Superior fitness and mental fortitude will deliver for Celtic

1174

Having pummelled Newco repeatedly this season there is a notion that we’re going to do it again on Sunday. I’d be tempted to hold that result. St Mirren, an inferior team, demonstrated for 57 minutes how far blanket defending and a bit of organisation can take you. If Celtic record an impressive result at the weekend, they will have to be at the peak of their powers.

We can expect Newco will have watched replays of the opening 20 minutes of our Hogmanay tie dozens of times recently. They will do their best to capture what worked for them during that period, and attempt to replicate it on Sunday.

We started slowly that day, which is not entirely out of character, but one or two also looked spooked by the occasion. Newco started on the front foot, again, something they repeatedly do, but just as they have done throughout the season, they soon ran out of steam.

There is not a great deal they will be able to do about Moussa Dembele, short of cutting off supply to him. As a consequence, they will stick tight to Scott Sinclair, who will have work to do to even get involved in the game, never mind hurt the opposition. This is no bad thing, as while Scott is our most productive player, the team will be full of players hungry and capable of hurting the Newco defence.

This is a game which could be in the balance with 15 minutes remaining, but which Celtic could score three times in the closing period. They have the superior fitness and mental fortitude.

Our greatest danger will be from officialdom. Conceding a penalty, a red card, or both, opens the only door possible for Newco to take anything from the game. Keep cool heads as we’ll do just fine.

  1. Nice to see that the DR has cleared up the situation with the new sevco coach, he is not a practicing Catholic, and only goes to Chapel for funerals,.

Leaves me wondering why they don’t ask any other new managers what they’r religious practices are?

Talk about pandering to bigotry, wooft.

No shame in looking for work, quite the opposite I would say.

No idea if I can help, but having been there I get where you are at. Suggest you let the blog know where you will travel to and what type of work you can do ? Is it painting ? Gardening? Fencing?

Suggest you post later today and again tonight when more people are here. Good luck. HH

  6. Have the SMSM photographers been camped out outside Mozzo beside International Arrivals at Glasgow Airport all week????

Has no one told them he is flying into Edinburgh and they should be camped outside the Costa there????

  8. I’m not one for over confidence when we play them , I’ve seen to many of these games to be that way inclined . I think the st mirren performance , the first half in particular , should have us being a bit more wary . We thumped them at celtic park no doubt , but I don’t think we are as fluent as we were then . We have weaknesses in our team to that they will be aware of . They will be up for it , make no mistake about that , add in the hand picked officials , and we will have a game on our hands . Hope to god I’m wrong .

  9. Saw this comment on an on-line article about Police Scotland warning football fans going to the Glasgow derby on Sunday:

“A number of arrests were made after their first game of this season, with effigies hung from the stand and a toilet block extensively damaged at Celtic Park,”

Pardon me for my dull stupidity, but, while I am aware that arrests were made for the idiotic prank relating to the effigies, I am NOT aware of ANY arrests being made following £40,000+ damage to the toilets!

  10. Potential changes to lineup on Sun from St Mirren game for me would be Jozo for Boyata, Paddy for GMS .

Rest in peace El Diego Bhoy. You came on this blog and shared your anguish and pain, you shocked us all with your prognosis and stunned your Celtic family.

You bravely fought the bastard disease but sadly we lost you in the end.

You will never be forgotten. Never.

Respect for those who will make the trip to celebrate Jim’s life today. I hope it goes as well as can be expected under these sad circumstances.

Hopefully Jim’s girls find solace and some comfort in the love that’s flowed for their father on these pages since his untimely passing.

RIP EDB You will be sadly missed.

  12. !!Bada Bing!! on

Emeraldbee- Polis Scotland are far too busy lifting guys who assaulted the whole Sevco team at the SC Final, to be bothered about huns wrecking toilets…..

I posted this week that i would close the toilets for the vermin on Sunday, and bring in 2 portaloos.

  13. Would like to see Griffiths play off Dembele (Rogic position) with Armstrong beside Brown in centre midfield. Roberts from GMS on the wing. The second half team from last week before we gave Kouassi a run out.

  14. Gary67

I wouldn’t be against seeing that team line up however I think BR would say that would disrupt the balance of his team. I think we will see a very “orthodox” BR team selection (I wouldn’t be surprised to see Forrest start on the right wing)

  15. Just leaving for Celtic Park, we have loaded onto the site a post which will appear at 12.30 today. This is the eulogy which will be delivered at Tommy’s funeral by Alex Gordon, Tommy’s great friend of 48 years.

Thoughts and prayers for EDB too, and all the best to everyone from CQN making their way to Jim’s funeral.

A very sad day for our Celtic family.

  16. If Jozo was match fit i think he would start, due to his lack of game time I think Erik and Boyata will partner. Both still have a lot to prove so need to put in big performances. You could flip a coin between Roberts and Forrest, I think Forrest will start and we will see Roberts circa 60 mins. The only other question is in midfield, it’s a bit too early for Kouassi you would think, Griff did well in the hole last week but I think he will be on the bench. Looks like Bitton will start with Mcgregor as an outside chance.

  17. Supporters will have an opportunity to pay their respects to Tommy at Paradise prior to the funeral service at Daldowie Crematorium. The funeral cortege will drive up the Celtic Way at 11am and will remain there until 11.30am before moving on to Daldowie Crematorium.

And Daldowie are providing a live stream of the funeral service which will be available for supporters to watch on the Celtic YouTube channel at 12noon.

  18. VFR800 is now a Monster 821 on

Paul67, if my memory serves me well both James Forrest and Patrick Roberts have more assists than Scott Sinclair and Moussa has way more goals so I would argue that he ain’t our most productive player; very important but not the most productive.

My belief is that Moussa Dembele and whomever is playing wide right (against the grass) will ultimately be the most productive. Our left side will see them double up on Sinclair because Taverninhio is a crap defender and he will need help from one of his centre backs (good luck there!). They rate the grass but they won’t use Mackay to drop back with them.

Brown will boss the midfield so it will be down to our defenders stepping out (only having Miller to mark) and Armstrong and the other 2 midfielders to utilise the space created when their back line is dragged all over the place.

I expect it to be tightish in the first half a la Ibrox on Hogmanay but they will falter in the second half expect a comfortable 3-0.

Good morning Bhoys from a damp Central Scotland. I see one or two concerns being posted about the Glasgow Derby at the week-end I must admit I am not in the least concerned it will be good to watch the two teams go at each other. We have the better players and the better form but they will be up for it and out to impress there new manager ( if he ever arrives) .I expect a ding dong battle with the victory going to the hoops I predict 2-0 to the hoops. H.H.

  20. Rest in peace EDB and TG. May your family and friends find strength in their memories of great men.

I hope, given the officials’ known leanings to the dark side, that Celtic have asked an impartial expert for an impartial assessment of their performance. Someone like Dermot Gallagher,a renowned former referee from England.

Having met Dermot and spent an enjoyable evening in his company I can assure you he would be anything but impartial in a Celtic Rangers game
