Sustainable, successful, team development

799

There are several parts of Tuesday’s performance which could be improved upon, parts which will be exposed by the rigours of Champions League football, but we looked like an experienced European team, one who could go away from home, roll with the early season uncertainties, but still have enough in the tank to win comfortably.

For the last couple of years we have watched a team mature while Neil Lennon has continued to add young blood to the squad.  Fraser Forster has become an adept shot-stopper, puncher and kicker-with-both-feet.  Joe Ledley has developed into a disciplined anchor in midfield while Adam Matthews, Victor Wanyama and Beram Kayal have progressed even quicker than I am sure the manager expected.

Last season’s Europa League campaign contributed significantly to the development.  The team seemed to grow a few inches during the home win over Rennes, which propelled them onto the league title.  A Champions League examination will present no fears but will expedite progress.

We could be on the verge of the first sustainable, successful, team development plan in 40 years, one that delivers titles, significant progress in Europe and lives within its means.

  1. Clint Dempsey anyone, CL football as carrot what would that do for jersey sales and profile in the States?

Wonder what players are not in squads in England and up for loans?

  2. South of Tunis @ 15:28,

Yep, he was a product of Mrs T’s Britian and funded the Tories.

    Adam Matthews

20 odd minutes in,stuffs up on the halfway line.

From 10 metres behind the runner, manages to catch up and block the shot, without tackling from behind.

    Commitment.

Makes you wonder how fast he could do the 100 metres in- wish he would use that speed more often to get to the by-line. Sometimes I think he needs a shot of confidence. With all the ability and natural speed you would think he would believe in himself a bit more.

  4. See this transfer window, just what type of window is it ,sash, tilt n turn or casement I think we have a right to know. And would a decent centre forward fit through it.

  5. I heard two Orcs in the pub the other day arguing whether or not you would sail off the end of the world when you got there…they ended up coming to blows. Very ugly.

  7. ITV coverage also cut off the CL music, disappointing I was up for singing it out loud with my hand in my heart!

    Clint Dempsey ?

Italian transfer rumor mongers have him going to Liverpool for £ 5 million plus Charlie Adam

  9. BookerT

The tav is my local and I can be found very easily in there, hope we can meet up for a beer, friends with the owners and well, loadsa folk there! Yip moved to the old college, used to work there a long time ago, get my email from paul67 another who frequents the tav with me occasionally !

  10. I saw £6.5m earlier for Dempsey but how many clubs could make a fortune on the back of jersey sales in the States given our profile there and cl we could make a signing such as this work? He is in dispute with Fulham so they would prefer to sell him outwith premiership, would he come to us?

Surely if we are courting the American market for soccer a business case could be made to make such a signing!!!

Straight swap in terms of Ki money (no pun intended) a fraction of CL cash, jersey sales would cover bulk of his wages and we have a player for the next 4 years and a massively high profile in one of the richest & largest markets.

We already have a young team……senior squad age avg. 25……

That’s nothing compared to some of the fast-tracked Sevco FC first-teamers…some are a mere glint of an eye…Gottlieb Foetus is a German striker on trial at the moment, but the deals in its embryonic stages. “He incubates in the box” said his agent Hans Flusen Nudel.

Are you on for that malt tasting tomorrow, the place you recommended I hope he has Springbank Malt on display, read up on Springbank, and I’ll have to find a couple of bottles to my taste, probably have about ten sups tomorrow.

Oldtim, I thought the Springbank Distillery was shut again. They did some really nice malts. A mate of mine bought two special edition bottles about ten years ago. Paid about 200quid each. I said no, too expensive and was worried I’d come in fae the pub and fancy a wee hauf and open one. They are now worth over 2 grand a bottle. very rich Chinese are paying mega bucks for rare whiskies. if you do find any Springbank let us know. The ten year old was pretty good.

Just divorce and remarry and try that for size.

I think she wears a size 6 boot but it felt more.

  16. Berbatov.. I’d rather we went for someone like John Guidetti from Man City on loan.

At only 20 he scored 20 goals in 23 games for Feyenoord last term on loan and wouldn’t cost anywhere near as much in wages.

Wonkyradar – those two orcs were fighting over something that merely resembled the end of the world. It appears that the end of the world fell from Estadio’s quite sober anus earlier.

Mind you, he did mention a Sasquatch family so they may have been in the area.

  19. Rangers GB has a nice ring to it.

I’m sure The Green Brigade would have plenty to say about.

