Sustainable, successful, team development

799

There are several parts of Tuesday’s performance which could be improved upon, parts which will be exposed by the rigours of Champions League football, but we looked like an experienced European team, one who could go away from home, roll with the early season uncertainties, but still have enough in the tank to win comfortably.

For the last couple of years we have watched a team mature while Neil Lennon has continued to add young blood to the squad.  Fraser Forster has become an adept shot-stopper, puncher and kicker-with-both-feet.  Joe Ledley has developed into a disciplined anchor in midfield while Adam Matthews, Victor Wanyama and Beram Kayal have progressed even quicker than I am sure the manager expected.

Last season’s Europa League campaign contributed significantly to the development.  The team seemed to grow a few inches during the home win over Rennes, which propelled them onto the league title.  A Champions League examination will present no fears but will expedite progress.

We could be on the verge of the first sustainable, successful, team development plan in 40 years, one that delivers titles, significant progress in Europe and lives within its means.

Not sure that Airdrie United claim Clydebank’s history but Airdrionians were liquidated Clydebank weren’t.

Airdrie United have no claim on Airdrionians History, i.e. If they win a Cup they can’t add it to Airdrionians tally.

Airdrionians History Froze when they were liquidated.

Likewise Rangers F.C.’s History will Freeze when the are liquidated.

The RFFF can lock it in Amber or fund a Museum, what no Club, Organisation or Individual can do is add to Rangers Fooball Club’s History.

  2. How much did Mulgrew, Matthews, Kayal, Izaguirre, Wanayama, Ledley, Forrest to name a few, cost?

Sheesh, we got half the present team for virtually nothing.

  3. From Garngad to Croy I am Neil Lennon. on

Has anyone received a letter from Celtic with Regards to charges for the opt out tickets for the Dundee game ? My son has an opt-out ticket.

I was led to believe that people who had bought the opt out tickets prior to Rangers 1872 demise would receive a loyalty bonus of the Dundee games for free.

Also has anyone claimed the voucher that was supposedly on offer to people who had bought a full ticket ? I personally did not claim the voucher for my full ticket as I felt it was punishing Celtic for Rangers wrong doing. I am now tempted to claim the voucher and use it to purchase the Dundee tickets for my son.

  4. If…..and it’s an almost unthinkable ‘if’………we didn’t prevail next Weds. it would be a catastrophe on an apocalyptic level. To squander a 2 goal away leg advantage would be nigh on unforgiveable, and much though we are not of the ‘entitlement’ persuasion, I cannot conceive of such an outcome at Celtic Park. I’m not being arrogant, just confident of our ability to make this final hurdle. And having achieved this I would expect funding to seriously bolster our squad in order to wholeheartedly compete at home and abroad.

I’d think we’d be entitled to that.

‘The marginal difference between our bid and what Hibs wanted was what we were not willing to risk’

Not entirely true. Petrie told Celtic the price for Fletcher on the morning of the last day of the window and that Hibs would not budge on that fee (£3m). Ask anyone who has dealt with Petrie and they will tell you he won’t accept less than the price he quotes you. Our negotiator knew this full well having purchased SB 2 years previously. Somebody at the club decided to play silly beggars and offer well less than the asking price. A 2nd bid was made involving players which was rejected as Hibs only wanted the cash. When a 3rd bid was made which was unacceptable, Petrie got so peed off with Celtic he called a halt to the whole charade

  10. I think some on here, are getting ahead of themselves, thinking that we can afford to drop points at this stage of the season.

Looking at the performances of Dundee United,I wouldn’t want them to get 6/9 points ahead of us.Get three points at Inverness IMO is paramount.

The point you make about Rangers history is the important one: their history will always be there but it cannot be added to.

Some weeks ago someone put it brilliantly, I can remember the exact way it was put but along the lines of…..my Granny lived her life and the history of her life will always be there, no-one can change the history of my Granny’s life or erase it. But my Granny died, her life ended. There is a woman livinf in my Granny’s old house….but she is not my Granny.

It was better written than that but you get the gist (or is it jist?).

“Airdrie United have no claim on Airdrionians History, i.e. If they win a Cup they can’t add it to Airdrionians tally.”

Agreed, as they did not purchase / transfer the Airdrionians membership. They did purchase Clydebank F.C. and transfer the membership and the SFL appear to see Airdrie Utd. as the continuation of Clydebank F.C. under a different name as witnessed by the Date Founded and Achievements listed under Airdrie Utd – the date founded shows 1965 which is when Clydebank were registered with the SFA.

“Airdrionians History Froze when they were liquidated.”

Indeed but my concern is that it froze because the SFA membership terminated at that time as it was not transferred?

“Likewise Rangers F.C.’s History will Freeze when the are liquidated.”

Only if there is no precedent for that history being attached to an SFA membership – which it looks to me like their may be?

