Sweden, Finland, Norway and Denmark all possible for Celtic

947

Delighted for Aberdeen, winning away from home in Croatia is no mean feat for a Scottish club, but a 0-3 result, anywhere, is a special result.  None of the other 32 away teams could manage so much as a two goal win.

The Inverness defeat on their maiden European performance was pity, if not a surprise.  Winning your home game is regarded as the Cardinal Rule in Europe, but they have a puncher’s chance next week in Romania.  Score the opening goal and it’s anyone’s game.

Today’s draw for the Champions League 3rd round qualifier has the potential to get a bit tasty.  There are plenty of potential opponents from northern Europe with trips to Sweden, Finland, Norway and Denmark all possible, while Celtic are the only seed from northern Europe.  Hopefully Uefa, in their keenness for geographical neighbourliness, don’t feel the need to send us to Israel, Poland or Serbia.  If we take care of Stjarnan, of course.

Yes, didn’t want to cause Malone’s any bother but Peter will be busy working out budget travel flights now so won’t be paying any attention here.

With the high ceiling at the back, it’s more a sports cathedral than a pub. Friendly, welcoming staff.

Had Wednesday breakfast in Alfredo’s back in Glasgow and they were expecting to have it as well. Fairly widespread coverage I reckon from like-minded souls.

Joe McBride for 18 months was up there with Greaves who’s the best English striker in my time, ahead of Shearer, Lineker and Rooney.

Ive got a few scouse mates, had some great adventures over the years.

Ive got them all Celtic minded:)

Got a txt message on Sunday…they were complaining about the “Orange wooly-back bassas” doing their wee walk about Liverpool.

And ive done my bit…by taking quite a few of my scouse pals to Celtic Park….Lets just say they were impressed:)

The fact that so many of us so fondly remember Joe McBride is testament to the contribution

    he made to us.

I had assumed cruciate was his problem. That may not be the case.

While I’m here, Scotland can use some Celtic-style support tomorrow morning against Oman at Goldenacre for anyone who can be at Inverleith Row at 10am.

Free entry and the game will be finished before 1pm. Crucial game as we’re level with Oman ahead of the game. Regret I’ll miss it after having good fun this week.

A truly great centre forward / a truly great goal scorer ..

Living at Queens Cross , I used to go and watch the Jags when Celtic were playing away . . Early 60s , they included Joe Mc Bride . . I used to wish that Celtic would sign him – they eventually did – Bingo !

Ok, that’s it. I’m bringing back corner watch for this season. The rules are, competitive games only. Goals scored / conceded only count if they are first phase. I decide what constitutes first phase.

Enjoying work today. Guy I’m working with is a big hun. Part of the process we’re working on involves undertaking an Infrastructure Risk Assessment (IRA). Lorra lorra jokes from me. He’s a bit uncomfortable about it all…. :-)))

    ===========================================

    LOL, excellent.

You could ask him if he’d be more comfortable just referring to it as a ‘RA’.

Then you could suggest a low result at first but increasing on review – ask him if he thinks you should ‘up the RA’…

  11. My wife’s boss is trying to visit all senior football grounds in Scotland. He travels up from Cumbria each week. He ticked off Celtic Park on Wednesday night. Said he was very impressed by the stadium. So much better than the rundown Ibrox park. The Celtic supporters impressed him as well, unlike the Ibrox supporters who just seemed bad tempered and foul mouthed. I don’t think he was just saying that because I am Celtic supporter.

  12. I’m fed up with this Champions league qualifying games, half way through a game and they make a draw for the next round? What’s that all about? It’s a farce and makes a mockery of the tournament in my opinion, there is no level playing field at all, all it is set up for are countries from, Germany, Spain, England, Italy, France, Russia, we don’t stand a chance if the truth be known, gets to the point when you say what is the point? Groups of four should be drawn at this stage if we are going down this road, because that’s basically what we are doing playing six games to qualify, and winner of the group goes through, but there problems with that is some teams don’t have the money to travel to three countries, that I get, and that’s the point they shouldent be in the competition but if we are successful we have to travel to these places, now how is that fair, by the time we get to and if we get to the group section Celtic fans will have travelled to three different countries, while the prize guys haven’t spent a penny, and they are guaranteed £20 million, and there fans haven’t spent a tosser, so think of the money and flying hours we put into the tournament, and what the rest do?

Fair? Naaaaaaa a don’t think so, in my opinion.

  13. Joe Filippis Haircut on

Tonydonnelly67. You have a point but if we were not playing these games Celtic would likely be playing meaningless friendlies all over the World. So in my opinion these competitive games are better than friendlies. However,I do believe the C.L. favours the richest clubs. H.H.

Iceland are actually ranked six places higher than Scotland. So I suppose we could claim that a Scottish team beating an Icelandic team is like a Romanian team beating a German team, a Slovakian team beating an English team, or an English team beating a Belgian team (lol!).

  16. My enduring memory of Joe McBride was a chance he missed, for Scotland against Wales in Cardiff in October 1966 (you can see it at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ncOj106-D8 ). Dennis Law carried the rebound into the net via his backside. We were behind the goal. It was an atrocious pitch.

This was the day after the Aberfan disaster, hence the rain. People went round the ground with sheets so that money could be thrown in. There was a real sense of shock, but I think that people just wanted to be together. Football is a lot less important than life and death. I went back to Aberfan in the 1980’s just for a quiet few moments.

I remember a Scotland match being cancelled because it nearly (nearly!) clashed with Diana’s funeral. Changed days.

  17. Afternoon all

    On my break

Assuming we go through – and I am- I have to admit to some apprehension with the next round. In many ways the key games of our season as success guarantees European football in some form until Christmas we have a fairly rotten record against teams from Central/Eastern Europe and the heat could be a factor in the away leg. Job has to be done at Paradise much more so than Sjarnan I would have thought. Of course either team could be another Suduva or Diyosgeor ( or whatever their name was) in which case the return will be a formality.

Nice to see mention of Charlie Gallagher. A really clever, skilful player he played in the first three matches I was ever at. One or two around us gave him a bit of stick as he was considered a bit less than wholehearted but my dad confirmed that these people knew nothing about football.

And talk of Joe McBride reminds me that his boy was in the year above me at school and so Joe sr was the hero of the school. Even when Stevie Chalmers boys started a couple of years later.

Now a question. Joe McBride, Stevie Chalmers, Tommy Callaghan and Andy Lynch all lived in my home town ( TC still does) . Of this distinguished quartet which is the odd one out when it comes to what were once known as Old Firm matches?

Neither Azerbaijan nor Montenegro are on that list, so we’re as good as in the play-offs if we beat the Icelandic giants!

  21. Jimbo67, we will go through to play (probably) Qarabag, whom I know nothing whatsoever about. Then if we win that tie we could potentially line up against any of the following teams (based on highest ranked teams winning in each round) in the final play-off round:

    APOEL Nicosia

    BATE Borisov

    Ludogorets Razgrad

    Dinamo Zagreb

I hope it’s the Montenegro team we face, don’t fancy Qarabag, they have posted some good results last season beating Salzburg, drawing with Inter and beating Dnipro (UEFA league finalists) and knocking out FC Twente.

Just agreeing with bigchipsuk that the FIFA list isn’t much of a guide when it comes to judging the strengths or otherwise of a country’s club sides.
