Support and paradoxical intent

594

I suppose it is inevitable, this far into a period of domination, that draws and defeats attract disproportionate criticism.  We are not used to defeats, recently we have not even been used to a season without a treble, so reactions to dropping five points in a week have few reference points.

In the social media era, players are not immune to what is being said about them, some of them no doubt reflecting on years of successful service behind them, who perhaps feel deserted when the call was made.

I know what you’re thinking, this is classic paradoxical intent.  We react to that which makes us anxious in a way that can only increase our anxiety.

Neil Lennon is dealing with the absence of Forrest, Edouard, Johnston, Jullien, Bitton, Elhamed and Barkas, and easing the return to fitness of Ajeti, Christie and Griffiths, while hurting at some painful results.

We travel to France tomorrow then back in the early hours of Friday before it all goes on the line, again, at Hampden on Sunday.  All while Aberdeen rest and prepare.  In these circumstances, this is a tough ask.  Tougher still without support, and I don’t mean supporters, I mean actual support.  This is a no-brainer time, circle the wagons and get back to doing what we always do.

Paul67’s article today will be manna to those who’ve had the deflector shields up to full maximum all season.

He would have been as well reducing it the following:

    In lenny we trust, HWG10IAR

  2. Does anyone else think McCrorie should have been red-carded for his “tackle” on Frimpong ?

  3. I wish we werent involved in Europe at this time…With the threat of Covid, our poor form and the travelling itself.

As I have said before…for me this season its ALL about The MAGICAL 10 !

IF Broony does get “Cited”, I would hope that Celtic would strongly protest and ask why Fat Ugly Kid Moeles wasnt cited for slapping Scott Brown ?

Of course it should NOT take any Celtic player to be cited in order for an opposition guy to receive the very same punishment…after all this is The Huns we are talking about…different rulers etc !

It pisses me right aff .

  4. Kite flying season?

If our players need noise from our fans to beat Aberdeen it implies that we’re not good enough otherwise.

Let’s all do the Huddle is correct – we’ve squeaked out narrow wins against SPFL sides & looked unconvincing in the process. The feeling some of us have is not based on one result or two results or even the last 3. None of those performances have been adequate for a team aspiring to win our win domestic league. We can comfort ourselves that for 30 minutes against AC Milan we looked at best competitive but even that’s a stretch. They played within themselves & when they need to they scored a third goal with ease.

No one is not supporting the team of the manager & no one wants us to lose or draw any games.

Saying nice things that are false to make manager & players feel better. Is that it?

Not saying what we all see clearly with our own eyes in the hope that players our managers will use that to find the resources to be more confident, more tactically astute & more determined to win games. Is that it?

Making excuses for poor performances AND damaging results so that players & manager don’t feel bad over their part in them. Is that it?

The only people who can deliver are the manager, coaches & players. If they need me to publicly lie so that I say nonsense about them just so that they can pretend to feel better about themselves then they & we are more deluded than the doctor has suggested.

FFS these are professionals doing a job of work – next time you screw up at work ask the boss to accept your excuses & lies because your performance can only really improve if you feel that you’re not being held responsible for your failures & you’re feeling fragile.

Denial is no place to start a recovery.

Paul, anxiety increases when open discussion about what has gone wrong is denied or ridiculed.

  6. Paul writes an article about supporting our team and it draws a response like this:

    “RODDYBHOY on 27TH OCTOBER 2020 1:30 PM

Straight from big pistol petes mouth. Paul we are being systematically being downsised. Why are you doing PLs dirty work”

  7. ….and thsi:

” LETS ALL DO THE HUDDLE on 27TH OCTOBER 2020 2:09 PM

that first paragraph by P67 is just bollocks

the point is that barring probably only 1 game, we have been shit all season”

  8. Back in the good auld days whenever I wasnt too hot that day…I ALWAYS blamed myself for playing badly and couldnt wait for the next game to try and redeem myself.

I honestly dont remember ever blaming my Managers/Coaches if I had played badly.

I DID have strong “debates” sometimes with some of my managers….. if I was sent aff….but thats a different story !

  12. While certainly not up with the illustrious names mentioned… Pleased to be back…. For a while……. Speaking of illustrious names. What about… Philip Cocu??…. I seem to remember him getting big licks on here…. Tactically astute… Apparently… Mmm…

  13. I agree that the rallying cries to get behind the manager are coming from Peter Lawwell. I’ve tried to back off over the last week from my position of wanting a new manager to be appointed. However, I find that in the face of the evidence and a growing campaign to ignore it, I just can’t.