I’m thinking two things based on your article.

    1. Arsene Wenger must wish Arsenal were in our situation. They are pursuing the same kind of policy as Celtic but are screwed by the big borrowing spenders whom they share the league with. Arsenal must be hoping for a “Rangers Event” for one of their rivals (I think Man Utd will have problems keeping pace with Man City -could RVP be the financial equivalent of TA Flo?)so that Aresenal’s policy is an on field success as well as a business one.

The obvious answer is the EPL introduces its own version of UEFA FFP and polices it (not like the SFA who failed to) but it might take a Rangers Event to bring that about. God even here with such an event, lessons on unsustainable policies appear not to have been learned. Which takes me to point 2.

How far ahead of Sevco are Celtic in terms of running a proper business properly? The core business – football is based on a scouting and development plan that is starting to pay dividends and some of the CL money should go on widening and improving that scouting network. Its been a long time since I have seen so many potential first teamers in the younger squad so something right is being done there.

The Celtic model, on an appropriate scale according to crowd size, is what the rest of our game in Scotland needs to adopt and most teams are. I say most because the one that has not appears to be follow following the same fluid model to the same ultimate fluidity.

Your previous thread on Commons was bang on.

If we perform like we did for 35 mins in the first half again, against European opposition we will likely be heavily punished.

Whenever any of our better players reach potential they will be sold.

That is a key part of our business plan.

Aye. I think we both agree the potential is there. It is easy to forget how young the Celtic squad is.

I enjoyed watching the team progress in the Europa League last season – we improved game by game. Celtic have used that experience well in the Champions League qualifiers this season and we will learn much if we finish the job next week and reach the group stages.

We will continue our learning in the Champions League, and the challenge is to improve on that next season.

The mantra is to separate the club from the company. Green doesn’t give a toss whether it’s right or not or whether there is any history…… but he recognises that this ‘image’ is vital to sales and income so he’s running with it.

We should all be resisting the ‘image’ by using the title ‘newclub’ or ‘sevclub’ or similar…….. losing the ‘co’ bit to emphasise the single (and therefore one dead) identities.

£50 for his opt-out season ticket. Very good value.

£17 for the first Dundee game alone if i want his seat for that game. Rather less value I would suggest. Doubt i’ll pay that. Had they said £10 a la the Helsingborg game I probably would have done so. I know that it’s only £7 a difference, but how can a run of the mill league game be valued at 70% greater than a Champions League final qualifying round game??

Perhaps the answer can be found in the transfer system for players?

When Henrik left all the medals etc he won with Celtic stayed as medals he won with Celtic. Say 20.

At Barcelona he wins say 3 medals. So Henrik has 23 medals on his history but that is because when he transferred Henrik was still the same Henrik with the same unique identifiers like date of birth, abilities etc as the one who played for us.

Now a club that is liquidated loses its date of birth equivalent – its company number and, as is obvious, its abilities in terms of it cannot perform to the same level as preceeding liquidation. It might look the same as Henrik looked the same after joining Barca but in terms of key identifiers it is an entirely different entity.

That does not stop the medals won as Rangers being part of Rangers history but that history ended when the key identifiers did. Like Henrik Sevco can transfer and win medals but unlike Henrik the medals tally at Rangers stops and the medals tally as Sevco starts, because a membership transfer does not make what was there before transfer being the same as what is there after transfer simply beacause the term being used is “transfer”. The right to be a member was preserved for business reasons, not all the key identifiers that belonged to the previous member. They remain there.

After Tuesday nights result I wonder if Ki is having 2nd thoughts? Swansea will be mid-table at best, although off to a good start. I am aware there will be a drop in income from domestic games but surely CL qualification will more than offset this.

Ki obviously relishes the prospect of playing EPL football to put himself in the shop window for yet another offer which might be more likely to gain him entry to Champion’s League football. He is certainly getting enough representative exposure which will do that prospect no harm either. In the meantime his income tax bill will rise but not by as much as his net income.

  35. Paul67 et al

We have 38 matches to win the SPL, and we have one game which will decide whether we participate in this season’s Champions League. No prizes for deciding which game we need to prioritise, if knocks, strains and sprains are factors. We are now in a post Old Firm scenario and it will take time to adjust to that, though a victory next Wednesday would show that we are more than capable of motivating ourselves. Progress is being made and will have been made if we qualify, over four games, into the Champions League itself. Sweden were in the Euros, Scotland weren’t so it will be no mean feat if we knock out the champions of a country ranked 10 by UEFA going into 2012. For those that watched the Helsinbourg match on ITV1 could not have helped but notice the exasperation of |Gordon Strachan with our tactics, even though they mirrored his own for much of the time at Celtic, ie a flat midfield four, though not one he used against AC Milan. Helsinbourg have stated they will continue to play attacking football next week, let us make sure it will be more difficult to do so, and punish them for trying!
