Taking a pop at Celtic, vulnerable Heynckes

403

I’m not going to tell you it’s right to post tickets by Special Delivery, or pass on a £7 charge, because I know many would, if given the choice, opt to take their chance on regular mail, with a lower (or zero) charge. The value of Special Delivery only really kicks in when your tickets have yet to arrive but all your pals have theirs. Which isn’t going to happen to all of us.

What I will draw to your attention is the gleeful rush to print an inaccurate story that the club gave fans no option to collect tickets in person, thereby forcing them to pay a Special Delivery charge, running in one of the country’s newspapers of Record yesterday.

There are probably upwards of 100 decisions made by Celtic each week. While clearly the club get most right, they absolutely get some wrong and others remain open to debate. If you are going to have a pop, at least pick on something they’ve actually done, not something you are fantasising about.

Or seriously upgrade your fantasies. Having to write, “Earlier we wrongly reported there was no option to collect from Celtic Park but you can in fact pick up from the club ticket office” is just demeaning.

Jupp Heynckes (72) looks like getting the job of preparing Bayern Munich for the Celtic doubleheader. There’s little Heynckes doesn’t know about the game, but despite his successes, he’s always struck me as an unlucky manager.

He was the man who ended Real Madrid’s wilderness decades when in 1998 he won their first Champions League since 1966, but was sacked days later. He exacted revenge over Real when at Bayern in the 2012 Champions League semi-final, but blew the final in the Allianze on penalties to Chelsea.

That defeat did for him, although Bayern took most of the following season before announcing he would be replaced by Pep Guardiola in the summer of 2013. Heynckes duly destroyed Guardiola’s Barcelona on the way to winning another Champions League, before the door hit him on his bum on the way out.  Despite his glories, a vulnerability surrounds him.  This is a Champions League winner you can look in the eye and sack, apparently.

I hope that vulnerability remains for a few weeks yet.

NEW CQN PODCAST FROM CELTIC PARK ON SATURDAY

Kevin Graham is back with a new CQN Podcast from Saturday. He talks to supporters on the bus on the way to Parkhead, interviews John Paul Taylor outside the ground and captures the atmosphere and action inside the ground before getting some more supporters’ views on the bus home after an eventful afternoon at Celtic Park.

Apologies for a few sweary words in this podcast near the end.

No worries Big Packy. Didn’t for a moment think you were being sectarian. There were times when I would have baulked ar Celtic signing someone who had allegiances to the Dark Side. I was just saying that I have tried to move on, be a better person and if anyone wants to play for Celtic, I won’t question or worry about their previous allegiances. Such wisdom comes with old age, Grasshopper :-))

  4. DD,

No sure about that….mibbe we’re just astonished when a ref does his job without fear or favour ;-))

    FFS,

are we, who accept that we’re a club open to, still debating the merits of some of our best players (icons) religious preferences…..this place would go bonkers if a world class Yazidi adherent signed for us…..jist saying ;-))

Always though KTF was in our team ;-))

Standing joke when someone posts in capital letters.

  6. I’m no having any o those Yazidis in the Celtic team, ya bam! ……………………………………………………………

Only kidding:-)) Hail! Hail! to the Yazidis!

  7. KT is a fabulous player he’s clearly not suited to the position of RB. He may damage his growing reputation if he continues to play out of position, he’ll certainly receive no thanks from the msm.

At RB he clearly looks very limited.

Fair enough. I didn’t see the pictures so couldn’t judge that. He must get a bit skunnered p!aying out of position all the time.

I agree. Desire and willingness to perform to their best for Celtic trumps any childhood allegiances.

    “Oh,Alfie,Alfie.

He used to be a hun but he’s alright now!”

Any doubts I had about him were dispelled for good when he hit the inside of the post at Ibrox from about 40 yards. Outstanding in 76/77 too.

  12. Big Packy,

A post consisting of all capital letters is viewed as joke shouting….take yer Caps lock off ;-))

  13. KT is filling a space at the moment as Scotland have no one else to play at RB. Paterson was playing there until his injury, he will be back by the next campaign and KT will move to the other problem position in the team, centre half, for the next campaign. The reason, he’s the best defender Scotland has, no matter where he plays. Not his best game tonight, but he’s still very young at international level and learning.

  14. My over riding concern during international weeks is the welfare of Celtic players .

After watching the game , thank the Lord for Brendan Rodgers being Celtic manager .

He’s educated the players and the fans .

I remember when Alfie signed for us, my mammy commented he is too hairy for us and played for them. Hope he gets a shave and haircut if he wants to be a Celtic player and see the light. :-))

  16. KT playing RB is a boon for his long term career.

Taking him out his comfort zone, setting him new challenges and testing him mentally and physically will do him no harm.

Whatever position he eventually settles into he will be better for the experience he is gathering.

Agree with you 100%. Kieran is a tremendous left back. Sheer class. He looked tired tonight and didn’t look comfortable at right back against a very good team. I want to protect our stars who have a history of being played out of position for Scotland.

  18. Couple of things from the match tonight.

GS should get enormous credit for sticking with what he thought was the best starting eleven and subs.

KT is not a right back but it’s a World Cup qualifier, not a PL match, and he had a really good game, in a position that is not natural to him.

We deserved to win and got a bit of luck, so often it goes the other way.

  19. Big Packy,

    It’s on yer keyboard….somewhere ;-))

    DD,

    Aye….lol ya bam ;-))

    Montreal Bhoy

Totally agree. That is my thoughts about KT.

Danny went to left back to accomodate the FTSFA Mason pick Sandy in Royal Blue. Danny was never at his best at left back. KT is not at his best playing right back.

  21. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Bobby and Delaney’s , I concur with you about Alfie Conn . He was the last piece of the jigsaw for 76/77 team.

He was on a similar wavelength , football wise , to our top 3 players that season, Kenny, Danny and the majestic Pat Stanton.

We have had better seasons but its my favourite as it was the first season I went regularly to our away games with the added bonus of it being Danny and Kenny’s finest season in the hoops.

  22. Jinky was played out of position to accommodate Willie Henderson, Bobby Murdoch to accommodate John Greig, Davie Hay to accommodate Sandy Jardine. The only country to play its best players out of position: Scotland!

  23. weet weet weet on

    Well done Scotland

    One more result to go

    Fingers crossed
