Targeting development on the left back slot

365

For decades, some of us have wondered why we have been unable to develop a striker capable of regularly holding down a place in the team. While this remains so, we appear to have the magic formula for developing full backs.

Two months after Kieran Tierney left his 20s behind, Calvin Miller (19) and Anthony Ralston (18) look to have been hued from the same tree as the much-celebrated Tierney. And by the look for the three of them, that tree is oak. There is a physicality to them, which sets them apart from years of scrawny, but skilful, hopefuls.

I know the opposition was only Kilmarnock on Saturday, but Tierney came through a similar school only two years ago, marking his progress at the same staging posts.

Part of this apparent success may be explained by the fact that Miller (and Tierney, for that matter), was not always a full back. Calvin first emerged as a striker, but instead of burning out waiting for his chance there, was reprogrammed as a defender.

Celtic, and much of the world, had a vacancy at left back for years; we were always on the lookout. We targeted this position through the development system, which explains where the success has come from.

We might never be able to produce a top striker, but we have tolerate that if we are able to produce top talents elsewhere on the field.

  5. Listening on radio whilst doing some book work, according to the commentator, Rooney cupped his ears after scoring, Manchester police switchboards will be jammed, or maybe not.

  6. Radio commentator makes a long point about Rooney has to play ninety minutes every week to get into the England team, Phil Neville summarising then repeats almost word for word the same point, is there something wrong with him?

Usually avoid the radio , I can just about survive English radio in small dozes. As for tv it’s the sound turned down, find it better for my health.

“It would be no scandal up here, EBT’s and their recipients which is now deemed illegal are not asked anything about these, we know why, the Fat controller issuing orders, I liked Gordon Strachan for most of his tenure I think he cared about the club but to say today RFC and Celtic had 10 players in a squad in the past is just that the past, I am losing respect for the wee guy it is nothing more than trying to keep them relevant, his reasoning was also suspect learnng to cope with travel, get stuffed with that rubbish Gordon. In my opinion its a pity Broonie has now gone back to play for the SFA.

Well, yes, the brass neck of the Scottish Football Administrator is as brazen as it gets.

    The whole shebang needs changing.

But surely with failure after failure it can’t be jobs for the boys again. I seriously don’t believe we ever recovered from the Roxburgh, Brown Years.

And 10 decent players from Celtic and Rangers in a squad? When was the last time that happened? Before Ally’s Army was on the March I’d say.

Still, they have to be mentioned, the Club that participates nothing to the National squad, that’s caused more damage to Scottish Football than the Blazers, Sky, The EPL and UEFA combined has to get a name check.

When Strachan’s tenure comes to an end – and like you, I think he did a good job for us and I hope he ends on a high – but a serious look at the National set up is required.

    Will it happen?

We have for years suspected how the Administrators operate and now we seen how these guys work first hand. Their culture is so ingrained they don’t even see how ridiculous they look. It is difficult to see where the incompetence ends and corruption begins.

It’s interesting that Broonie revived his Scotland career when Brendan came in, I wonder if he thinks International Experience is crucial, or at least important to top Footballers.

Still I’ll always be a Scotland fan but can see why Celtic fans and Some Players care little or nothing for the Team.

    Hail Hail
