Sustainable, successful, team development

799

There are several parts of Tuesday’s performance which could be improved upon, parts which will be exposed by the rigours of Champions League football, but we looked like an experienced European team, one who could go away from home, roll with the early season uncertainties, but still have enough in the tank to win comfortably.

For the last couple of years we have watched a team mature while Neil Lennon has continued to add young blood to the squad.  Fraser Forster has become an adept shot-stopper, puncher and kicker-with-both-feet.  Joe Ledley has developed into a disciplined anchor in midfield while Adam Matthews, Victor Wanyama and Beram Kayal have progressed even quicker than I am sure the manager expected.

Last season’s Europa League campaign contributed significantly to the development.  The team seemed to grow a few inches during the home win over Rennes, which propelled them onto the league title.  A Champions League examination will present no fears but will expedite progress.

We could be on the verge of the first sustainable, successful, team development plan in 40 years, one that delivers titles, significant progress in Europe and lives within its means.

  1. The CL theme tune was a TV production….It was NOT the official Zadoc the Priest accompanying the ripple of the flag by the ball boys and girls.

I don’t know if any of the above is true….but it’s what I won a bet on off ma pal. So ssshhhh!!

    hail hail

  2. It’s not often that in the midst of anguish, pain, tears and a tourrette class volley of invective that an old joke springs to mind. But today it did with me!

It was just after I had posted the countdown to when I could partake of some Sharkeys’ medicine again. For anyone remotely interested (a group which is led by me and the Sharkeys’ bank manager) it is now….8 DAYS 20 HOURS 14 MINUTES 53 SECONDS and counting!

Anyway, a few mentioned their own abstinence periods followed by the subsequent euphoria of that first long, cool, refreshing, nutritional, restorative, heartwarming, inspiring PINT!

What they didn’t mention was the injury to the mysterious tendon that connects face and hamstring muscles that occurs frequently in those who have taken an albeit temporary vow of temperance!

At the moment I am in great pain as I can neither walk properly or remove the death contortion from my face. It was the diet that caused both. Vegetables, fruit, fish, fluids, vegetables, fruit, fish, fluids. None of them could counteract the loss of my daily RDA of 12 pints of beer and as i sat there looking at the singing fish I was faced with the prospect of trying to pass something that had changed, from the normal inconsequential whoosh of digestive waste, into eye of needle, camel (bactrian) and a family of saharan nomads.

Eye-poppingly Scarfe like I gave it my best simulation of a male giving birth …………. and twang went my hamstring, crack went my jaw and as I explained …..pain, tears and invective alerted the street to the fact that the the Loch Ness monster had been found in my toilet.

Anyway the old joke….Spock is found with his head stuck down Kirk’s pan on the Enterprise. “Whit are ye daein wae yer heid doon the cludgie?” asks Scottie……..

“Looking for the Captain’s log”….Replies Spock.

“Log?” I thought “LOG!!!!. I’ve just passed a giant redwood with a family of Sasquatch living in its branches”

The Captain must have been off the booze as well……even if his name was really William Shatner!

    Hail hail

I watched the STV coverage too but in company so could not hear too well. I don’t recall the big football canvass covering the centre circle before ko however, nor do I recall it being shoogled to the tune… which I couldn’t hear!

I ask because I can’t wait to hear it again on Wednesday, if it’s going to be played. It’s been too long.

A move for #Russell is not dependant on Champions League qual. #DundeeUtd are looking for ~£3m but #Celtic hope to pay closer to two million

I canny see Berbatov coming to Glasgow so that is probably made up gash but we can dream. I don’t think too many folk would be banging on about Rhodes if we got Berbatov.

Jonny Russell and 3M quid seems a bit steep but we could face a Steven Fletcher situation – look at what he went for now. I’d rather Celtic invested in a player like Russell and got rid of the dead wood. Maybe we could Offer 2M plus a player and a couple of loans. I rate the boy Russell and have a feeling he’d enhance Celtic.

