Tactical masterclass

207

What a great game of football.  Brugge dominated from kick-off by figuring out how to block Celtic into submission.  The game was 10 minutes old before we had possession for more than a few seconds.  By contrast, Celtic were unable to return the block as Brugge regularly passed the ball out from the back.  The visitors had done their homework and tactically dominated the first half.  Celtic prepared for the last game they played, not this one.

Brugge have now twice benefited from a bizarre goal in this season’s Champions League.  Their penalty against Aston Villa was, if anything, more ridiculous than Cameron Carter-Vickers passing the ball into his own net.  The difference between the Villa mistake and last night’s was that Brugge forced the issue at Celtic Park.  Carter-Vickers was the fourth Celtic player in possession pressed across the field, as Brugge hunted for a mistake.  Bizarre, yes, but it was worked for and deserved.

The subdued Celtic Park crowd waited for Brendan Rodgers to make the necessary changes.  When they arrived just before the hour, it took very little time for Brugge to be knocked off their tactical perch.

Alex Valle struggled for the first moments of his substitute appearance against Leipzig earlier this month.  The contrast with last night could not be greater.  He was composed on the ball, held onto it, drew opponents in and moved.  A minute after coming on, he found Daizen Maeda, who scored an absolute peach from a tight angle, in what is becoming Celtic Champions League tradition – it went in off the far post.

Great games, like this one, don’t all need lots of chances.  Brugge (and I) thought they had restored their lead, but the goal was ruled offside.  Celtic created better openings that the visitors in the final period of the game, but nothing more than edge of the box chances.

Brugge boss, Nicky Hayen, takes a great deal of credit.  Not many young managers from comparable leagues will come to Celtic Park and out-plan Brendan Rodgers like this.  Brendan can also take credit for mapping out the changes just before the hour.

I also really liked the way the Bulgarian referee controlled the game.  He let play flow and I didn’t disagree with a single foul or caution.  He was also quick to get involved if he saw a hint of timewasting, and was so effective at this, there was little added time at the end of either half.

  1. Club Brugge is 24th in the UEFA ranking grouped around clubs like Ajax, Juventus, Milan, Napoli, Lazio, Frankfurt, Sevilla and Feyenoord.

We are 63rd on 28 coefficient points

They were a pot 2 club; we were bottom of pot 3.

The notion that we were favourites is fanciful, even at home.

Yes, I was disappointed with our performance especially in the first half but just staying in that game and getting any point from any team in a pot above us is satisfactory. That is not what we have been accustomed to seeing most of this century.

Zagreb are above us on 47 points but 36% (17) of their points were from 20/21.

Young Boys are only 1/2 a point behind us

Aston Villa are on 24 points, so behind us, but they have gathered 17 of those last season and 7 already this season.

Not until next winter and, even then, not as good as before, £200 or £300 for those on qualifying benefits and £100 everyone else. Better than nothing I suppose.

  4. james imho, has that maturity thing now that he is a great decison maker with what to do with the ball, knows when to run or when to pass, he is excellent at it.

The Celtic netting doesn’t shrink to fit inferior clubs.

because i am dead boring, i took a good look at the construction element of this at halftime, the storage bags are fixed to the steel corner of the south east stand roof, pretty simple but clever design for the verticals, and the netting.

i was looking at the lisbon lions roof as well, and the side panels structure, just imagining could a top tier continuation be done, and i came to the conclusion again, with limited experience, thhat it couldnt be done with removing part of the main stand roof.

boring i know, but the half time draw was finished.

  6. very proud after the display last night. Brugge got corners but not much else. When calmac realised he was being marked out of the game by a long legged bassa , he orchestrated every around him to make an angle to then get a ball through to kuhn aj etc.

Hatate was a bit stage struck.

I can’t remember a set of subs coming onto euro games and settling so quickly and changing up.

I love watching bernardo without possession, he drifts in and out of space to annoy the opposition.

It’s so good not to be afraid of CL games.

    Thanks board and BR

Lots of well made points – some thought us favourites to win because of the Leipzig performance, but most, including me, had us down not to be beaten, and that’s because we are growing as a team.

Plenty to play for and no fear factor – we’ll either qualify, or, we won’t. We’re giv8ng a better account in Europe whilst remaining on top at home. The squad has been improved and is more balanced – finances are strong and we could unload and sign in January.

Celtic is in a good place, in good hands and is confident going forward . Hail Hail!

I’m glad we had the good sense to use the new Sevco safety netting for the Bruges FC supporters, from what I saw of them, they deserved it.

The ‘new’ stadium is already 30 years old, and the last of its kind, it was hardly a Fergus McCann folly logistics and cost dictated, but the stadium arena will be one day be more spherical.

Dull maybe, but not boring .

Rod’s a great ambassador for Celtic

    ———————–

Of course he is – Football is showbiz now, so they will cover big stars from elsewhere going to games – e.g.Mick Jagger at Arsenal, Ed Sheerin at Ipswitch & the Gallaghers at Man City – also been going on in US sport for years on a bigger scale. HH

To be an ambassador you need to be known as being a supporter of the club. In mick jaggers case there’s little or no evidence

    ———-

Not saying he’s any kind of ambassador, but he does get snapped and filmed whenever he attends games – most recently with his small son.

Now for something completely different, but related.

Cameras now forensically scan attendees at games – so why those who “hurt Celtic” with fines, bans and pyrotechnics can’t be identified, matched to their season card and ‘excommunicated’ beats me.

As we know shoplifting is no longer dealt with by the police, leading businesses to go down the civil court route to get redress. Now many big stores are installing Face Recognition Technology to identify known offenders as soon as they approach and /or enter the premises . Perhaps this system could be adapted and used to pass details to police when illegal and dangerous pyrotechnics are used. Total face – covering should be banned in public arenas as is the case in banks for instance when crash- helmets and the like must be removed.

Where there’s a will there’s a way – technology provides clubs with the opportunity and the means, but where is the motivation? HH

  18. The game last night reminded me of the Vojvodina quarter final many years ago. They were a goal up from the game at their ground. But the Celtic support expected the team to sweep the Slavs aside – because that’s what Celtic did.

Not so. Vojvodina went toe to toe with Celtic right up till the last minute. The lesson then was the same as it is now: there are no soft touches at this level.
