Tallinn or Gibraltar in Champions League for Celtic

532

Brendan Rodgers will start Celtic’s Champions League trail against Flora Tallin, from Estonia, or Lincoln Red Imps, from Gibraltar, in the tournament’s second qualifying round.

Flora, who are seeded against Lincoln Red Imps, are midseason, but went out in the first qualifying round a year ago to Rabotnicki, from Macedonia (who reached the play-off round before losing narrowly to Russians, Rubin Kazan).

Red Imps won the big (cough) Iberian derby last year when they eliminated Santa Coloma from Andorra, before crashing to Erik Sviatchenko’s Midtjylland.

Neither are the British Isles-based tie Brendan Rodgers would have preferred, travelling arrangements will cost an extra day’s training, but there were far more arduous opponents in the draw.

Games take place on 12/13th July and 19/20th July. The away tie is scheduled first – but you know the drill, don’t book flights until Uefa have ratified match arrangements.

I think that’s the statement issued to him – it does say in the article that the statement was issued to STV.

He doesn’t say it was a statement issued to the requisitioners.

    Por Cierto,

He can stand by whatever he want :)

If UEFA are contradicting themselves that’s their problem not ours :)

They have made some unequivocal declarations in their letter to us :)

As I said I don’t want to go into too much detail, let the statement tell the story, read it a few times there is a lot too it and some of the implication won’t sink in right away :)

It certainly smells of get your revenge in first type thing…

We expect nothing less from STV, the official mouthpiece of Sevco..

Your link to the Dundalk v Celtic game in 1979 brought back a few memories. A guy I knew had a brother who played centre half for Dundalk in the 1950s/60s. His name was John Crowe who was revered in Dundalk. Michael promised to get me tickets for the Celtic game. On the Friday he left one ticket in the office of the school I worked in. I had been expecting ten and was very disappointed. On the same day I had just taken delivery of a photocopier, one of the features of which was that it could reproduce on card. When the ticket was sent to me by the secretary I took a look at it. Possibilities!! Dundalk’s colours were black and white and so was the ticket. Before I left the school on Friday evening I had 40 tickets made up.

A minibus was hired and sixteen of us headed from Belfast to Dundalk at lunchtime. We headed for Noel Gormley’s Bar in Parkmount Street. There I met six guys who were unable to get a ticket so I gifted them some. By kickoff I had distributed them all. The tickets were for a sideline temporary area. We watched the game which was a dinger with Dundalk’s McConville missing a sitter at the end of a goalless draw. Thankfully no-one on the bus was aware that all pour tickets had the same number.

I met Michael the following week. “I don’t understand it. About ten people I met after mass on Sunday thanked me for the free ticket for the Celtic match.”

    Weeminger,

The STV statement identifies ambiguities that don’t exist in the reply to us.

Maybe their statement came from a different source.

  6. “As a consequence of decisions taken against Rangers FC in 2012 as well as the administration of the club and the events and measures that followed (including the club being ineligible to apply for a licence to participate in UEFA competitions for three seasons),

    Decisions taken against Rangers””The administration”,who wrote this,Level 5?.

This statement is absolute nonsense.Obfuscation, and ignoring the real facts of The Resolution.Tell you one thing,to release a ridiculous statement like this shows that they are rattled.Unbelievable.

This post was from “A Troll”residing in Turkey.

  7. CANAMALAR IT LOOKS LIKE OCD OBSESSION on 20TH JUNE 2016 4:01 PM

That’s what I’m getting at. Looks like STV asked specific questions in regards to Res 12 and are spinning the reply to them, as some kind of definitive statement on it, when in fact it’s only a response to their (skewed?) line of questioning.

  8. Seemingly STV’s “Statement from UEFA” is a reply to various detailed emails sent by STV por cierto

  9. Hmm it looks like STV Grant, who I had done as a reasonably intelligent, if misguided chap, has completely failed to understand what Res 12 is actually about.

“Grant Russell ‏@STVGrant 3m3 minutes ago

@FrPaulStone @TheClumpany It has nothing to do with Rangers?! It’s Rangers who had to send the declaration to UEFA on June 30.”

  10. i'vehadtochangemyname on

at least BR knows the level he’s starting at in the CL – still a huge task to take the squad he was left with up to qualifying rounds level – we won’t recognize their names but we’ll be well aware they’ll likely be very savvy, strategically flexible, technically adept and able to convert chances into goals.

  11. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    Weeminger,

Bingo, I’m offski, I don’t want to be drawn into exposing anything further, intended or not, the statement is quite comprehensive.

  12. Think the STV piece is a crock of shit. UEFA saying if Huns were guilty they would have got a 1yr ban, they were out for 3yrs anyway so no need to Investigate the issue.

However as Canamalar has already said that was never the issue.

Re “The same Club” issue, I have never doubted that the Scottish & European Football Authorities would act and keep records on the basis that they are the same Club, there is nothing in it for them to do otherwise.

Forever & ever we will taunt them that they are a New Club but beyond that our concentration should be on Celtic & all things Celtic. Ignore the ugly bigots from Govan and let them stew in their own bile.

    Houl Yer Wheest,

A few of the oldtimers around here used to cross ‘the border’ into the six counties to play the foreign game (soccer) under a false name and come back and still be eligible to play Gaelic.

