Sunshine amid murky football shadows

Before we get down to less important matters, let me know, did you buy Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas?

There are so many reasons to be cynical about football people (players, directors and fans alike) in the modern era it is scarcely worth listing them but occasionally a pillar of strength comes along and changes all the rules.

This morning’s headlines that Georgios Samaras has attracted interest from an English slumbering giant is reason enough to highlight the dedication of this model professional.  Georgios arrived at Celtic on loan in January 2008 and was instrumental in the historic league win that year.  When he completed his permanent transfer from Manchester City he took an enormous cut in wages because he wanted to be a Celtic player.

Thanks for the great support for the CQN Annual. You can order online here, time is running out for shipping before Christmas!

His talent and effectiveness has meandered, a bit like those looping runs he would go on with the ball, since then and for a while he was subject to considerable abuse from ‘supporters’.  At one point he had the chance to leave but his message to Celtic was simple, ‘If you want me to stay, I’ll stay and fight for my place.  This is my club’.

The story of the rebirth of Celtic is also the story of the rebirth of Georgios Samaras.  He is the epitome of the modern footballer: strong, skilful and intelligent, he would get into any top squad in Europe.

There is no chance of him going to England, Celtic will not sell him and even if they accepted a bid, the player shows no inclination of wanting to leave.  He is currently prime candidate for Player of the Year and is our most feared player in the Champions League.

You have six days to buy Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas in support of Celtic Charity and Teenage Cancer.  This is what we’re all about, don’t talk to me about football until I hear from you on the subject that really matters.

As for Sammi, he is one of ,if not THE main man for us, yet there are those who still don’t see it.

This quote is all you will ever need to know about George Samaras.

If you have money you can buy anyone you want, but sometimes pride is worth more than money,” said Georgios Samaras, the Celtic forward. “You can’t buy pride. Celtic have this big history for 125 years and the one thing they’ve always had is their pride. Sometimes that gives you extra motivation to go and win games. You can buy a very good player for a lot of money but you need more than that. Sometime it’s about what’s going on in the dressing room and the bond between the players, the coaching staff and the other people working around you.”

  6. My (very) early contenders for POTY:

    – Mikael Lustig

    – Victor Wanyama

    – Giorgios Samaras

    – Scott Brown

    – Fraser Forster.

…. and coming up on the blind side with a late spurt:

    – Efe Ambrose

    – Kris Commons

    – Kelvin Wilson

    – Adam Matthews

    – Joe Ledley

    – Emilio Izzaguire

    – Beram Kayal

    – Gary Hooper

    – Charlie Mulgrew.

I’d like to add my thanks as well.

There were a number of us arrested at Polkemmet Colliery one day whilst picketing.

    We were all jailed overnight.

At Linlithgow Sheriff Court, where we all appeared to answer our individual charges, the Sheriff in charge brought us all in together at the end and told us that regardless of whether we were all innocent or guilty, he had warned the previous strikers that had came up in front of him, that if anyone else was arrested at Polkemmet for strike related matters, he would take the dimmest of views regarding it and that he would find all of us guilty. Which he did!

Basically, it was our own fault for being there. And if the message hadn’t been passed on from those previously up in front of him, then tough!

  8. On the Sammi Debate

The biggest frustration of watching football in a stadium is that we are often surrounded by other fans who have little or no grasp of football basics ( unlike ourselves who are all genius level coaches in our heads)

We also have fans who fail to recognise the fact that they have a distinct advantage over the players on the pitch in terms of seeing the best option available as a move develops.

They take no account of the fact that the pass which is blindingly obvious to them is only so because …

    A. they are sitting 100 feet above the pitch and can see all of the Subutteo players below.

    B. they are not running down the wing trying to keep the ball in play ( Note : pitches are cambered towards the sideline to help drainage , so wingers are fighting against the laws of physics also)

C they are not having to hold off the defender who is trying to break his legs

Ignoring all of these factors the criticism of Sammi in the past always centred around

    A a seeming lack of effort ,

B a seeming lack of goal scoring ,

C a seeming lack of understanding that because he is tall he should be a centre forward

D a seeming tendency to needlessly take on one player too many

    .

I have had arguments ( to the edge of violence) with fellow ‘supporters!’ for their criticism of Sammi – once before he actually came on as a sub.

On Wednesday night for a few minutes after we conceded the equaliser a few disgruntled fans ( only a few) began to look for someone to blame, every stray pass was met with a groan and of course as soon as Sammi did something wrong the vocal dissenters let rip.

I am content with the fact that I have supported Sammi every game he has played ( even his poor games) because I know that no player is perfect every pass , every shot ,or every game.

Not even Henrik or Messi .

I am glad that the Sammi appreciation society continues to grow .

Just watching Martin O’Neill on SSN there.

I really think he is wondering how on earth he can re-motivate his players, and also wondering if he can.

He has some good players there,as proven last season.

But they certainly are not doing it for him at the moment.

I think they need to take a look at themselves-and at Martin. He is clearly suffering more than them.

  11. Sammy is due praise for his recent improvement in performance.

Neil Lennon is due credit for giving him the opportunity to play in a wide position.

He does not score enough goals to be relied upon as a main striker.

He is also very good at defending set pieces.

He still hangs on to the ball too long on occasions.

I can say that he is the most frustrating Celtic player that I can recall.

But he has pace ,height and composure.

    Would I sell him?

The same as with every other player.

    Depends on the sale price.

Sadly,it didn’t have to be legal then.

The authorities made the rules up as they went along.

Buoyed by public enthusiasm for The Falklands War,the Tory Govt presented the miners’ strike as another front against another enemy-the enemy within.

  15. Auldheid,

While I remember that Yogi was more than capable of sheer brilliance, I don’t think he can really be compared with Sammi. Sammi’s ball control is always first class. Too often, players haven’t been on his wavelength and weren’t in a position to received a pass; so, he often ended up taking on one opponent too many. You never knew when Yogi would control the ball. Often, he didn’t. But when he got up a had of steam, there wasn’t a more exciting sight in football. Defenders couldn’t stop him, even by holding on to him. What memories!!!
