Targeting development on the left back slot

365

For decades, some of us have wondered why we have been unable to develop a striker capable of regularly holding down a place in the team. While this remains so, we appear to have the magic formula for developing full backs.

Two months after Kieran Tierney left his 20s behind, Calvin Miller (19) and Anthony Ralston (18) look to have been hued from the same tree as the much-celebrated Tierney. And by the look for the three of them, that tree is oak. There is a physicality to them, which sets them apart from years of scrawny, but skilful, hopefuls.

I know the opposition was only Kilmarnock on Saturday, but Tierney came through a similar school only two years ago, marking his progress at the same staging posts.

Part of this apparent success may be explained by the fact that Miller (and Tierney, for that matter), was not always a full back. Calvin first emerged as a striker, but instead of burning out waiting for his chance there, was reprogrammed as a defender.

Celtic, and much of the world, had a vacancy at left back for years; we were always on the lookout. We targeted this position through the development system, which explains where the success has come from.

We might never be able to produce a top striker, but we have tolerate that if we are able to produce top talents elsewhere on the field.

Anyone know if MacIntyre is on a bonus for every time he has a dig at Ronny?

If he was as bad at his job as MacIntyre is at his we’d be in division two!

Rangers fans have hit out after the club supporters’ liaison officer revealed banners covering the iconic glass aren’t temporary.

Fans had believed they were erected to cover up work being done on the glass. But when asked how long they would be in place the club’s SLO said: “No set time period on them. Sorry but they are not up due to repair works.”

Are they only up due to repair works? If not, I’m disappointed.

It led to fans taking to Twitter to slam the decision to cover up the glass, which is at the stairways leading up to the club deck.

Graeme Craig tweeted: “Surely they aren’t up because someone thinks they are a good idea and look good? They are horrendous.”

Another fan, Laura, tweeted: “This is bad news. The glass staircase is an integral part of Ibrox.”

Craig Bryers tweeted: “Does anyone at all, outside of the board, actually like them? Get them down. They look cheap and nasty. Clean the glass up instead.”

Twitter user Dado said: “Whoever thought that was a good idea shouldn’t be at the club. They clearly don’t get it. Plus, they’re not very good at their job.”

Another user added: “If not please have them removed, absolutely ridiculous to cover up such an iconic part of our stadium.”

Another said: “Hate that they’ve covered the glass staircases. Part of Ibrox’s unique look.”

    Rangers declined to comment.

  12. GARY67 @ 6:31 PM,

Very good points. WGS seems to have a blind spot for his favourites. He has even stated he doesnt know the fitness levels or form of some players and has named a larger squad to compensate.

I sincerely hope that this squad gets Scotland Six points in the next two games.

Of course it depends who plays but they won’t get the Six points we need against Slovenia and Slovakia.

So why not pick the known, capped, in-form guys who are playing regularly, then give some real prospects a chance? And maybe we could have a forward looking squad for the crucial October games.

I’m not optimistic but hope we win those matches and qualify.

    But then what?

Well Brendan Rodgers is changing the way Scots are looking at the game. The fact that he revolutionised what was mainly RD’s team have made people sit up and take notice. The fact he can rotate the squad, put out a young team and play virtually the same and win the points has also been noticed.

He has stated quite clearly that he is playing a European game and not a Scottish game ~ remember when the perceived wisdom was this couldn’t be done you needed one style in Scotland and one in Europe? ~ He also lambasted Hearts for not backing a young forward looking Coach.

If the penny drops, a new, young, quality Coach will take the reigns of the National Team and will have at least half a dozen Celts that can play this system at a high level.

It should be obvious to any Scottish Football Observer that this is the way forward. It’s a National Team I’d love to see.

Of course with the SFA Blazers Clueless and the SMSM believing McLeish could be the answer we could find ourselves watching English Championship reserve, substitutes for another generation:(((

They are usually quiet up my way. However, about a month ago, i jumped on a bus, wearing the hoops. Two stops later, a halfwit with a King Billy hat gets on. I go to get off the bus, as i pass, he says, ‘F the IRA’. I grabbed the scabby cap right off his head, jumped off the bus, and threw it over a hedge. He didnt get off the bus:). As it drove off, he was raging. I gave him the fingers:)

It would be no scandal up here, EBT’s and their recipients which is now deemed illegal are not asked anything about these, we know why, the Fat controller issuing orders, I liked Gordon Strachan for most of his tenure I think he cared about the club but to say today RFC and Celtic had 10 players in a squad in the past is just that the past, I am losing respect for the wee guy it is nothing more than trying to keep them relevant, his reasoning was also suspect learnng to cope with travel, get stuffed with that rubbish Gordon. In my opinion its a pity Broonie has now gone back to play for the SFA.
