Sunshine amid murky football shadows

771

Before we get down to less important matters, let me know, did you buy Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas?

There are so many reasons to be cynical about football people (players, directors and fans alike) in the modern era it is scarcely worth listing them but occasionally a pillar of strength comes along and changes all the rules.

This morning’s headlines that Georgios Samaras has attracted interest from an English slumbering giant is reason enough to highlight the dedication of this model professional.  Georgios arrived at Celtic on loan in January 2008 and was instrumental in the historic league win that year.  When he completed his permanent transfer from Manchester City he took an enormous cut in wages because he wanted to be a Celtic player.

Thanks for the great support for the CQN Annual. You can order online here, time is running out for shipping before Christmas!

His talent and effectiveness has meandered, a bit like those looping runs he would go on with the ball, since then and for a while he was subject to considerable abuse from ‘supporters’.  At one point he had the chance to leave but his message to Celtic was simple, ‘If you want me to stay, I’ll stay and fight for my place.  This is my club’.

The story of the rebirth of Celtic is also the story of the rebirth of Georgios Samaras.  He is the epitome of the modern footballer: strong, skilful and intelligent, he would get into any top squad in Europe.

There is no chance of him going to England, Celtic will not sell him and even if they accepted a bid, the player shows no inclination of wanting to leave.  He is currently prime candidate for Player of the Year and is our most feared player in the Champions League.

You have six days to buy Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas in support of Celtic Charity and Teenage Cancer.  This is what we’re all about, don’t talk to me about football until I hear from you on the subject that really matters.

No offence meant your way, VP.

IMO, you were reading Arch’s post in a way he did not intend it to be read.

Trivial to see two fans bicker over interpretation of a post and tried to nip it in bud.

We all support the same team.

ps hope you wife can forgive your bickering…..:-)

Still in discombobulated, lurking mode after Saturday.

BTW,a minor criticism, but how many goals have we lost in,say, the last five minutes of either half this season?

Seems a lot,and it is when WE are historically supposed to be scoring!

Cracking goal from Cilian,mind-just not as good as that useless Greek fella’s stoatir…..

    That slumbering giant wouldn’t be the same one that loaned out their 6’4″ forward to West Ham because they wanted to play a different way would it? Actually Sammi is the better of the two players. Samaras has succeeded despite some of the Celtic support. Others have given John Hughes and Tommy Callaghan as players with whom the support had a love-hate relationship, or probably more accurately, who divide the support, but trust me nobody did that better than Hughie Maxwell! Actually Sammi has a long way to go before he matches the feats of Yogi Bear, 186 goals over ten seasons or so. Even so it gives me yet another chance to repeat my er off-repeated mantra;

If you are booing Celtic you are not supporting them, you are abusing Celtic. If, for whatever reason you want to persist in booing Celtic, get yourself one of those new fangled scarves from that wee new club down the river! And boo all you like!

    BMCUW,

Time to get combobulated again then.

Aye we have been getting too many job and knock shifts

Let me think now, the last five games you say, hmmm, one, Saturday :o)

Good post IMO . I agree that we are unlikely to see the best of Miku. Shame.

Sammi is an absolute star on and off the pitch!

Some of the Italian based bhoys might correct me on this but on the morning after we qualified, the main Italian Sports paper had a brief summing up of the teams that Juventus might face.

Under Celtic, it mentioned the Barca result (front page of the Champions league so far) something about playing in a poor league, fabulous home support and record, Hooper and Samaras….”whose beard is venerated by half of the city of Glasgow” !!!

  7. Some people giving Sammi stick for not scoring enough goals – ffs he has never been an out-and-out striker.

In a ten year career he has scored something like 110 competitive goals for various clubs and the Greek national side.

What he brings to the game is a lot more than that! Just look at some of his performances this season – especially in the CL.

Oh!…. and he scored this weekend!

    May Zeus bless Sammi!

Anyone who thinks Sami is an out-and-out striker need only look at his goals return for Greece-6 so far out of 63 appearances.

But the fact that he has those 63 appearances suggests that he has been consistently highly-rated by their management.

  11. I’ve always had a lot of time for Sammi and wanted him to succeed, but did despair at times of it ever happening.

His consistency since the end of last year has been excellent, although at times he tries one thing too many, but he’s still got time to learn and improve further.

