Sweeten the medicine, Celtic

991

There is an unusually sombre tempo head of tomorrow’s Champions League last 16 tie, a consequences of the 0-3 reversal at home three weeks ago and the general sentiment around Scottish football this week, but this match is an excellent test for both manager and playing squad.

We are a Champions League team again with aspirations to achieve at this level next season.  Having finally overcome the hoodoo of never having won away from home in the competition, we must use occasions like tomorrow to continue our growth in the competition.

We defended our 18-yard line in the Camp Nou and almost got away with a point.  The plan was wrong in Lisbon, where a talented Benfica controlled midfield and recorded a narrow win, but the win against Spartak in Moscow was deserved.

Celtic might not be able to qualify for the quarter finals but they can win the match tomorrow; this is an achievable objective which would sweeten the inevitable medicine.

Agree with every word, excellent post.

‘Bombing on’ regularly comes a cropper in domestic games also, a la St Mirren at Hampden.

Motherwell at Fir Park yada yada.

Juve haven’t lost a home European tie since Bayern humped them 4-1 in late 2009.. 17 games .

Games are being played —— media are suggesting significant changes to their usual line up whilst Conte trots out a first picks line.

Look forward to getting settled up with our £millions and preparing for next seasons European exploits.

That’s the difference between Celtic and Newco…a vast distance of leagues and financial scales that may never be overcome…

” it wasn’t a 3-0 game in Glasgow —– 2 of Juve’s goals were gifts from Celtic . I think Juve will play the same way in Torino , sit deep and wait for a mistake. ”

Whatever will be will be tomorrow.

Celtic have done remarkably well this season but the real work begins after tomorrow.

We still have a league to win and are currently only (I know) 16 points clear. We have a very hard game on Saturday and we should consider this the pivotal game.

Win it and we have a guaranteed 16 point lead with 24 points left to play for. That would mean 3 more victories unless our opponents lose or draw games. Getting a result at Ross County is both more realistic AND important in preparation for next season’s Qualifiers.

Whatever will be will be in the Scottish cup. Personally I wouldn’t be that bothered if Hibs finally won it after the 112 years. I don’t think many would begrudge them that.

    Spot on.

    What’s not to enjoy ?

There was not one SINGLE person on this site who predicted pre-season that Celtic would not only qualify for a group, .. but emerge from that group of death to join the elite of Europe’s giants.

    We are in WONDERLAND.

There can be no result tomorrow which would put a dampener on a great achievement.

    Que sera, sera.

  8. If we score first and early, the game is open.

Score the second and all hell breaks loose.

The key is to not concede and score the first goal within 20 mins.

    Whats the problem ?

As a 111er,she looks and listens for the Green Brigade as it reminds her of three-quarters of a lifetime ago when I took her to The Jungle for the first time. She “got it” first time.

    Enjoy yer birthday,L.

Many happy returns to your sister also.

  12. Paul,

For many of us, tomorrow’s game is overshadowed by the feeling of betrayal by Scottland’s football authorities.

At the present time, this includes all SPL clubs, subject to more information, for their “moving on ” stance.

My own view is that such was the stitch up regarding the Commission, the SFA/Rangers had a guarentee of success. The fact that the “clinching” submission came from an SFA employee and the SFa are the Apellate body, rendered an appeal doomed to failure.

It was always the plan for sins to be dumped and the newclub to carry on, at whatever level they could access.

As sure as shooting, there will be serious attempts to fast track them up the leagues.

Only for united action by shareholders of other SPL clubs, they would be at a higher level than they had expected.

I understand the feelings of those who resist the call to cancel our ST books, as it will punish the innocent. Us.

I also understand the feelings of those who no longer wise to support and be complicit in a corrupt system, as it punishes everyone, bar one.

The real enemy in all of this, is the SFA.

They not only permitted RFC to engage in corrupt practises, they also facillitated them in escaping just consequences of those practises.

Therefore, how do we express our distaste at the SFA?

For a start, highlight the situation by refusing to attend ANY games under their auspices, at Hampden or elsewhere.

This will involve harnessing the same spirit that brought club chairmen to their knees last summer.

By boycotting the semi and, hopefully the final, a clear, positive message will be sent out to the football world that the SFA are a major problem.

If there is no sign of improvement, then, when SB time comes around, a rethink may be necessary.

Don’t leave it to other clubs’ fans to do the needful.

Celtic are well able to play a game in front of empty stands, because such action will be done for love of the club and the game and not as a protest over some internal matter.

If they are incapable of so doing, then they shouldn’t be there!

Did somebody say there was a game tomorrow?

Thank God we are playing a team far removed from corrupt practises!

  13. I don’t hold any aspirations about qualifying but certainly hope we put on much more of a show. Certainly going there to defend in depth and hang on for a draw or a narrow defeat won’t enhance our reputation. We should be looking to take the game to them if we lose a goal no real damage done but press them whenever possible.

Lessons should certainly be taken onboard about the dead ball tactics, hopefully the players show more savvy in dealing with instead of hoping the referee will intervene.

Benfica away was a chance wasted, show what we have learned Bhoys.

  14. Doc,

Putting all this weeks disappointment behind me and just going to enjoy tomorrow night.

Hope we go for the throat from the outset and generally give a good account of ourselves, we have made many people sit up and take notice this year in Europe both home and away, its important we continue.

As for everything else – I’ll worry about it when the games over and everyone has their say (or doesn’t say anything) but until then I make no decisions.

Enjoy the game bhoys and keep the faith

  19. The Token Tim, thanks.

    Back to work now.

Thanks to all who have spared a thought and sent up a prayer, it is very much appreciated.

Tough times, but with friends and family nothing is insurmountable.

  20. Just canny get excited about the game tomorrow, nothing to do with us being 3-0 down.I just feel so pissed off about what is happening with football nowadays.I just do not mean in Scotland (although thats the biggest reason)Its just not the same,so much cheating and corruption going on,its no longer a spor its all about moneyt.I am no longer willing to spend my money on it,TV subscription attending games etc.

  21. Just imagine walking down the Copeland Road and the guy in front of you starts singing TBB, is there a hotline to Charles to alert him to this?

Lets say the guy in the next seat to you starts singing TBB, do you report him to a steward, just how will this be managed.

Remember also that anyone who is reported will want to know who reported them, Ally uses this phrase all the time, I’m sure the fans must also know it.

The CL adventure has lit up an otherwise dull season for me.I hope we can put up another good away performance, and hopefully grab a goal or 2 for the bhoys making the journey. The CL games have been an education for a relatively new manager and group of players, hopefully we can use the experience in qualifying for the next couple of seasons.

I remain enthusiastic about the football team, my perhaps tenuous connection to it and its history. However I empathise with most of your post.

I had a rant to day on another site…..I would post it here but frankly I was so angry that my language and grammar would not have got above a bug ‘nada’ from my teachers.
