Supporting your ex, hurting the one you love, ballsy Ashley

892

I’ve plenty of sympathy for Niall McGinn for coming under pressure after being spotted at the Kilmarnock-Celtic game on Monday, but not in any way distressed.  Players watch former clubs all the time, it’s not even remotely an issue, but Niall is experiencing the cost of playing in a team at the top of the league.  Aberdeen fans would neither notice nor care where he was on Monday if they were in their usual mid-table spot.

A taste of internecine strife does more damage than any external party could ever hope to inflict.  Glad to hear it’s taken route at our nearest rivals.  On a similar note…….

A serious bid to bring newco Rangers to its knees got into full swing yesterday, as thousands of ‘fans’ signed up to spend not a penny more with the club, while mock-Rangers jerseys (should that be mock-mock-Rangers?), sold by fans’ groups, were profiled in the media.

If you know your history, 20 years ago a group of Celtic fans, some working on the frontline, some working behind the scenes, orchestrated the Celts for Change campaign, which ultimately brought regime change at Celtic.

Celts for Change had two fundamental factors in their favour: people with access to the money required to resolve the club’s problems were among them, while those running Celtic did not have access to significant funds, personal or otherwise.

The lessons of Celts for Change is that before you hurt the club you love: make sure you are capable of laying a glove on those you are trying to damage, and when you bring things to a head, ensure you have the money to put things right.  In newco’s case this will be many tens of millions.

I backed Celts for Change and I wholeheartedly back those who are trying to bring down newco.  Their plans and foresight are exceptional.

Care to guess which Scottish club has been most active in the transfer market this month?  Falkirk, who have signed their fifth player.  They have won six of their last seven games and are now within a win of getting into a play-off spot.  Hot tip for the play-offs: Falkirk, Hibs, Queen of the South and Ross County.

What about Mike Ashley yesterday appointing Duff & Phelps as administrators to one of his companies?  Just in case you think he’s not ballsy.

  1. I have no objections to convicted rapists who have served their time returning to their previous well paid jobs.

Philvis mentioned the moral panic being generated in relation to this case and you present a good example of it with the (probably unconscious) attempt to associate it with paedophilia. There is no connection. My view is that once you have paid for your crime, you have paid for it. I dont agree that we should hound people for the rest of their days

    ————–

    If you believe

“once you have paid for your crime, you have paid for it”

then that’s absolutely fine, but you have to be consistent, and you would have to apply the same logic to someone convicted of paedophilia, as long as they have paid for their crime.

If you agree with that then I admire your belief in rehabilitation, but I’m not as tolerant, and in my opinion, some crimes you cannot escape from.

  4. Regarding the press witch hunt against Niall McGinn, ….

a little tale from past few weeks that shows what we are up against and how they work.

John Guidetti scored a lot of goals (once he was up and running) 11 goals.

    We all loved him.

“Sign him up , pay the money Peter ,whatever it takes get him signed etc”.

On 30th November we played Hearts in the Cup on a soft heavy pitch.

Players were slipping all over the place.

Big John slipped and we got a penalty, it was a soft penalty , but was never a dive.

Guidetti took the penalty and scored.

The next 4 days saw the Laptop Loyal casting JG as a villain, trying to have him referred to disciplinary panel for diving.

( even after it was confirmed that no action would be taken they continued on Shortbread and Clyde for a few days more dragging his reputation through the mud)

Guidetti hasn’t scored a goal since.

A lot of support for the player has since waned.

“He not worth the money , why would we sign him he’s a dud.etc ”

Big round of applause to the Laptop Loyal , playing us like a fish.

Justice is miscarried more often than we know, and it would be foolish to consider the verdict in any given disputed case to be beyond question.

That said, Evans’ case has been reviewed, and the panel confirmed that the jury was permitted to come to the verdict arrive at.

The case touches on an altogether more difficult topic, a dirty secret in football:

Our football clubs take in boys at 11 years old, and within 10 years have turned a hugely disproportionate number of them into sexual predators.

But we don’t talk about that, do we. They’re our heroes, and this is our sport.

The Ched Evans ‘rehabilitation’ debate is somewhat blinkered in this respect. What Evans did – what he admitted to doing – is actually common or garden leisure time for many. Rather than discuss the behaviour, we focus on the conviction, which simply promotes the view inside football: Don’t get caught.

    Pretty sordid in my view.

    Happy New Year btw

  11. As far as I’m aware Evans did appeal and was still deemed guilty.

He has now lodged a further appeal, this Will be based on new evidence not previously seen by the jury. He is only half way through his sentence and currently is out on licence.

  12. I had the misfortune to be on jury duty a few years ago concerning a murder case.Wont go into the facts, but 3-4 of my fellow jurors were a tad above moron intelligence.

Not saying thats the case in the Evans case, but never, never, think because a jury finds one way,or another, its always the truth.

    Yes.

And as you say, it is sordid.

And it seems to be rife among footballers these days.

Without wishing to be a prude, I find their taste for multiple participants in what should be a private matter to be equal parts baffling and boak-inducing.

But it wouldn’t happen if there weren’t so many young women willing to engage in those activities so they can “bag” a footballer (or footballers).

Interesting to note, the girl in this case didn’t consider herself a rape victim till the police talked her into it. She phoned the cops to report a missing handbag.

Well, what was she going to say to an authority figure after she sobered up? “Oh no! I really enjoy that sort of thing…”

So I don’t just blame the footballers. (thumbsup)

  16. Turkeybhoy.

That was my experience of jury duty too.

I was on an attempted murder case. The jury was split, one woman actually said look gonna just find him guilty, I cannae be bothered coming back again tomorrow, it’s Friday and I want to start my weekend, another said if we didnae hurry up she would be late for her man’s tea. Apathy ruled the day. I have never been on jury service since and don’t want to be either.

  17. John de bomber of Govan scored the single goal winner twice and also scored a hat trick for 10 man Dundee against Rangers. Not overlooking one Charlie Nicholas lashing home a penalty in the shoot out after a Scottish Cup Final against Celtic when he’d already agreed to sign for Celtic for the next season! What a shocker! man takes son to football game while at the same game his managers no doubt was earning a few bob from Sky.

Yes but people are allowed to revise their opinion of a player based on what happens on the pitch, it just so happens Guidetti took a real dip in form and when money is tight, it is inevitable that some are going to question whether the right thing to do is spend a few million and make him one of our highest earners.

He had a bit of a nightmare at Motherwell which, ironically, came after he had a great goal incorrectly chopped off.

More widely, the incidence of sexual offences amongst footballers, when compared to the prevailing rate in wider society, is dumbfounding and alarming in equal measure.

Are we to extend your point of view and conclude that the problem is not actually one of incidence of errant sexual behaviour on the part of young footballers, but is in fact bound up in the retrospective remorse of these numerous football-bagging harlots?