Personally I’m delighted for him as he took lots of abuse with not a word of complaint. He never hid and irrespective of the reaction from the crowd always wanted the ball again.

I actually always felt that his confidence took a battering when he was paired with Scott McDonald. He was a constant moaner and whenever he didn’t get the ball would shout at Sammi.

There are still doubters, There is an idiot who sits just behind us in the main stand who is relentless in his criticism of Sammi, getting to the point of being unacceptably abusive and offensive. He dscribes him, in some of the words that I can type here as opposed to his usual form of rnting, as the worse footballer he has ever seen and a disgrace to the shirt.

Anywat, and excellent article Paul and good to see the big man get the credit he deserves for sticking with us.

  12. Paul67, Rod Stewart was on the Carmen Nebel show here in Germany, prime-time Saturday evening, playing ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’. He has a very big following here (even my German mother-in-law is a big fan). I’m certain the single will sell very well and raise lots of money for good Celtic causes. Rod himself was in good form, looked like he’d already downed a couple of Gluehweins in the Green Room.

  13. Sami took a big wage cut to play for Celtic, very few players would do that. The way he has come back after the penalty miss at Poundland (good save tbh),shows the heart the guy has.At 27 he may feel he has 1big move left.I would hate to see him go as i have supported him from that day at Rugby park.If he does decide to go ,or the Club receive a big bid,he would with my thanks and best wishes. The big man owes us nothing.

  14. BMCUW

I think he has actually scored 8 goals in 63 appearances!

But what are 2 goals between friends?!

    Re Sammi

I think the reason the big man gets stick is because we know he has the ability .if he was being played every week and he did not have the ability I,m sure it would be Lenny getting the stick for picking him .

Also IMO the SPL is not ideal for Sammi’s type of game ,he is more adept at the counter attacking side and no SPL team commits enough players forward for the big man to stretch his legs ,this of course is not the case in Europe or when he plays for Greece .

That said I still believe the big man has the quality to get MOTM in more SPL games than he does at present .

I always knew the big man had the quality and it bodes well for us that he is showing it

    Hail hail

According to Skysports stats page,in competitive games,it is NINE so far.

    Not good,IMO.

  17. toscanabhoy @ 15 44 .

Paper I read made no mention of the Samaras beard .

    It did say —– I paraphrase –

Play in a very poor league . Beat Barcelona -must not be underestimated

Fantastic support / fantastic atmosphere .

Excellent goalkeeper . Best outfield players are Samaras and Wanyama.

  18. Great article on a brilliant player. There’s no doubting that Sammi is our talisman at the current time – much like Henrik was.

Definitely my favourite player in the current squad – Mikael Lustig is a player I have a LOT of time for too.

  22. Sammi….If we are struggling in a game and the big man is on the bench, he is the first guy I think of…that is all!

  23. Taking No Bobby’s post point by point there’s nothing in it which is open to dispute.

Talk of Giorgos for Player of the year is way too early.

There’s still a suspicion that his application has been geared to putting himself in the transfer shop window.

What I have noticed this season is that the opinions of those who attend the matches have been far more in favour of Giorgos than the armchair fans like myself.

  24. Abusing players ?

I remember 2 guys having a real ding dong of a barney after 1 of them had hurled serious abuse at a Celtic player during a friendly [ West Ham ?].

    The player was Rafael Scheidt

I agree with you totally regarding Scott McDonald ,IMO there was a negative vibe between the two and at times it led to S Mc refusing to pass to Sammi and Sammi being reluctant to pass to him ( if you think back ,how many times did Sammi beat 2 or 3 players back then only to keep the ball and try to beat a 4th only to lose it )

I remember one game against Hearts when there was a bit of pinball in the Hearts box

the ball eventually fell to S Mc and he had what looked like a shot from a tight angle ,he sliced it and it came off Sammi and into the net ,S Mc raised his hands above his head instinctively but threw them back down when he realised who the ball had hit ,he was the only Celtic player in the box that did not go over to congratulate the big man .

After seeing this I knew GS had to sort it out ,he had a choice to make as it was costing us chances and goals .S Mc went and the rest as they say is history .

Or was it the answer to a totally different question altogether…….
