Sweeten the medicine, Celtic

991

There is an unusually sombre tempo head of tomorrow’s Champions League last 16 tie, a consequences of the 0-3 reversal at home three weeks ago and the general sentiment around Scottish football this week, but this match is an excellent test for both manager and playing squad.

We are a Champions League team again with aspirations to achieve at this level next season.  Having finally overcome the hoodoo of never having won away from home in the competition, we must use occasions like tomorrow to continue our growth in the competition.

We defended our 18-yard line in the Camp Nou and almost got away with a point.  The plan was wrong in Lisbon, where a talented Benfica controlled midfield and recorded a narrow win, but the win against Spartak in Moscow was deserved.

Celtic might not be able to qualify for the quarter finals but they can win the match tomorrow; this is an achievable objective which would sweeten the inevitable medicine.

SERGEJUS FEDOTOVAS today claimed Vladimir Romanov will still have control of Hearts despite resigning as chairman of the club’s parent company, Ukio Bankas Investment Group. The entire UBIG board, including Romanov and Fedotovas, have stepped down, although Fedotovas remains a director at Tynecastle.

Romanov owns a 16.9 per cent stake in UBIG, which
Fedotovas claims is sufficient for him to remain in control of the Edinburgh club. UBIG own a majority shareholding in Hearts, however the long-term future of the Lithuanian group seems uncertain following the collapse of Ukio Bankas.

Fedotovas would not disclose the reasons behind his or Romanov’s resignation from UBIG. He believes the changes will have minimal impact on Hearts, who owe UBIG more than £22 million in debt as of their last set of accounts.

Struggling to get excited about football after the weeks LNS decision! Then to see Ogilvie doing the draw for the semis (they may as well have had “two fingers” doing the draw!

I think a lot of fans are feeling helpless at the moment. The SPL not appealing the decision shows that they are not up for the fight and the silence from our club is understandable if not slightly annoying.

Any ideas of how we can publicly show our contempt for the governing body and force them in to change?

PS. I appreciate your efforts to lift our spirits. HH

I hope we do well tomorrow but I think winning is above the ability of this current Celtic team it would need every player to be 100% on the night and Juventus to be well below there normal game.If we get a draw it will be a good result and progress will have been made.We need to start improving the squad now for next seasons qualifyers several of our current squad are likely to be sold in the summer and we need to have replacements lined up as quickly as possible.H.H.

I think Celtic will raise our game, following the reversal at Celtic Park which was never a

‘three nil defeat’. Since that game we’ve had an adverse reaction, and a bit of a hangover.

We’ll reaffirm how, and why we made it in the CL this season, whatever the final aggregate.

  18. Let us enjoy probably or last game in this years CL. It has been a noble brave campaign, marred only by a cowardly Ref last time out. we punched above our weight and bloodied a few noses along the way. I’m not being defeatist, but 3-0 is a tall order

However thank you Celtic for some wonderful euro nights. Here’s to many more next year, HH

  21. The saddest part of the game tomorrow for me is, first leg result notwithstanding, I am struggling to get even remotely interested,

Having followed the ‘Tic for close on 60 years a statement I find I am amazed at.

However it’s honestly how I feel.

Can’t believe how disgusted I feel.

I see a mass of season book refusals next year – regardless of pricing.

You see we don’t behave in the same vengeful, spiteful way of the Southsiders. We are their betters in so many ways.

Lots of hard thinking in the days ahead needed from PL and the board. If there was ever a time an EGM was required surely this is the moment. However this would be a waste unless the board were actually considering some serious action. I have no doubt they are not planning to do take an affirmative stance.

So,so sad that corruption has won out again.

  22. I posted earlier that Iwill not attend semi final unless my club and/or clubs resist Lord NimbleWordsmith punishment etc.

I accept that no one is likely to pay much attention to my absence but I am happy to give my twenty five quid to anyone who is willing to organise a fly by on the day or media advert or something similar.

It also occurs to me that dundee utd fans may feel the same.

I may suggest this on Splfansunited once I register.

  23. time for change on

Roll on tomorrow night surely an occasion to enjoy…..

Must admit I’m disappointed with the decision not to appeal the Lord Nimmo Smith verdict, however I have not been party to what was discussed at the meeting which decided this so will wait before condemning outright.

Interested to note some of the comment attributed to Charles Green last night/today with regards any new body and the decision making process (of which his club has no vote) in particular to who sits on the committees and Boards (in particular Chairs) … in my view this is something we need to keep an eye upon…….no one from the new team should be anywhere near them (until they meet the criteria to actually join the league as full members, which may yet take some time).

I think that’ll I’ll continue to support Celtic at home, I’m not going to kill my club for the sake of others (they’ll try hard enough themselves). I was brought up being told I was suffering from paranoia………well my children are being brought up with the knowledge that we were correct, they cheated got caught and now we’ll keep stripping them of their corrupt hiding places.

Possible film about Brother Walfrid being discussed (another way to annoy them methinks!!!!!!!!!

I’m afraid I spend more time lurking these days but some mixed bag of news to newborn babies welcome to the Celtic family……to those of you ill my prayers and thoughts …..finally hope the wee dog gets a great name..

Hail Hail all and thanks for sharing your thoughts

  24. twists n turns on

    Paul 67

winning the game tomorrow is an achievable objective? I would suggest it’s only achievable if Juve decide to hold what they have and we sneak a goal late on. I doubt it very much though. I think they will look to finish the game with an early goal, and they will probably get one.

We have conceded 14 times in our last ten games, and 4 of those were v St Mirren, so I don’t hold out much hope for a clean sheet tomorrow. I see a repeat of the 1st leg result, which brings me to my point.

Year in year out we seem to start a new season with poor defenders who can be made to look even poorer than they are due to the style we play. This baffles me. You can get away with your defenders charging on in the SPL, due to the number of goals we will score at the other end, but Izzy, Adam, Mikael, Charlie, Effy, are caught so often , even in the SPL, either out of position or on the wrong foot, that every game is always gonna be fraught with danger against a quality side, and even some mediocre and poor sides.

I think we had success v Barca simply because we didn’t see our full backs and central defenders bombing on, but they stayed back in numbers and managed to keep Barca out for the greater part of the game at CP. When Juve came calling. it was back to the old routine and the result of a 3 0 home defeat is not that difficult to understand.

So what do we do tomorrow evening Paul? Sit in and try for a 1-0 win, play it safe ala Barca away and suffer glorious defeat? or have our defenders bombing on and lose 3-0 again?

I cannot see any way we can win this game tomorrow. I hope to be proved wrong. I do hope though that we learn valuable lessons and bring in 2 solid defenders for next season. Mind you, I have been asking for that since around 2005, i.e decent solid defenders, but our scouts/management team for the past 6 years or so have struggled to find any.