Many fans were opposed to Neil’s permanent appointment. We were grateful for him securing the League title and delivering the Scottish Cup. My feeling is that he should have been given a huge financial bonus and thanked for his achievement but not appointed permanently.

We didn’t have to wait too long for the first evidence to emerge that it was a wrong appointment. Cluj, at Parkhead, where we managed to squander a winning position on 3 occasions. We lost the chance to earn £25-35m CL money.

Later in the season we did something similar versus Copenhagen. At Parkhead too. Again in front of a packed stadium.

Move on to this season. A farcical performance against Ferencvaros in the CL qualifiers where we had strikers on the bench but none on the pitch caused yet another European exit on our home pitch and the chance to compete further for CL £millions.

That’s the position regarding Europe. At home, Rangers have become our closest rivals. Our ability to beat them has diminished in recent times and we have been totally outplayed in four of our last five outings. There is now a real and present danger that they will beat us to the League title. At Pittodrie, on Sunday, I felt absolutely jubilant at our comeback. In that second half our attack was back to its best. Tom Rogic showing what a brilliant footballer he is by setting up two goals and helping us to come from behind to take the lead. We just needed to hold out for those last remaining minutes and we would have gained a confidence giving 3 points at a very difficult venue against very tough opponents. The lad Wright was playing really well for them and going past Celtic defenders with ease. Cosgrove too had his tail up. People can say what they like about him but he is a much better player than he is given credit for. So how to hang on to this lead? The traditional method is to bring on another defender and make life more difficult for your opponent but Neil brought on a midfielder who is more of a creative player than defensive. Aberdeen tie up the game minutes later.

People say that it’s crazy to change manager at this juncture, that Lenny should be given the chance to sort it out and lead us to the title.

Why? There is plenty of evidence that I have listed above: repeated failure in Europe, appalling performances against Rangers. In my view change could have been made after any one of the following games: Cluj, Rangers 1-2, Copenhagen and Ferencvaros. I exempt the manager for the recent loss to Rangers. I doubt if Pep or Klopp could have won that game with 6 players missing who would likely have started the game.

I don’t hope that Celtic will lose any game in the near or distant future to further underline my point. I want us to win every game we play but the evidence is being ignored, we’re being told to shut up, close ranks and get behind the team while the team limps on, haemorrhaging points along the way. At what point does Peter Lawwell decide enough is enough? If we lose another game it makes the task of recovering the situation even more difficult for a new manager.

Next season, if we have failed to find an answer to Covid and crowds are still not permitted inside stadia, Paul will be asking us to back the Club and back the team by renewing our season ticket yet again.

For many, the dealbreaker will not be if they are allowed into the stadium to watch games or not. It will be, “is Neil Lennon still the manager?”

  14. “Shit all season “.5-1 against HMilton,5-1 against Ross County,3-0 against M,well,3-0 against Hibs. All before we lost half of our team.

Wasting your time on some on here Paul. You will notice the ones that are demanding we win every game,or the toys will be getting papped, out the pram, and a hundred yards doon the road, are the same ones demanding we take this farce of a Europa League this season, seriously, and we should be aiming higher than trebles and the 10.No account taken of our absentee players. No excuses,Lennon. We are spoilt bassas, and we demand.

    “Faithfull through and through”.My ass.

Another article, another list of, in essence, fluff.

I suppose it is inevitable, this far into a period of domination, that draws and defeats attract disproportionate criticism. We are not used to defeats, recently we have not even been used to a season without a treble, so reactions to dropping five points in a week have few reference points.

No – people aren’t bent out of shape at dropping points. Were there any calls for the sainted Brendan’s head when we were cuffed by Barca or PSG? Nope. Wha you’ve done is take the *legitimate* concerns of people posting on here and reduced them to shallow entitlement. Let’s be clear – the dropped points are the symptom, not the issue. And the issue is that the team has been dreadful this season.

And a squad that should be out of sight is behind the curve. What you’ve said is ‘The squad players aren’t as good as the first team’ – isn’t that an issue? If they’re not good enough, why spend multi millions on them? Isn’t that a problem with management? Are we used to trebes? Kind of. But the problem isn’t that – the problem is that Rangers have destroyed us on the last 3 occassions they’ve played us. They’ve looked comfortably better.

THe same thing happened with Celtic in the Advocaat era ‘how did they win when we were so much beter’… And Rangers were in the same position we are now. They *persumed* superiority. And that’s where we’re at. You’re assuming because we’ve been better that it’ll continue. It won’t. Nothing stands still.

