Supporting your ex, hurting the one you love, ballsy Ashley

892

I’ve plenty of sympathy for Niall McGinn for coming under pressure after being spotted at the Kilmarnock-Celtic game on Monday, but not in any way distressed.  Players watch former clubs all the time, it’s not even remotely an issue, but Niall is experiencing the cost of playing in a team at the top of the league.  Aberdeen fans would neither notice nor care where he was on Monday if they were in their usual mid-table spot.

A taste of internecine strife does more damage than any external party could ever hope to inflict.  Glad to hear it’s taken route at our nearest rivals.  On a similar note…….

A serious bid to bring newco Rangers to its knees got into full swing yesterday, as thousands of ‘fans’ signed up to spend not a penny more with the club, while mock-Rangers jerseys (should that be mock-mock-Rangers?), sold by fans’ groups, were profiled in the media.

If you know your history, 20 years ago a group of Celtic fans, some working on the frontline, some working behind the scenes, orchestrated the Celts for Change campaign, which ultimately brought regime change at Celtic.

Celts for Change had two fundamental factors in their favour: people with access to the money required to resolve the club’s problems were among them, while those running Celtic did not have access to significant funds, personal or otherwise.

The lessons of Celts for Change is that before you hurt the club you love: make sure you are capable of laying a glove on those you are trying to damage, and when you bring things to a head, ensure you have the money to put things right.  In newco’s case this will be many tens of millions.

I backed Celts for Change and I wholeheartedly back those who are trying to bring down newco.  Their plans and foresight are exceptional.

Care to guess which Scottish club has been most active in the transfer market this month?  Falkirk, who have signed their fifth player.  They have won six of their last seven games and are now within a win of getting into a play-off spot.  Hot tip for the play-offs: Falkirk, Hibs, Queen of the South and Ross County.

What about Mike Ashley yesterday appointing Duff & Phelps as administrators to one of his companies?  Just in case you think he’s not ballsy.

So what’s the long term goal for those advocating the Evans fella be hounded away from work, will it stop when he dies?

People have every right to object to a convicted rapist being employed by a football club. God knows this place would go into meltdown if he was linked with us.

If he was a convicted paedophile, out on licence, having shown no remorse for his victim, and having a disgraceful website set up to discredit his victim, would you still be advocating he should be allowed to return to football?

For many people, the paedophiles are the lowest of the low in society. For many of those same people, rapists are not far behind.

stairheedrammy – the Ched Evans case is one of the strangest outbreaks of moral panic I’ve ever seen.

We expect footballers to be moral paladins do we? Since when?

Also, on the facts of the case, he should never have been convicted of rape. The decision to jail him and let his fellow accused go free was absurd. (thumbsup)

    —————

The facts are that a jury found that the sex between the fellow accused and the victim was consensual, and the sex between Evans and the victim was not. Just because a drunk girl goes back to a hotel with a man for sex, doesn’t mean she consents to another man arriving later to join in.

    #####

    Not entirely.

It all hinges on the matter of consent.

The rationale is that the other accused had reasonable grounds for believing the ‘victim’ consented (she approached him in the street and went back to his hotel) whereas Evans arrived later at the invitation of the co accused rather than the ‘victim’.

That’s not to say there aren’t legitimate concerns about the case

I thought I understood that once you have completed your prison sentence in the UK we consider the person is entitled to take his place in society. That does not mean we condone the crime so saying a person showed no remorse is not a legal stipulation that allows society to further punish the person. If Chad Evans is debarred from working he will have to fall back on benefits and the tax payer will have to pay towards the benefits this makes no sense when the person can work and wants to work and could be contributing through his payment of tax to the welfare state instead of taking money out of the welfare system. However, this is my opinion but I understand others who see it differently.H.H.

Father takes son to game to see team his son supports. He attends with another father and son who is a personal friend.

This is NORMAL human behaviour. The only slight difference is that in this case the 2 fathers happen to be professional football players.

Should Niall McGinn deny his son the opportunity to watch the team he (the son) supports because of his profession?

    Ludicrous nonsense.

If Scott Brown’s boy supported sevco and he took him to watch at rustyville along with say Stephen Whittaker a friend I would have no objections. Might question the boy’s sanity though!

ernie lynch – I stand correctified. I thought the question of consent in this case hinged on intoxication.

That’s not to say there aren’t legitimate concerns about the case

    Yes.

If Ched Evans had been lurking in some bushes, and dragged off an unsuspecting spinster for rapey purposes, that would clearly make him a rapist.

    But that’s not what happened.

There is no way it should have been determined, beyond all reasonable doubt, that he raped that girl.

I think the jury just decided that somebody was going down for rape, and split the difference. (thumbsup)

  14. If Evans was a better player I’m sure he would have a club by now. The treatment of him is a disgrace.

  15. The Honest Cover-up on

Was probably discussed yesterday on the blog but in the wake of the terrible attacks in Paris yesterday there has been a lot of talk from European leaders about the improtance of defending the right of free speech and to cause offence. It would be interesting to hear the SNP leadership’s thoughts on this given the OFB Act.

I’m not attempting to disrepect the French victims and I realise that being put in a cell and being shot are two very different things but I think it highlights the absurdity of this legislation.

I read also that it is now an offence in Scotland to tweet jokes about tragic events. Our right to free speech is being eroded away before our eyes.

Philvis mentioned the moral panic being generated in relation to this case and you present a good example of it with the (probably unconscious) attempt to associate it with paedophilia. There is no connection. My view is that once you have paid for your crime, you have paid for it. I dont agree that we should hound people for the rest of their days

I think the boys pictured were someone else’s sons who asked for their photo to be taken. Stokes became a Dad for the first time a few months ago I think.

Agree it is a non-story though. McGinn’s application in matches against Celtic previously is beyond doubt. He would love nothing more than to score the goal for Aberdeen which clinched the league against the team who rejected him (won’t happen though!)

  21. Phyllis Dietrichson on

Luke McCormick, the Plymouth Argyle goalkeeper, caused a car crash which killed two children, aged eight and ten, in 2008. He was found guilty on two counts – of causing death by dangerous driving nd driving with excess alcohol – and was sentenced to seven years.

He was released in 2012 and re-signed for Plymuth Argyle in 2013.

In July 2014 he was made club captain.

If they have got it wrong he will win an appeal. Until then, no matter what philvisreturns thinks, he is a convicted rapist, and if he wants to return to a high profile profession like football, then he and any prospective employers deserve the kind of widespread hostility they are currently receiving.

  23. Isn’t technology wonderful? I log into CQN and up comes an advert for a hotel in Germany I booked a few days earlier and also an advert for a ferry company that I had looked at online with a view to getting my car over to Holland.

jimtim.13.40 I have to agree and to me all the nonsense about the player taking his son to watch Celtic just shows once again how narrow minded this wee country of ours is.I wonder if it had been a Rangers player say Chris Boyd that had been at the game watching Kilmarnock if anything would have been said about it ?
