Sydney, Newco and the £10m liability

294

Not all contracts are fulfilled.  Usually, the failure is caused by an underperformance, less often, by one party wilfully reneging on their obligations.

Newco’s fans, and other fans, have bought tickets for games at the Ange Coming Home Tour that will not happen, leaving the promoters with an obligation to refund money.  Money paid for promotional events has been wasted, as has costs sunk into the setup.  Perhaps only the lawyers’ fees were not wasted.

Contracts have been concluded with Celtic, at a sum more than twice as high as Newco’s, agreements are in place with other clubs too.  The promoters need to fulfil those contracts – in Celtic’s case, the deal is not dependent on Newco attending.   Celtic contracted to play the tournament without mention of any other club.  The promoters have a £6m liability to Celtic and doubtlessly a few million to other clubs, venues and elsewhere.

If you detect some frustration from the promoters in response to Newco’s unilateral withdrawal from the Ange tour, it is not difficult to imagine why.  They will now attempt to line-up an alternative attendee that allows them to sell the tickets and the TV rights necessary to keep the project afloat.

Now that other clubs know Celtic bid the price up to £6m, the promoters are unlikely to find a suitable draw who are as disparate as Newco and to accept the first offer of £2.5m.  Any substitute club capable of selling the required volume of tickets will demand parity with Celtic.  That’s a bitter £3.5m pill to swallow.

I expect they are looking at a £10m liability if the project fails to go ahead.  The costs of starting again with another club are likely to be £5m more than the promoters initially budgeted.  These tours always carry a commercial risk for the promoters, but no one ever makes this kind of money.  The project is underwater.

Today the promoters will be running various scenarios.  I expect they will try to get a big English club to step in.  Either way, they will tally up the costs and get the lawyers on the phone.  The £2.5m fee Newco will not now collect, is only the first phase of their exposure.

Newco made a mistake in signing the initial contract.  Without wanting to be petty here, they are a newer corporate structure than Celtic, with less experience and expertise.  They cannot be expected to be as accomplished as more experienced clubs.

Neither sets of fans wanted the game, but in bowing the pressure, Newco exposed themselves to far greater risks.  Sometimes you need to take an unpopular stance for the good of the club, even if you were the one who made the initial mistake.  Fans never say, “Indulge our demands and expose the club to a £10m liability that could do longterm harm to our strategic aims”, but scenarios like this are played out by angry mobs everywhere.

Despite the unpopularity of the game, Celtic had an easy decision to make.  We still do not know if we will get Champions League money next season, but the Ange Tour money will cover the fee being asked for, for one of our top signing priorities.  As I mentioned, sometimes you need to take an unpopular stance for the good of the club.  Insert our own “Indulge our demands… strategic aims” quote here.

Newco apparently briefed that one of their objections to the tour was that the phrase “Old Firm” would not be used.  I know this subject has been covered at several AGMs, on here and other places many times – but some people live to wind up Celtic fans.  Through copywrite, Celtic and Newco have a legal veto over the commercialisation of the phase “Old Firm”.

If you have any connection to football, you know this is because Celtic moved to kill the phrase in any commercial sense.  If, when this tour was announced, you used this copywrite to claim the exact opposite, that Celtic cherish that phrase and status, you need to take a good look at yourself in the mirror.  What are you trying to do to Celtic fans, what are you trying to do to the club?

For the watching CSC.

Elephant Beer. Dukes near the Kelvin Hall used to have a wee Carlsberg Elephant beer chalk board at the side of the bar. One of the staff had written below Carlsberg Elephant beer , as drunk by Davie Dodds.

  5. Callum has played mair fitba than Anyone in World fitba over the last 5 years, I reckon. He deserves a rest more than any other player, Callum is the Celtic Xavi – Priceless.

Callum has adapted his game to the role his Manager has asked. Efter Notts County we had a Goal Scoring midfielder, hopefully our Captain can get shooting mair and grabbing a lot mair goals. Shoot!!!!

I want the Scandinavians to apologise for raiding Dumbarton in 870 Ad and enslaving some of the locals, also the Normans to apologise for killing my Saxon ancestors.

The whole thing is nuts its lets just rewrite history cos we dont like it.

