Superior fitness and mental fortitude will deliver for Celtic

1174

Having pummelled Newco repeatedly this season there is a notion that we’re going to do it again on Sunday. I’d be tempted to hold that result. St Mirren, an inferior team, demonstrated for 57 minutes how far blanket defending and a bit of organisation can take you. If Celtic record an impressive result at the weekend, they will have to be at the peak of their powers.

We can expect Newco will have watched replays of the opening 20 minutes of our Hogmanay tie dozens of times recently. They will do their best to capture what worked for them during that period, and attempt to replicate it on Sunday.

We started slowly that day, which is not entirely out of character, but one or two also looked spooked by the occasion. Newco started on the front foot, again, something they repeatedly do, but just as they have done throughout the season, they soon ran out of steam.

There is not a great deal they will be able to do about Moussa Dembele, short of cutting off supply to him. As a consequence, they will stick tight to Scott Sinclair, who will have work to do to even get involved in the game, never mind hurt the opposition. This is no bad thing, as while Scott is our most productive player, the team will be full of players hungry and capable of hurting the Newco defence.

This is a game which could be in the balance with 15 minutes remaining, but which Celtic could score three times in the closing period. They have the superior fitness and mental fortitude.

Our greatest danger will be from officialdom. Conceding a penalty, a red card, or both, opens the only door possible for Newco to take anything from the game. Keep cool heads as we’ll do just fine.

Ffs,I know where his heart lies. But he never let it affect his head, how he refereed.

But yer right enough. There are other former referees available.

Btw,check the forecast over Cheltenham way. As it stands, they might have to water the ground!

Believe me if he had ever got the chance to ref Celtic Rangers he would have let his heart rule his head….while remaining cool detached and professional of course..

Reminds me of my best mate. He’s a qualified ref,but with far too good a job to chuck it.

He runs about pitches in Essex of a weekend,wi a whistle. I would sound like I had a whistle if I tried that amount of running!

Anyway, had he taken it up before he moved south,he’d have been a shoe-in for Grade 1. Right background, right school, etc.

I turned him into an überTim in the early 80s. Farry would have had apoplexy watching him ref Us v Them!!

Your analysis might be near the mark but I find it rather depressing that with all the evidence in public and private that the SFA will do all in their power to favour the outfit operating from Ibrox you have to end with the warning re the officials.

If it turns out Madden a former ST holder at Ibrox does make a game changing decision in dubious circumstances then Celtic only have themselves to blame for at least 5 years of silence and inaction.

Take the possibility of bias out of the way and based purely on football ability there should only be one winner.

My condolences to those who today are mourning the passing of friends, fathers, husbands and heroes.

Boaby Madhun will be the 12th man for Huns on Sunday. I still think they’d need 14…wbo are the linesmen?

  8. Bobby Midden can try till he’s blue in the face to help his heroes but only complacency will defeat us on Sunday. And Brendan doesn’t do complacency.

No matter how young or old one views the huntity playing out of Iborcs the fact is our players will see it as a big game, bigger than other league matches, and will rise to the occasion.I’d say Kieran,Broonie,Stuart,Scott and Moussa are all ‘big game’ players, and the rest are capable of more than ample assistance.I have every confidence in Brendan and whatever 11 start in those beautiful hoops.

    COYBIG

  9. I think Brendan will have the Hoops well and truly primed for noon on Sunday. Our preparation: mental, physical and tactical will be spot on.

Using one of BR’s favourite words, I expect us to be ‘relentless’.

Almost inconceivable, therefore, that we will not win.

Maybe by a narrow margin of goals, but win we will …

  10. I don’t believe complacency will be a factor on Sunday. BR has created an atmosphere of competition at Celtic. Competition from within. No players place is guaranteed and everyone of them knows a drop in form will see them replaced til they prove themselves worthy to regain that place.

Its a good place to be.

A long shot: does anyone know where in Fort Cochin, Kerela I could watch the game on Sunday.

  12. Watched a fair bit of TG’s funeral on the Celtic YouTube channel. Sound was delayed but some very eloquent tributes to the big man.

    RIP Tommy Gemmell

Long shot indeed – had a quick search and apparently the Holiday Inn in Cochin has a sports bar called Stadia:

Beautiful post by ACGR earlier, well said comrade.

  21. RIP Tommy, A legend amongst legends.

Looking ahead to Sunday, and reading the posts so far, you’d think we we were playing Rangers rather than newco. Would anyone be nervous about a visit from any other team in the league at the moment? If any of our players get overawed by facing this team then they have fallen hook, line and sinker for the hype rather than the reality. The MSM are trying to build up a game that means nothing in the grand scheme of things. They are a poor team who will gift us loads of chances – the result will depend on whether Dembele and co. put their boots on the right feet.

They will not attack us like in the first half hour of the last game. Smith is advising them so expect 10 men behing the ball. If they escape with a 1 or 2 goal defeat they will be delighted.

  22. Nearly, Brendan.

“Rodgers talks of Sevco’s 55 in 5 ‘propaganda’.”

    *****

The word you were looking for is ‘nonsense’.

The title of the article is misleading in itself, as it suggests that Brendan said much more than he actually did about the true situation regarding Sevco.

He was addressing their stated pre-season ambition as regards winning the league.

Close, but no cigar. Had me going for a bit, though!
