Sweeten the medicine, Celtic

991

There is an unusually sombre tempo head of tomorrow’s Champions League last 16 tie, a consequences of the 0-3 reversal at home three weeks ago and the general sentiment around Scottish football this week, but this match is an excellent test for both manager and playing squad.

We are a Champions League team again with aspirations to achieve at this level next season.  Having finally overcome the hoodoo of never having won away from home in the competition, we must use occasions like tomorrow to continue our growth in the competition.

We defended our 18-yard line in the Camp Nou and almost got away with a point.  The plan was wrong in Lisbon, where a talented Benfica controlled midfield and recorded a narrow win, but the win against Spartak in Moscow was deserved.

Celtic might not be able to qualify for the quarter finals but they can win the match tomorrow; this is an achievable objective which would sweeten the inevitable medicine.

  1. some people have laughed at the sevco fans for being gullible and believing everything they are told by their leaders and they must button up at the back, well what would you call supporters who are willing to accept cheating and worse who are paying for the previlage of being cheated?

Mate, I think it’s going to take a club to go to the Court of Arbitration in Sport with this. Left to the people here, who, understandably, in the face of the shrieking gale and in the crosshairs of the bullet senders and bomb makers, and with the peculiarly “Scottish understanding” we see applied to so much of this we’re never going to get restitution here.

Take it outside the country. Where it should have been in the beginning. The SPL no longer wants to act. The SFA are compromised at the highest level. This is a scandal with no parallel anywhere in sport.

Left here in Scotland, it will never resolve itself. LNS verdict has left us the worst of all possible worlds. Rangers are, now and forever, branded cheats, but with no sanctions and a media treating them as if they’ve won the historical lesson will never be learned and they will never move on. We will never move on, as we’re the one’s who’ve been done up.

This needs to be resolved outside Scotland. And that means one of our clubs, or one of the clubs in Europe, needs to take this to CAS.

I agree, and there is a shadow cast over the game, somewhat ironically that is stretching all the way to Turin.

A boycott however, is never unanimous in most cases, and I fear it would apportion the Celtic fans, who would be torn between supporting Celtic in hugely important games, and demonstrating to the SFA that we know they are prejudiced.

I’d prefer the club to take the lead in the coming days rather than for example the CSA backing a boycott, and the GB saying no. Celtic are unique and our unlikely allies may disappear like tears in the rain.

The Celtic statement was welcome but minimalist, and when Celtic have Juventus out of the way, I’d expect directorship, coming from Celtic Park, let them earn the astronomical salaries, initiate historical groundbreaking guidance for Celtic.

What precisely the club whether in conjunction with other SPL sides or not, have in store for the future of Celtic the club and it’s supporters in light of another being found guilty of a generation of cheating, without appropriate sanction?

Here we are tomorrow at the big table where we want to be, and we surely must give our 100% support to the Bhoys in what will be a tough match.

To qualify is probably beyond us, but a win or even a draw would mean that we finish the campaign on a positive note, and continue to build up our profile in Europe.

This season has been the first in many that we can honestly say we have competed with the best. Lenny and the Bhoys must take great credit from that.

    A nice analogy mate.

We’ve tried going through “proper channels”. At the top of those “channels” is a guy who was involved in the fraud, aided and abetted by an old enemy of our club.

Which brings me to another sunny point …

Part of this is our own damned fault, you know. Part of it is our fault for not using our position, and our influence, as the biggest club in the land, to clean out the ranks of these people, people who will never play it straight.

The guy in charge of registrations was involved in the CADETE SCANDAL for Gods sake … why did our club ever allow him to remain in post?

We are inadvertently the architects of our misery at times.

  22. Folly Folly, BSR,

Thanks gents, for taking the time to read and reply to my post.

I, as a non Scottish resident and now non attending fan, am always reluctant to suggest anyone staying away from a particular game.

My preferred option would be for the SPL clubs to have acted in this matter.

However, it appears that they have been neutered by the nature of the appeals process, i.e. in house SFA, who, I contend, have always been the real villains of the piece.