FInally – it’s a bit of a joke that you’ve proclaimed Shane Duffy a failure because of three poor matches and yet we can’t look at the evidence with the coaching staff and decide it’s all going south without being malcontents? Consider me perplexed Paul67. Anyone else might think you’ve simply found a scapegoat. If there were real issues, how would CQN continue its Pravda-esque tendancies?

In the social media era, players are not immune to what is being said about them, some of them no doubt reflecting on years of successful service behind them, who perhaps feel deserted when the call was made.

So…. no one should debate on CQN? I wonder how the add revenue will go if that happens? Honestly, it’s not the case. Scott Brown is not feeling down because someone said something unkind on CQN. Again though I’ll return to my earlier question – if we should have faith that it’ll all be ok because ‘Neil has done it all before’, let’s get Kenny Dalglish resigned and back in the hoops. Pele is unsigned too, sign him up!

I know what you’re thinking, this is classic paradoxical intent. We react to that which makes us anxious in a way that can only increase our anxiety.

Or translated ‘If you’re nervous, you’re just hysterical! It’s all fine!’. Don’t you think that’s fairly patronising? And intellectually dishonest.

Neil Lennon is dealing with the absence of Forrest, Edouard, Johnston, Jullien, Bitton, Elhamed and Barkas, and easing the return to fitness of Ajeti, Christie and Griffiths, while hurting at some painful results.

Why did we bother with an expensively assembed squad if they’re not up to the job? We could just stick reserves into the team in their place? Moreover, Griffiths is missing though whos fault? Him coming back from Corona virus out of shape is both a poke in the eye to the fans and an absolute faulure of the clubs monitoring of players – which we were told was first class, best in the business.

All in – if you think players are crying because we think it’s all going wrong , you’ve never been around footballers. Getting shouted at during games is a different kettle of fish, and baiting players on twitter can only be condemned in the most vociferous of terms, but voicing concerns because we’ve been rubbish? Nah, not so much.

    Who’s fooling who here Paul?

We are not used to defeats, recently we have not even been used to a season without a treble, so reactions to dropping five points in a week have few reference points.”

Paul67 just for a second I felt guilty about my thoughts and opinions – then I realised

Nothing to do with dropping 5 points in 2 games

It’s also got nothing to do with assuming the treble is expected

It’s got everything to do with how we have been playing since the start of the season

Its to do with Ferencvaros, its to do with getting out of jail at Dundee and Perth, its to do with being a nervous wreck when Livingstone nearly equalised in the last minute, its to do with not getting a shot at goal against the Huns, its to do with goals conceded, its to do with changed formations every game, it’s to do with a lack of confidence, its to do with conceding a penalty in the 90th minute on Sunday, its to do with a basic understanding that we are not playing well, its to do with not hoping everything will turn out OK.

It’s not the players we have the best squad in Scotland by a mile

I am not qualified (like all on here) to lecture anyone on tactics, formation, player selection or how to manage Celtic

But not recognising that we have a problem – is a problem

If you don’t change anything nothing changes

It could well be that behind the scene much is being done to change things

That could mean changing the manager it could mean helping the manager

    I have no idea

And please do not think this is a NL out piece

I have great respect for NL and everything he has done for Celtic

But he needs help, Gavin Strachan and John Kennedy are not enough

Help can be a number of things

    a) Relieving him of the job and the pressure of 10

    b) Promoting Scott brown

    c) Bringing in somebody to help him

As a Club we have isolated him I am not sure (apart from those close to him) anybody understand what is going on with him

At the moment PL could be criticized for throwing him under the bus – I gave you the job I got you the players

And in fairness to PL that’s true – but its not working at the moment

So I personally (like all on here) have an opinion and my opinion is simple

Something is wrong we need to do something

Now some on here will have a view that we will turn a corner and all will be well – you have no idea how hard I pray that you are right – I hope to God that you are praying just as hard that I am wrong

Honest question – if the six players brought in suggests Lennon was backed but Lennon can’t be criticised, why do you think we’ve been so poor all season?

The players out won’t wash because most, if not all have played this season – and poorly, while the players we have on the park have been playing well within themselves.

  24. Neil opened fire on the rags,2 had polls asking if he should be sacked, shameful. Easy answer Neil and Peter, ban them, simples.

  25. The whole season long we have been disrupted with injuries to key players, Covid 19 absentees, and playing catch up due to Bolingoli being an idiot. Neil Lennon has won everything possible to win in Scotland up to this point, in his 2nd spell and has been massively funded by the board in the summer to fill gaps in the inherited BR squad. He was allowed to keep all his star players despite the naysayers, and a mere pandemic.

If you’re posting to have him sacked, you are in line with the growing number of Daily Dafty panic merchants, blind to these realities and who can’t handle Sevco being top of the league for a while?
