Taking the foot off the pedal talk

1410

The count of how many times I’ve heard “I hope we don’t take the foot off the pedal like we did last year” has reached double figures. This is never a good sign. Football games, against any level of opponent, need to planned for and respected.

During last season’s League Cup semi-final, Celtic went two goals up early on, then made 100% sure the result would never be in danger by denying Newco even an attempt at goal (the match stats recorded one attempt, which was actually a wayward cross from a free kick). Compare and contrast with Borussia Dortmund’s two goal advantages last night. While I’d love to score a barrel-load, winning the game is all that really matters.

We have seen enough Celtic teams dominate possession in Europe against less-resourced teams only to lose to the sucker punch. This has been a harsh lesson, which I hope has been learned.

I doubt many of us know what to expect from Newco. They won the Championship but this season didn’t have to contend with vastly superior Hearts team. They are also in the semi-final because they thumped Premiership Dundee 4-0 at Ibrox, which is a huge result for any lower league team (we’ve failed to score twice against Dundee recently).

All my “Rangers” supporting pals tell me they are hopeless at defending, so there’s a decent possibility they will defend deeply and play on the break – just as several others have done effectively against us this season. We’re going to have a lot of possession in the final third, but Scott Brown and Nir Bitton will need to offer a lot of defensive cover.

Most of all, we’ll need discipline. There’s a red card winging its way to the first Celtic player to stare at an opponent in a rash manner. The First Minister will probably get involved too, so be prepared.

Did you read Walter “dare I say it, 10 in a row” Smith? What a man to have in your corner days before a big game. He’ll have them thinking it’s 1957 all over again!

A couple of things to consider should CKR start.

One, CKR has never been sent off…despite what everyone thinks of his persona.

Two, on one hand he might let Tavernier free reign to attack. However I would suggest, if CKR cheats, I.e doesn’t track back, then this will play on Taverniers mind. Because if we gain possession of the football, and Tav is caught out of position, CKR will be our target for a quick direct out ball.

This will leave the sevco defence stretched. With 3 defenders , kiernan, Wilson, Wallace struggling to cope with CKR, Griffiths, Roberts.

Roy Croppie , thanks for the photos from our league winning game at Easter Road in 1977.

It was the first league winning game I attended.

I was delighted that Pat Stanton got his medal collection completed that season with us. He like , Bobby Murdoch and Bertie Auld, did not receive the amount of caps they deserved.

One of Pat’s sons is a huge Celtic fan as a result of his dad’s too short a time with us.

Alfie Conn was on a similar wavelength, football wise, to Danny , Kenny and Pat . We had the makings of another good team with George McLuskey and Tommy starting to play more but losing Kenny then Pat along with Alfie in the first game the following season plus Danny a few months later, were huge blows we couldn’t recover from.

going to see him at Croke Park, end of May,

He puts on a great show.

Went to see him at Kilkenny a couple of years ago,pal of mine was working security at the gig ,got us right up to the area at the front of the stage

    What a great performer

  4. Ruggyman, Tavernier is impressive going forward but Can’t defend if we put Roberts on his wing, he will terrorise him.

I just have a feeling that Kris is the man for this game, but I do expect that Ronny will start with CKR.

I really don’t think it matters who starts for Celtic on Sunday. Any 11 fae our squad would pump this mob rotten.

Roy, my old parish priest gave a few of us a lift to that game at Easter Road.

Let’s just say that after the game Father O’Connell , was not full of forgiveness for Tom Hart’s decision that day.

Thanks also for the photo from the 3 nil win in 1984 against the now defunct club. Two of our goals that night were low down in the corner which McCloy with his long legs, always had trouble getting down to.

The best picture of him was the one in the 4 2 game at Ibrox when Francis McGarvey scored our third goal and McCloy lands on his heid. Still makes me laugh all these years since .

Self serve machines in Mcdonalds in USA will replace 1000’s of jobs. Then it will roll out to europe.

Refuse point blank to use self serve machines in fast food and supermarkets as they are replacing real people. One person can man 10 self serve machine in a supermarket. Therefore removing 10 people from the employment equation.

    Technology sucks….

I never knew that CKR had never been sent off, so he is obviously cute enough to know how far he can push things, always a first time tho :-)

Said last week after the Well game, that I would love to see him ragdoll the hun defence and I stand by that, cos he will given the chance.

I don’t buy the he will get sent off pish, they are crapping themselfs that he plays and shows their defence up imo.

We were in an industrial park, saw the McDonalds and thot a bite to eat with their superb coffee would go down a treat, was more taken aback at first then realised that when we couldn’t find a person that we should gtf.

I was just thinking about the NWO stuff today and was trying to work out how if they get their way and reduce the population by billions, how will they make all their money, not needed to worry on that score, they have it all sussed :-)

CKR could easily have been sent off on Saturday at Fir Park. Firstly, I don’t think he deserves a start but I also worry that they’ll deliberately try to wind him up.

  17. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Clunks at 10.22, I totally agree with you re these self service machines .

I refuse to use these machines for the very reasons you stated.

Banks are starting all this mince also.

Anytime I go into a bank of Scotland/ Halifax branch , I’m pounced upon by staff asking me what service I will use , trying to direct me to machines.

The looks on their coupons when I say I’m going to the counter staff, amuses me.

    Another great article.

    http://www.onfieldsofgreen.com/crimes-capers-panama-papers/

    This a load of poppycock..

He states “Dermot Desmond is domicile do in Ireland.”

    He is not!!

Dermot Desmond and many other enterepreneurs such as JP,McManus, Celtic shareholder, Denis O’Brien etc elect to spend less than 183 days per year in Ireland and therefore pay their tax in countries where there is a more favourable rate.