Or is this yet another cunning stunt by the ringmaster, Green by name….Green by nature.

    : > )

  20. Just popped out for the messages and now we have Berbatov and Dempsey up front, that’ll do nicely…

I would doubt either of those Bhoys will join us but this transfer windae has be stone dead..

I like Dempsey and someone on here suggested him a good few weeks ago…

Will the mustache spring a mystery guest on us, will PL get his bonus…

Will we sign JR from the Southfork…

Did Tommy Burns no go a whole season undefeated and yet still lost the league?

  22. “Marquee signings”? The Sevcovian hun outfit is an entire circus short of a marquee….

My old man knew them from Carfin, when I went I was one of two from Hamilton pretty soon the team was full of Hamilton boys..

    Is the club still going?

  24. I feel like a Cassandra or a Jeremiah on here. There’s all this talk again about a couple of signings. Now, while I have been all for us signing a class CH for YEARS, as I said the other day: class players are not going to come to Cetic to play in the SPL. And I don’t fancy us buying SPL youngsters, who may look the part with another team but don’t have to deal with the difficulties Celtic players have to put up with.

  25. I don’t agree with the lack of investment and will be bitterly disappointed if an experienced CH isn’t brought in for the CL.

If no quality is added to the squad, defence mainly, then the team faces a potential hammering in the CL which I nor any fan wants to see. The affect this would have on the rest of team could be catastrophic.

All good managers say you must ‘build from the back’. So what is the point in having a good midfield and attacking players if you cannot defend a lead. Mulgrew and Rogne are good enough but not as a combo.

I think young Watt could be a suprise package this season and has makings of a good player so if we only get a decent defender I would be happy.

If PL thinks letting a team of great potential go out and risk a hammering because won’t buy an experienced defender then watch their values plummet ! This CL could see their values sore if given a chance but the way Helsinborg kept FF busy should surely convince NL that a decent team would have scored 3 or 4.

What about Zambrotta or Chivu ? All bosmans and left their club.

  26. With Peter L at the helm we will never follow the way of the Sevconians and quite rightly so.

You can only ever spend what you earn once operating costs are paid. In principal I agree with that statement but in business it can be good practice to borrow money in order to develop your business, provided you have the means to repay it.

I can’t help but feel now is the time to develop our business, our team. We do not need to spend huge amounts on it and nor should we but if we can’t afford to buy a player, or two, outright and with the (almost) guaranteed CL money coming in this season I suspect we can, then a little borrowing should deffinately be considered. It would give everyone a boost; club, team and fans alike.

And least, if not last, it would help nip the feel-good factor that the Sevconians are starting to feel, in the bud. Help remind them who they are, where they are and why they are there.

wonkyradar – Is the Ramsden Cup trophy made up of melted down sovvy rings?

So Sevco hands have already been on the Ramsdens Cup. (thumbsup)

  28. Len Brennan@16:19

Guidetti is one that fits our buying profile. Young, talented and a goalscorer. The only problem is Man City see that also and will only loan him out.He has now recovered from the illness which caused paralysis in his right leg. If you want to buy him the price starts at £7m. There are more than a dozen clubs interested in doing so. We won’t be one of them unfortunately

  29. I wish Ki well in the furthering of his career.

The boy deserves all the success that I hope comes to him.

To leave home at 16 for a new country and culture, Australia,in search of a football career takes guts and ambition.

To then, at 20 to come to the Kicking Fields of Scotland, to us, to toughen up, showed determination and a singleness of purpose.

Now, by going to Swansea, at 23, he is taking a big, but sustainable step up to the EPL.

I would hazard a guess that within three years, at his peak, he will get his big move.

    Possibly, back to Celtic!

    The lad deserves it.

    A well planned career.

  30. If Sevco had been applying for a brand new membership of the Scottish FA, they would have needed four years of accounts to become an associate member. Participation in the SFL is dependant on being either a full or associate member of the Scottish FA.The difference in this situation is that Sevco applied to have the old company’s registration transferred to them. As the oldco had submitted historic accounts, with the exception of 2011, the four year rule does not apply. A stipulating factor in the transfer of membership was the continuation of “Rangers”, unlike the Airdrieonian’s situation- so they would get to keep the history but would not be culpable for the previous clubs debts?

Does this then mean transfer of membership is also transfer of history/honours of the previous club? A bit like “All of Me” when Steve Martin is hit oan the napper wae the gurus pot…the voodoo legalese means the oldco “possess” the newco…if this is true it seems like an almighty stitch up of sorts.
