Tactically aware athlete needed

2217

I don’t know anything about Stefan Johansen, who is one of several central midfield players Celtic are tracking, but I’m pleased we’re scouting for this area.  There’s no question we are missing a penalty box predator but you could make a case that the sense of calm and control exerted by Victor Wanyama in the middle of the park is a more telling absence.

Nir Biton has all the potential to get there eventually but it’s going to take him time.  He reminds me of Ki, who a couple of seasons ago was fifth choice central mid for Celtic, behind Brown, Wanyama, Ledley and Kayal.  This season I’ve watched him collect and distribute, close space and bring shape to a struggling Sunderland team.

I’ve also watched a bit of Barry Robson since his return to Aberdeen.  Despite his advancing years he remains one of the most intelligent footballers in the game.  His arrival in the Celtic midfield six years ago changed Celtic into a winning team.    You don’t need Pele for this role, just a tactically aware athlete.

How many accountants does it take to tell you that losing circa £1m per month is not a good idea?  Lots, apparently.

  1. Thanks for the match commentaries last night everyone – sounded a really good game.

Anyone read the Turkish match reports out of interest?

Also, with all the talk of the youngsters getting more match time between now and the end of the season, would it not make sense to give more match time to players in positions that will be vacated by those off to the World Cup? I would think that the WC players will be given an extended vacation, and with the CL qualifiers in July – it would be important to have a settled team?

  2. Why all the elation on here?

Did Sevco get a secret leg up to the top division over the weekend?

We are constantly being told this is why there is disillusion and apathy among Celtic supporters.

    Another SMSM myth debunked.

The fans from ireland england and up north attend matches at great cost flights hotels etc are booked when fixtures are announced.

The fixture was cancelled late by Celtic.

I think the tournament was a great experience for the youngsters btw..

  4. On radio news à moment ago…”it’s back to the drawing board for a young Celtic team after being beat on penalties by Galatasaray at the weekend”

    Aye ok mrs.

  5. Wow…how good were those kids last night, awesome performance

Nir Biton is a player, Liam Henderson was great, gonny be a good yin that lhad

Really cheered me up seeing those kids battle a good Gala team, NL must be proud of his lhads.

I thought Derk was slightly better than usual, theres something there ok, but I think he needs to be toughened up a bit.

Overall, its great to see kids play for the jersey, you can tell how much it means to them

Hail Hail Lhads, you were brilliant.

Morning all the performance and youngsters were a tonic from the run of the mill. However we cant complain when irish fans and those further afield dont buy season books when the club itself is treating them poorly. Enough games are shunted around for tv anyway without Celtic doing the same. Its a full weekend to come from ireland by bus or extra cost to fly. These fans will feel like cash cows and I feel our plc take them for granted not all are like the irish raj and have private planes!

It’s not just far-travelled fans who are put out by the cancelled Killie game.

I live in west-central Scotland and take my young children to games; none of us will be able to make the re-scheduled match.

Any argument about the trip being in the bigger interests of the club is pure conjecture.

  8. Interesting observation from DR report on yesterday’s game…

…”Giant flags, colourful flares, noisy punters. Just what you’d expect, really.”

Yes, the flares were colourful. Almost as if they were fun, adding to the atmosphere and posing no danger.

Totally wrong of course but slightly different to the way they described them at Fir Park a few weeks ago. Wonder why?

  9. The press this morning is reporting that Sami has been told to give us a decision …

Haven’t heard anything about the meeting with Joe Ledley’s agent last Tuesday. Probably not good news – if we was signing a new contract I’m sure we would have heard by now.

Barbara Berlusconi has declared thay yesterdays result is unacceptable and that a change has to made today . Media are claiming that Allegri will be sacked today and he will be replaced by Inzaghi..

Disappointed that you are feeling like that. I still love going to see my team and that is in no small measure to do with meeting such luminaries as yourself.

Re Fletcher. We certainly don`t need him in the SPFL and I am far from convniced that he would make a telling difference in the Champions League. I have faith in the young guys……even if Lennie seems a tad careful about playing them.

Would agree that it is difficult to keep winning if the team is chopped and changed.

Not really my point though. What I was alluding to is if we have youth team players who are competent enough to hold their own against Galatasary and Liverpool then instead of bringing in the Banguras and Rogics of this world we should be giving them their heads and a decent chance to show what they can do in the first team.

Let’s just say you are correct and that PLs (or any other execs bonus) is directly related to income – and nobody outwith the people involved knows the precise details of the contract – not all of the income from these games are going into their bonus pot.

So in summary what you are saying is that you’d rather the club took in less money than these people get a bonus for getting us into money generating friendlies. Money that can go towards improving the team.

Or is it just that a fixture was moved to do so? So in your opinion a competitive fixture should never be moved for anything other than another competitive fixture.

I have sympathy with the second view but at the same time given the paucity of the tv revenues for this club I do think they should be doing whatever they can to ease some of the financial burden on the fans. If this tournament goes someway towards helping eg a ST frieze then that would be a good thing, would it not?

  19. Stefan Johansen looks a much more creative type of player than

Joe Ledley, but plays the same left mid position. Could be one in, one

    out.

Similarly we’re waiting on Samaras before we can decide to buy another

player, probably a striker. one in, one out.

Still buzzing after yesterday and when you look at the ages of our more “established” battalion of Matthews, Forrest, Biton, Van Dijk, Balde and at this stage I’d be adding Darnel Fisher to the “established” bhoys. Now we have the new Thurks of Herron, Fraser, O’Connell, Chalmers & Henderson. Don’t forget Tom Rogic and young Callum McGregor strutting his stuff down in Notts County and yes there is a 16 yr prodigy called Calvin Miller hanging around as well. Islam Feruz Eff off you are surplus to requirements.

Still like to see us make cheeky bid for houlihan. Villa reported to be keen

  24. Amazed at the hype over a good ‘friendly’ performance. Contrast it with the ‘blasé’ when we get gubbed in a meaningless friendly.

I remember Dylan McGeouch as a then nineteen year old more than holding his own against a near full strength Real Madrid team in Philadelphia. Dylan McGeouch looked liked he belonged, since then how many projects have we brought in, in his position?

I watched a terrific documentary movie at the weekend, all about Jeremy Lin and ‘Linsanity’, there are not many, if any, parallels between Jeremy Lin and Dylan McGeouch, but all the way through the movie Dylan McGeouch was in my mind.

  25. Bi polarity is a wonderful thing .

    The fixture will be fulfilled.

So you’re saying the club shouldn’t seek ways to maximise revenue that’s independent of existing tv deals and the fanbase – remembering that the club did almost nothing to advertise this to the fans or suggest they should go to the games.

That point of view is fine, as long as there’s no suggestion of penny pinching on transfers or wages from here on in. You can’t have it both ways.