Fair play for doing the loaves and fishes with the ticket.

I think Noel Gormley is still around, he’s well retired now.

    http://www.independent.ie/regionals/argus/lifestyle/publican-noel-celebrates-sixty-years-in-business-29267939.html

  14. I’ll accept they are the same club, and put my name down on a waiting list for a season ticket, if the UEFA spokesman can tell me when Rangers (1872-2012) successfully agreed a CVA with their creditors which allowed them to exit administration in 2012.

Give Grant his due, he did use the ‘L’ word about Rangers, which means he is admitting that The Rangers is a new club.

Prefer Sevco myself out of respect for the 1986 Insolvency Act, but acceptance that it’s a new club will be enough to be going on with.

  15. Russell Grant……………

Magic Hat wearer………………He can make “controversies” disappear……………………..

    Shameful.

  16. Sounds like STV have decided to get their version of the “truth” out first. Thus muddying the waters for when the actual “truth” emerges..

The Joseph Goebbels school of journalism in action. Tell the big lie often enough and people will start to believe it.

  17. He has received something from UEFA but not willing to offer up what questions he asked por cierto.

  18. It seems to me that UEFA are saying that there was no point in investigating further, if the worst outcome was going to be a one-year European ban.

As Rangers/ Sevco were subsequently banned for three years, any one year ban for ‘outstanding payables’ would be concurrent with it and therefore not increase the length of ban.

“Not investigating” does not mean absolution for Rangers and/or SFA.

Only outstanding item to be argued over is the issue of compensation to other clubs who lost out – that is a civil matter that would have to be pursued through the courts – no Scottish club would have the stomach for this and no doubt it would be resisted by UEFA – “football disputes should stay within football”

I am so glad that Celtic FC chose not to ‘jump feet first’ into this.

The Resolutioners may still feel that they are in the right – however believing you are right and proving it beyond doubt are two very different things.

We are told that Rangers were wrong, SFA were wrong, Newsquest (Herald/Sunday Herald) was wrong, Guardian was wrong and all Scottish media are wrong – they all have been ‘got at’ and that a French language newspaper in Switzerland is the only ‘beacon of truth’ – this may well be the case – but I ‘hae ma doots’

No need to apologise TTT I was roaring France on myself, can’t stand Switzerland, the team or the country:))

Watched it myself and was impressed by Pogba, also saw that durty cheatin bassa lichtscheidtner pulling an elbows/luther thompson in faking injury after breenging intae Laurent Koscielny who was booked for nuthing, no wonder he looked surprised.

  20. If this is correct my interpretation of the statement based on the following ‘no case to answer as they were ineligible to compete in European competitions during that three-year period in any case following their financial implosion’ is :

    Q. Why were they ineligible ?

    A. They didn’t have 3 years of accounts.

    Q. Why didn’t they have 3 years of accounts ?

    A. They are new.

    So say UEFA.

    Pretty clear to me !

    So a club that is not in a position to apply for a License is equal to a club that is in a position to apply for a License but gets rejected;

Secondly, a Club that are not in a position to qualify for a UEFA License in 3 season’s is paramount to a club being banned for 3 Years?

What was the name of the UEFA delegate that clarified this position – Hugh Dallas?

Noel is some character! A Tyrone man he served his time in the pub trade in Belfast.

He had a pub on Manor Street in the Oldpark area of Belfast called He Meeting of the Waters? He was threatened by loyalists. He used to stand at the door of the pub with a butchers cleaver behind his back and tell them to come in.

Eventually he moved south and had a bar in Castlebellingham which was a stopping place for us coming back from Croke Park.

His wife said she was homesick. Noel said he could cure that easily. He said he would fire a few shots over the roof.

Later he moved to Dundalk. He knew how to run a pub.

  23. The Battered Bunnet on

Grant Russell has been open in chasing UEFA for comment and questions on Res 12 for some time, and fair play to him for that.

Given UEFA has responded to the questions asked by the requisitioners, and have subsequently responded to Grant’s questions with a related statement, it’s a little unfortunate that ownership of the agenda has been lost to STV.

Human nature abhors an information vacuum, and the media’s job is to fill it. The media is seldom concerned with the quality of the filler.

  24. My friends in Celtic,

I have read the UEFA statement on STV a few times now.

I am confused . This does not seem an answer to Res 12.

To anybody not familiar with Res 12 on Twitter or CQN this issue is becoming increasingly cloudy.

    HH.

  25. mullet and co 2 on

If that’s the answer from UEFA it isn’t an answer.

Where Rangers incorrectly awarded a licence in 2011/12?

    Yes or No?

An answer of it doesn’t matter is not yes or no but it is slanted towards yes.

If it was simply no it was not incorrect then why not just say so.

To say we will not investigate when they clearly already have is further massaging of truth.

  26. Will await the res 12 bhoys communication with interest…

I believe stvgrant has been asking questions for weeks. Timing is everything in issuing a reply?

It seems that the resoloutioners have been sitting on a response from UEFA, but it’s not clear whether that response was to them or to Celtic.

But they do seem to have lost the initiative.

The problem is that as Mark Twain said “A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.”

  28. mullet and co 2 on

Having read again, I can only surmise that UEFA are saying Rangers are a Newco therefore no point in investigating further the punishment Rangers would have received.

    The repercussions for SFA?
