is exacerbated because The Bank of England, or whatever regulatory body is in charge, will set similar limits for all banks. This gives the impression banks are acting together in some kind of conspiracy.

It is at this point that private investors will come in to take advantage of the high rates on offer. So in the case of Rangers, Ticketus in effec lent £60 with the promise of £100 to come back in 2 yrs later. A good rate of return. Especially if secured on the stadium and ticket revenue from that stadium.

  5. A FULL investigation is underway after a young Stirling Albion fan was allegedly struck by a coin at the weekend’s game against Rangers at Ibrox.

Operations Director for Stirling Albion, Stuart Brown said he had spoken with the Head of Security at Rangers FC at the start of the week regarding the incident which was said to have taken place during the half time interval, having been advised by the police.

Brown said police are treating this as a criminal offence and will be including a review of the CCTV footage.

Stuart Brown said: “It is disappointing in the extreme that a headline arising from Saturday’s game versus Rangers should be in connection with one of our young fans being struck by a coin rather than the focus being about our battling performance that arguably came within a couple of inches of pulling off a remarkable draw.

“The Police are treating this as criminal offence and if the individual(s) concerned can be formally identified, further action will be taken. Rangers have also given me the assurance that anyone found guilty of such an offence will be banned for life from attending matches at Ibrox.”

Brown added that he would ‘communicate further’ when the outcome of the investigation is known.

He said: “In the meantime, I’ve been in contact with the young fan and his father to update them on developments as described above and to offer my apologies on behalf of SAFC that he should be subjected to such a vile act, perpetrated by a mindless idiot for whom I hold nothing but contempt.

“As ever in football, it is disappointing that a small minority let down the great majority.”

  6. Afternoon all, anyone know if we have anyone coming through the reserves good enough to take up the centre back and left back positions if – god forbid – players were to get injured? On paper, those position seem like the ones we should be looking at in January.

  7. ASonOfDan Traynor IMO is being employed for his ability to add to the siege mentality CG is trying to engender and tap into for the dosh.

I don’t think JT wil be effective in that role.

I do think that the proposed changes to the league where it’s effectively two league tournaments in one season will help Rangers. Investors will be able to hedge their bets and that’s how Rangers will try to sell it i.e. – “we only have to come fourth twice and we’re back in the SPL. So we can offer you three stages of investmet. To come fourth, to come fourth again, and then to compete in the SPL.”

As an investment it could be an earner, whether we like it or not.

  9. Very pleased to see an article singling out Sammi for praise. I’ve always liked him, not just for his ability but mostly because I always felt that his attitude is spot on. I’m delighted that more and more fans are beginning to recognise his value.
