For decades, some of us have wondered why we have been unable to develop a striker capable of regularly holding down a place in the team. While this remains so, we appear to have the magic formula for developing full backs.
Two months after Kieran Tierney left his 20s behind, Calvin Miller (19) and Anthony Ralston (18) look to have been hued from the same tree as the much-celebrated Tierney. And by the look for the three of them, that tree is oak. There is a physicality to them, which sets them apart from years of scrawny, but skilful, hopefuls.
I know the opposition was only Kilmarnock on Saturday, but Tierney came through a similar school only two years ago, marking his progress at the same staging posts.
Part of this apparent success may be explained by the fact that Miller (and Tierney, for that matter), was not always a full back. Calvin first emerged as a striker, but instead of burning out waiting for his chance there, was reprogrammed as a defender.
Celtic, and much of the world, had a vacancy at left back for years; we were always on the lookout. We targeted this position through the development system, which explains where the success has come from.
We might never be able to produce a top striker, but we have tolerate that if we are able to produce top talents elsewhere on the field.

The SFA should replace Strachan with a proper hun. Then no Celtic players will get picked…
My friends in Celtic,
Callum McGregor is the most improved player at Parkhead.
His ommision from the Scotland squad is obviously not a footballing decision. To see some of the players included in comparison to Callum is just ludicrous.
The bhoy must be sickened. Me, sad to say, i’m losing interest in the Scotland team.
HH.
Just had a request from Catach’s brother who is off to Krakow. Can anyone suggest a pub where he can watch the game tomorrow evening?
Ffs how long was I sleeping for ?????.
Kieran’s left his 20’s behind him.
Are we going for 17 in a row????
How many zombie teams have there been in that time. ?????
Did we ever get wee Paddy????
Stuff awe that I’m away for a lie doon again.
H.H
In spite of everything, I still want Scotland to win. I also want every Celtic player to be an International but I am conflicted when it comes to our players representing Scotland. They have been so abused or simply passed over in the past, that I have no respect for the SFA or their supporters. Besides that, I don’t want our players exhausted. Even without the Internationals, we play a lot more games than the others.
Paul,
spell check – Hewed might be better than hued. You never know though ;)
Hell mend Gordon Strachan. “I didn’t come to Celtic as a supporter, but I left as one”
Aye, right!
GREENPINATA @ 1:44 PM,
Yes, I think you are right, there will be a glass ceiling on the amount of Celtic Players in a Scotland Squad and First Choice picks.
We have seen the various permutations and we know WGS likes to be loyal but there is a few in there who despite the odd cameo have never cut it at International Level. No doubt Callum McGregor is being sacrificed as we would see a Scotland Midfield full of Celts/ex-Celts.
We (Scotland) need six points from the next two matches but that squad is good enough and should do that.
What about our next “must” win game? Hope common sense prevails and Gordon picks the best team – even if the majority do come from Scotland’s invincibles:(
Hail Hail
DAVIDOPOLOUS,
The BBC were doing their Level best yesterday to line up McLeish to replace WGS. He was open to the idea…..!!! You’d think he’d do the decent thing and disappear like Ogilvie, given that he too is an EBTer.

I’d love Big Eck to get the gig so that one final nail can be hammered into his carter’s coffin.
He’d have Lee McCulloch playing left wing again…
Carter’s? Career’s obviously.
Reporting Scotland :
Gordon Strachan thinks it is a good thing that he cam call on players who will ( probably ) be playing in the Champions League. The two teams involved are Celtic and Liverpool who have seven players in the Scotland squad — six from Celtic and one from Liverpool. The chosen clip to highlight this fact showed the one Liverpool player.
The MSSM grows ever more dreadful.

My Dad and I were privileged to be at St Kevin.
As were we all.
Bearing in mind we were watching an U-16 tournament.
We were all stunned by the skill and confidence of the wee fella, but as my Dad pointed out,too wee.
Never gonna make it in this modern game at that size. Which I agreed with.
Then we discovered he was only 13,four years above his age group.
Aye,that boy has it all.