They have contrived to facilitate the mess that the game is in.

Therefore, like last year, only the active supporters can act in a meaningful way.

Apart from banners in Turin tomorrow, which would be a great idea:-

    WHY SION – NOT RANGERS

what other powers do the fans have?

The money in their pockets seems to me to be all.

In a situation as serious as this, I don’t accept that the team need our backing at Hampden for the semi.

Our team should be inspired by such an action.

    Alternatives?

Don’t attend Celtic Park, because the Board did nothing? Who will that hurt?

Walk away and don’t renew SBs? That’s going to happen for many if there is no challenge to the SFA.

Withdrawing attendance for the semi, will have the least fiancial impact on Celtic as the combined semi gates are split between the four clubs, after the SFA get their cut.

I look on it as an “Ask not what your club can do for you, but what you can do for your club”, opportunity.

Otherwise, let’s stay in our comfortable victim role. It’s what we’re used to.

  23. Just a wee thought…

Does anybody think that, well I’m saying this with the benefit of hindsight….that, maybe, just maybe…the Celtic board have taken the decision to – look the other way and, not go down the road of an appeal…based on the opinion of Stewart Reagan(which was swept under the carpet) about – the social disorder issue that would probably have been the order of the day had – LNS took the tainted titles ?

I mean…we’re talking about hun-savages on a scale that would make Manchester 08 look like handbags – on the streets of the west of Scotland were we(Celtic fans) would be outnumbered by 16-1(I think) ?

We’re talking about the possible loss of a Celtic supporter or, supporters lives here.

If, the Celtic Board by taking this action / inaction has or will prevent the above coming to pass then, I for one, would understand this position.

P.S. I’m under the impression that – UEFA know that the huns are band of savages and, will not – under any circumstances take them on. Notice how the huns have escaped with little more than – slaps on the wrists for their misdemeanors on the continent.

Can’t reply to anybody just now – laters

Never commented on the first match against Juve, such was my disappoinment at a result that gave us little or no chance of progressing. And the wrestling of course. Not sure offhand but I think that 0-3 defeat is possibly our worst ever defeat in Europe, at Celtic Park. Certainly up there anyhow. And to later hear Neil Lennon describe our start to the game as “brilliant” only compounded the pain. Losing a goal after three minutes, at any level of football, is not and never will be brilliant. Of course we could still have taken something from the game, but the record shows, we didn’t. Even, so tomorrow is our twelfth night in Europe this season, and should we somehow conjure up a win, then eight wins, three defeats and one draw would represent a terrific effort by all concerned.

  26. Still disgusted over the whole LNS fiasco and inaction by us or the rest of the SPL.

Two things the club should announce immediately after the Juve game:

    1) A demand that Ogilvie be removed from position at the SFA

    2) That Celtic are scratching from this season’s Scottish Cup. ( Ideally they would be supported by others but, hey, I accept we live in the real world)

These are tokens but would somehow make me feel the board are actually listening to the fans.

  27. Thomthetim,

I agree totally with the sentiments you expressed in your post.

I am extremely reluctant to support a boycott of any football matches at this stage though.

In my view we need to put the LNS thing to one side and go after the real culprits who you have rightly identified as the SFA. CO, SR et al must be removed from office before confidence in the impartiality and competence of the ruling body can be restored.

I would like to see fans of all clubs lobby their boards to move for a vote of no confidence in the SFA. Further action could be co-ordinated through a petition to Supporters Direct Scotland or http://www.scottishfans.org/

The ship may have sailed as regards the LNS enquiry but we can make sure it never happens again by going for the jugular at the SFA.

Cynical me thinks that such a banner would see Celtic being punished by UEFA for bringing the game into disrepute .

Sion’s crime was to challenge UEFA ‘s authority and to tell the world —— Here — have a look at this lot . UEFA appear to be perfectly content to allow the SFA to manage Scottish football.

  29. Dont think ive ever felt so down about Celtic, football and Scottish football in particular . The final humiliation is that our club just meekly accept the LNS / SFA collusion and then we have Ogilvie making a draw .