    Hi St Patrick’s Bhoy.

Sounds like your mind is made up,but you have waited a long time to bring it up :-)

It’s not that we don’t like it,it’s a matter of correcting the historical amnesia that goes on with decision making at government level, the same historical amnesia that deemed the famine was gods way whilst Ireland exported food.

That historical amnesia means history is given full context, how the empire was built on other humans, the intrusion into say the carribean of the civilising force(slave owner)and the exchange of slaves across the Atlantic meant the trait of racism brought to Ireland in the 1100s was exported with the growth of union and empire, that racism is rife today,

The record keeping of the historical record is important, the record keeping of human ownership is in some cases similar to the insane admin at Auschwitz.

As our knowledge grows, you may be correct,we don’t like it,racist slave owning wealth clashing with historical amnesia and it gives us street names akin to hitlerstrasse, goeringstrasse. I feel we should own that history instead of suckling a lie constantly being told.

  10. Just a wee word on energy prices and what European Governments are doing. Most countries are responding in a similar way to the UK with help for consumers – most slightly less, a couple slightly more. France is different due to the fact that 75%+ of their electricity is nuclear generated, and therefore not dependent on, and much cheaper, than coal, oil & gas generation. France, alone in Europe, didn’t subscribe fully to the widespread scaremongering surrounding the nuclear industry in the last few decades – it kept its industry more, or less, intact & now plans a revamp. It plans to build a further fourteen new nuclear reactors in the next twenty years. EDF the nuclear generator is state owned.

The latest Russia/Ukraine situation which poses a threat to Europe by the withdrawal and/or boycott of Russian gas, and, of course, the climate change crisis due to fossil fuels, will probably mean a u-turn by most countries on their no nuclear policies.

Safe nuclear is the only viable way forward if climate change targets are to be met – renewables like wind & wave will contribute, but cannot provide the capacity and reliability needed.

The slaves trade and its repercussions are still with us and not lost in the mists of time. For example it was only in 2015 that the UK gov paid off its debt to for the emancipation of the slaves to the slave-owning families. There is a reason why the establishment/elite don’t want us to know (or think) about the reality of the past and how it affects the present…

Oh, and in case you missed it AT, thanks for the link to Carole Cadwalladr’s twitter on the last thread- I thanked you there as well but it was the last post so you probably missed it:-)

That alleged top soul DJ , Trevor Nelson , did a documentary called Soul Britannia . He had never heard of Northern Soul and was very disrespectful towards it by saying his journey to Wigan had better be worth it.

Will watch my lad play in the Fife Amateurs in a relegation dogfight after that. Of course I will shout myself hoarse in support.

Only one thing will really be on my mind for most of the day though.

Cannot wait for kick off tomorrow at 12 and to be backing Ange and the team to the hilt.

  22. I had a Whatsapp message from Dannybhoy this morning showing a black street vendor in Spain ( I think) singing The Fields and other Celtic related songs. I thought it was excellent and would love it to be played on the big screen at Celtic Park. If I can work out how to post it on here, I will do so. If, however, a more technically savvy CQNer can find it and do the necessary, I am sure it will bring some enjoyment before we start growing nervous/worried/excited about tomorrow!

    Hrvatski Jim,

I agree with you 100% – the only reason the event is taking place in Qatar is the endemic corruption at the top of the game as evidenced by FIFA, UEFA and the other regional football authorities.

I would really love it if a few high profile players refused to go and made their decision public – but I don’t hold out a lot of hope.

  24. Like a few on here I like cricket. I mention this because when I listen to Ange talk he has the same mindset as the Aussie cricket coaches . No matter who they are playing or what the context of the match they are always positive, it’s always about how they are going to play in a match. They’re not bothered whether it’s at home or a ‘Bunsen’ in India, that’s one for the diehards.

This doesn’t mean they always win but they always seem prepared and competitive. It’s a complete contrast to how the English prepare for games and us too. Let’s face it our first thoughts about a visit to ibrokes is usually something negative.

His philosophy has definitely got through to the Celtic players and it’s slowly working on us. A win there and we’re all converts for good.

All history should be kept under review, not just British history.

Fortunately there are people who do that. They are called historians.