Any decent signing now would give the club and the fans a wee lift, especially as we are already in the ascendency!

I know you were using a football analogy to explain why The Rangers (2012) isn’t Rangers (1873) …

Possibly posted here or else over on RTC, I came across a different analogy which tickled me: it used the example of a guy whose first wife dies and he subsequently re-marries

Try telling the new wife that she’s really just a continuation of the old wife and see how far it gets you … !

As you pointed out, I don’t know the exact workings of the Fletcher negotiations, but they obviously didn’t go to plan as we didn’t get the player.

It would appear that similar negotiations have taken place with Rosenberg over Markus Henriksen in that we asked the price then offered significantly lower than that amount. If that is the process in our transfer negotiations there is a danger that we will continue to miss out on players within our budget. Sadly we always seem to negotiate the bad signings ok, like Murphy and Juarez !

  16. Johnny Russell will cost no more than £2m. United can chance their arm but as soon as Celtic make their interest official they have an unsettled player on their hands. Goodwillie eventually went for £1.8m plus add ons last summer, i’d imagine Russell will go for something similar.

Berbatov? No ta, would rather see Tony Watt get a chance.

I agree with most of what you say – bet that makes you proud :-).

Anyway re The Arabs (was there once a team whose nickname was just Arabs?)

I think that they would go south and generate an offer that would be a step ahead of Celtic’s bid. That’s what they achieved with Goodwillie, Hibs did with Fletcher, Motherwell with McFadden, Hamilton with McCarthy etc.

Mind you the best ‘gazumping’ story was the one when Harry Harry Harry Hood was about to Join Celtic for the first time in 1964. He met up with Bob Kelly and was offered a contract which was fine apart from the wages.

When Harry objected, Kelly pointed out that while the money might not match what Sunderland were offering, playing for Celtic would surely compensate.

Harry pointed out that Celtic’s offer was actually less than Clyde were currently paying him.

Kelly refused to up the ante.

Harry of course eventually joined us in 1969 after returning for a spell at Clyde. Under Stein I don’t think Kelly had anything like the same power.

BTW …I THINK but Harry will go down in history as the last Celtic Player to score a hat-trick against Rangers.

cant see us signing any players other than works in progress.

  27. I see Norwich quoted as offering £5m + James Vaughan for Izzy! He had a great season where double figures were being quoted for him, however and i know its early days but he doesn’t look the same player since injury. I think its good money if it was used to bring in a quality CH and finance a CF.

Someone earlier mentioned us buying £4m players but I think the business model will work better in the up to £2m player so in ki’s case a 300% increase in value and his wages wouldn’t have been huge. However take Scott Brown he cost £4.4m and is on big wages how much would we get for him now? not much more is my opinion.

The balance of asset management versus quality on the park is hard to get but if we have cl football worth £17m, £6m ki, £5m saved on wages with 10+ players gone, £750k for Real & Ajax games =£28,750,000 then we can buy assets as and when they become available. With the carrott of cl football i’d hope we can attract a better quality player.

If we can get rid of Murphy, was looking at squad on sky website not much deadwood left now hopefully QUALITY over quantity and lessons learned!!!

Right, hopefully can put my fears to rest

Celtic Fc Plc own a football club Celtic Ltd, (Celtic FC Plc own the shares of Celtic Ltd, would be good to know how the Celtic Ltd are distributed)

Check your shares, are they for Celtic FC Plc or Celtic Ltd

If as I suspect they are for Celtic FC Plc, you dont have shares in Celtic Ltd, you are part of the consortium known as Celtic FC Plc.

Now, a majority Celtic FC Plc shareholding cabal, might decide to sell Celtic Ltd to another company, the history transfers

If Celtic FC Plc are in administration it is advisable to have permission from the creditors before selling Celtic Ltd, if permission is granted, the history transfers.

So from what I can make out using my analogy, corrupt fc were sold to a new company with the permission of a majority of shareholders, did the creditors also give permission, I’d have thought the liquidation notice meant no.