Know the Bar Nilo well . . L’altarino for Maradona is wowee kitsch . . I like the wee glass case with a lock of his hair. Like a relic of a Saint.
Note you have Napoli in your group of death . I wouldn’t put money on them qualifying . 2 up v Nizza , could have won by 5 / 6 but were their habitual profligate self . Lots of previews re Nizza v Napoli on the tele — lots of Napoli should but we know what they are like -stuff .. One pundit’s view —
” play the best football in Italy but they are very prone to over playing and blowing it . Spectacular team but not always a winning team “
They’re even saying over on FF (reluctantly) Callum McGregor should be in the Scotland squad.
Big (f)Eck’s career’s been on a downward trajectory since after his career high performance as Rocky Dennis. ;)
He got to work with Cher though.

There’s so much envy from them that they’re greener than us. ;)
Callum not in the bestest SFA Hoots squad? Fantastic! Pity there is a wheen of others though. Seriously Broony, just retire.
IMO, I think in the idea of stripping the titles is asking the wrong questions of the wrong people.
We should be putting our energies into stripping the blazers first.
Kind of along the lines of “politik”. In this case simpering politicians are the hun and the world banks are the blazer and brogue brigade.

They must’ve see his tattoo…. ;-))))
Sad to say about the country you were born and grew up in, but I have no interest in the Scotland football team. You only have to look at their record of failing to select Celtic players to know they have another agenda. Players that were selected have been roundly abused. Their failure over the last few years is of their own making.

Don’t want any of our Bhoys playing for the sfa in anyway shape or form, if we did want to boycott, this would be the ideal opportunity. Deprive them of 50% of their national team.

Heartily agree, when you see the likes of clogger Greig and McKinnon getting into the Scotland team instead of Big Billy and Bobby Murdoch, would be happy to see no Celts in the squad.

Big Wave,Why Henderson,?

Bottom of the midfield pile, too many in front of him and I think Brendan prefers others. Would be a good SPFL player and I expect him to go to a Hibs, Aberdeen or the like….

Couldnae develop a striker? Aye,you’re probably right.
Nicholas and George McCluskey were probably the last ones who were any use.
Simon Donnelly on Easter Sunday 1996 certainly wasn’t.
But,tell you what,we were pretty damn good at identifying who could do the job.
Not a home-bred striker since,say,83?
Not a problem. We’ve had some gems since.
IMO,the best was McClair. We can argue about Henrik,Cadete,Sutton,et al.
But.
40 goals a season for four years and £70k works for me.
No matter what any on here think, every footballer wants to play for his country, and rightly so.The fact that we have a shower of Trumpets running our game matters not a jot to any player when they run onto the park.
think the yound lad aitchison is developing well as a striker
The fitba’ news seems to be dominated by the omission from the Scotland squad of Callum McGregor.
Is this the lowest key build-up to any Champions League, final qualifying, second leg tie, imaginable?
After midday Big Ben will fall silent for 4 years due to essential maintenance. I suppose they’ll be working around the clock
Callum isn’t a first pick for Celtic.
There’s the answer.

Hi Almore & Cloughercelt
There are several branches of Comhaltas in Scotland.
The Irish Minstrels/St. Rochs, St. James the Great in Glasgow, Johnny Doherty Holytown/New Stevenson and my home group St. Patricks Coatbridge.
I have friends in Drochaid Atha branch. So looking forward to the big Feadh next year. Will be there for the craic agus ceol, maybe competing even, you never know. Also another visit to Bru na Boinne/Sid in Broga on the banks of the sacred river Bo Fhinne Boanna.

You could say the same for Armstong!!! Personally, i think by christmas our first choice midfield is Broonie, Eboue and of course Ntcham, not to shabby to have Mcgregor, Armstrong, Rogic to call on either.
Good Afternoon.
Here is something new. About EBT recipients being given a platform to talk pish…
