Superior fitness and mental fortitude will deliver for Celtic

1174

Having pummelled Newco repeatedly this season there is a notion that we’re going to do it again on Sunday. I’d be tempted to hold that result. St Mirren, an inferior team, demonstrated for 57 minutes how far blanket defending and a bit of organisation can take you. If Celtic record an impressive result at the weekend, they will have to be at the peak of their powers.

We can expect Newco will have watched replays of the opening 20 minutes of our Hogmanay tie dozens of times recently. They will do their best to capture what worked for them during that period, and attempt to replicate it on Sunday.

We started slowly that day, which is not entirely out of character, but one or two also looked spooked by the occasion. Newco started on the front foot, again, something they repeatedly do, but just as they have done throughout the season, they soon ran out of steam.

There is not a great deal they will be able to do about Moussa Dembele, short of cutting off supply to him. As a consequence, they will stick tight to Scott Sinclair, who will have work to do to even get involved in the game, never mind hurt the opposition. This is no bad thing, as while Scott is our most productive player, the team will be full of players hungry and capable of hurting the Newco defence.

This is a game which could be in the balance with 15 minutes remaining, but which Celtic could score three times in the closing period. They have the superior fitness and mental fortitude.

Our greatest danger will be from officialdom. Conceding a penalty, a red card, or both, opens the only door possible for Newco to take anything from the game. Keep cool heads as we’ll do just fine.

    ‘GG @7:04pm,

    thanks for that.

My first huns game at CP, was April 1987. That Oweny Archdeacon goal game. Being in the jungle for the first time against them, was such a great feeling as a 16 year old. Then Choccy steps up with 2 pens, even tho one of the hun horde got onto the pitch and verbally accosted him before the 2nd, but he kept his cool. Followed up in that 2nd half Oweny pounces on the feck-up between Nicholl (If my memory serves corrcetly) and Woods, and cue bedlam.

    Tremedous stuff.

However that Lubo game at Mordor, is still my Fav game against them over there and indeed is in my top 3 of all-time huns games. Going there as Champs already and stuffing them with Henrik’s 50th to round it all off?? Happy Hoopy days indeed.

Looking forward to giving them another doing on Sunday.

    Gerryfaethebrig,

Nov ’88 I think that one was (although the bold terry scored a few for us against thems!) and we won 3-1, but could and should have been a few more that day. The Maestro ran them ragged that day…..not for the first time either. In fact I think he rattled one off the bar from around 30 yards that day too. Or Woods made some save from him at that distance……amazing how the grey matter loses things you thought at the time you could and would never forget!

Good stuff, I used to say birthdays are for the weans but as I get older I appreciate it more as in today there are plenty who would love their own to have at least another

Keep the food stuff coming I know I appreciate it along with the Celtic stuff and going to a game with your Bhoy that’s everything good about Paul’s blog

  13. Between a busy night tonight, Stations, being dragged round kitchen shops tomorrow and vigil Mass tomorrow, I am linking the last 4 goal win over the Tribute Act.

It marks the emergence of Moussa Dembele as a Hunskelper in Brendan’s first encounter against a zombie team.

It’s a wee big long but well worth the time spent.

  14. Don’t know if any of you have seen the Twitter exchange between Bet Victor and a punter. The punter bet Barca to qualify, Messi to score a penalty and Cavani to hit the woodwork at 125/1. Bet Victor initially refused to pay out, the reason, when Cavani hit the post the ball went out of play!! They claimed their rules meant the ball can only hit the woodwork if it comes back into play. To be fair they did relent and pay the guy after a bit of a furore.

You are correct, Terry did notch a few but the diving header at Celtic end was still my favourite own goal of all time, not many good strikers could find the postage stamp like our Tel……

Am still convinced they couldn’t afford Butcher, Woods, Wilkins, both of the Stevens, even worse when Trevor (who I loved at Everton) went to Marsaille and back, we don’t even know about 10% of their cheating :-)

  17. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Gerry , Butcher scored an even better headed own goal at Tannadice the following season.

Souness was unhappy with Tel . I faintly remember Souness went public with his criticism of Tel and triggered Butcher’s exit from Ibrox .

I hope you have a great day on both the family and football fronts this Sunday .

A sad day today , my thoughts are with Jim’s and Tommy’s families.

    Gerryfaethebrig,

it was a belter of a header mate. what a finish :-)

I mind that “nice one Terry” was not the only song we had for him around then.

The slightly less nice “its black its blue…” was one i partook off occasionally too.

Can I use “it was the 80’s” as an excuse?

    (sitter Hibs!!)

Ach Im a better man now…….maybe??Funny how those games bring out the best and worst in you.

    But thats for another night…..

  19. Watching the Hibs Dundee United match, a very scrappy affair. Pretty low on quality but full of endeavour all the same. A good crowd too. Scottish football would actually be quite competitive if we weren’t around.

  20. Dropped that Alan Pardew off at the Blytheswood this afternoon……..shoooooooooooooly not? (them ebt’s still gon ?)

I was actually going to mention Dallas will probably know what game and what time it was sung, then Dallas appears :-)

As for songs we probably should not have sung back then, I think Greame EBT Souness had spilt from his then wife (might still be) the whole of the jungle erupted in to the tune of Donald Wherers Your Troosers….. “Souness where yours wife gone” I am still a bit embarrassed about joining in but then I remember the basket tried to end George McCluskeys career….. Souness in my opinion was a coward

Dallas, cheers am off on Monday so catch you on Wednesday, was in before 9am today so bolted at 1pm, play the time police at their own game :-)

No worries I have endless streams of this shite.

Tomorrow is a big day, my parents diamond wedding lunch, providing they are okay with the rigours of the day.

This week has seen one of my school contemporaries and one of my 5 a side opponents pass away at a young age. One of the funerals is tomorrow also.

In the last two years , probably due to my own age, I have learned to enjoy things I previously endured. All part of accepting the passage of time and appreciation of other points of view. It has been enlightening.

    Take care.
