Tarnished football brands, Europe recovers, Craig Gordon

555

Lots of credit to the USA and Switzerland, who bowed out of the World Cup in dramatic fashion yesterday, leaving four European and four Latin American teams fighting out for the spoils.  Europe has recovered from its shaky group stage performance, keeping the door open a little longer for smaller European nations.

While plaudits for a fine tournament will be spread far and wide, the tournament has not provided a breakthrough credit for Africa, Asia, or the USA, none of whom will find the going any easier when the bandwagon reaches Eastern Europe four years from now.

Surprised it’s taken this long to get a deal sorted for Craig Gordon.  Considering the player’s lengthy injury history, Celtic have perhaps delayed to allow fitness tests over an extended period.  I’m treating tabloid comment that the potential arrival of Craig is linked to Fraser Forster moving on as idle mischief.  We need three keepers and usually have three, as do most top clubs.

So, a day after Luis Suarez issues a heartfelt mea culpa, Barcelona let it be known they are in talks with Liverpool over acquiring the player.  He is without question one of the most gifted players of our time but the phrase “transparent charlatan” seems appropriate.  Brand Barca is slowly slipping, with tax scams, directorial bungs and contrived contrition.

His actions caused enough dissonance on Merseyside to damage brand Liverpool, he’ll win Barcelona football games but stands a high probability of doing the same in Catalonia.  The commitment to reform is meaningless, as he is not in a position to make good on it.  Yet.

Barcelona led the way on establishing an ethical, aspirational, football brand.  I think they’ve forgotten what I’m hoping we learn.

The 10-in-a-row CQN Charity Golf Day takes place at the magnificent Aberdour course on Friday.  This year we will hear from Celtic legend, Frank McGarvey, and former Glasgow lawyer after dinner specialist, Len Murray.

This year we are raising money for Glasgow the Caring City and The Cookiejar Foundation.  We have two copies of this magnificent canvas, signed by Billy McNeill, one is available to the highest bidder on ebay here.

The other is available for raffle.  Every donor to this JustGiving page gets an entry in the raffle.  The minimum donation is £1, which we can all afford to participate in, although you can donate as much as you want.  Our thanks to @BarryMcGonigle for the image on the canvas and OPG Graphics for creating the work.

Glasgow the Caring City said, “Glasgow the Caring City is Glasgow’s people’s charity.  As well as working with the underprivileged in our own city the charity has delivered literally millions of pounds of overseas aid and development gifts-in-kind on a shoestring budget.

“From educational supplies to soap and medicines, from tents and warm clothes to prescription glasses.  We once delivered a donated fire truck! Having provided emergency relief to war, famine, flood and earthquake victims in the past the charity would love to take this relatively quiet time in terms of world emergency to invest in its development projects, taking children out of war and teaching them in agricultural sustainability projects.

“The support of the CQN community has always been received with huge gratitude, thank you once again for supporting us this year.”  Rev Neil Galbraith.

The Cookiejar Foundation was set up in memory of Christopher Coutts who died from Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at the age of 19.  Money raised from this raffle will go towards the Cookiejar’s providing of vein finders for the Chemotherapy wards at the Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy & cancer wards in the Western General Hospital, Edinburgh.

I don`t think the cheating referee issue has been resurected. I the concern is that `celebrities` can remove uncomplimentary information from Google.

    Dougie has done so.

Neymar is the best player in the Brazil team by some distance. Not in the same league as messi.

I don’t think he was all that bad for barca. But never as good as we were told he was gonna be. Injuries haven’t helped.

That said….I canny stand the wee phud. Never liked him since the banana incident and he’s done nowt to make me change my mind since.

Life is not just about the 90 minutes spent playing football.Neymar has spent an absolute fortune back in his home town building a Lennoxtown style complex for the street kids.As well as coaches, doctors, the complex supplies food for these kids.

Yep maybe you are right,he is an absolute fud.

  10. A couple of things on the blog i disagree with, Craig Gordon is better than Fraser Forster, what a load of nonsense. Fraser’s attitude means he will only get better and go on to become one of the best in Europe unfortunately it wont be with Celtic and i would be looking for min 10M. Craig Gordon, time will tell if he can get back to previous form. I have serious doubts and think he will be best mates with Derk keeping each other company in the treatment room.

Ronny Delia, Ronaldo is better than Messi. What a load of bull, the stats suggest otherwise, with the wee man breaking world records and has only just turned 27.

Can anyone answer why we are downsizing so rapidly given we have reached CL last two years and in the best financial health ever?

  11. Too many pessimists on here.If Celtic after seemingly exhaustive tests think Craig Gordon is fit,is that not enough for you?.You would think that some are actually hoping he gets injured.

Surely not.Whatever could their motive be for this?.

Happy enough with Craig Gordon, free, was a quality keeper, you never lose it, and it’s no as if he will be running about the pitch tackling and the like.

If he is on a pay per play deal, even better, I trust Stevie Woods on this one.

The reaction to the signing of craig Gordon is influenced by two factors

    1. the corner kick. I’d guess this is more of an issue for those who were at the game, because it was remarkable at the time and created a lasting impression.

    2. the concern that FF is being punted and Gordon is his replacement. Most would regard that as downsizing, and the continuation of a trend.

  17. turkeybhoy

I think the worry that some of us have is our recent history of signing a couple of players who it was known were prone to injury, Derk and Steven Mouyokolo.

Despite their injury record both were deemed fit enough to be given contracts and I assume that this was done after detailed medicals.

If we get Gordon for nothing, he remains injury free and plays his part then I’d be delighted.

    I do have reservations though.

  18. Ernie

I was at Tynecastle when Gordon went up for the corner. At the time I was livid and questioned his motives for doing so, I still do.

However, I’m prepared to forget and move on if he signs for Celtic.

  19. Celtic, great to be back.Good luck to Ronny and his team

Your ludicrous rant about Salmond waving the Saltire, and how the SNP lie,is just that, ludicrous. Are you telling us all that the Cons,Labour, any other mob,do not lie?.

Tell you what,I would rather a wee white lie, like the one you are crowing about, than the one about WMD,that was blatantly peddled to the British people so that Blair could back up Bush and invade Iraq, causing countless thousands of deaths.

Of course in your wee world of”Better together”these type of things are irrelevant.

Sometimes I like your posts, sometimes you are an @rse.No offence.

  24. Well, disappointing to report that for the first time in ages, I will not be attending the gowf at Aberdour.

Murphy, my oldest Irish Red & White Setter, was referred by our local Turra vet to a specialist in Aberdeen due to him not moving well (Murphy that is, not the vet or the specialist). He has diagnosed cruciate ligament tears on both knees, and they had a wee look inside one yesterday to confirm the diagnosis. He will be going back next Wednesday to have the left knee ligament moved and pinned, and two weeks after that for the right knee. If we did nothing, the ligaments may snap, leading to so many additional complications.

Poor Murphy is no longer allowed walkies, until a minimum of 4 weeks after the final op. He has to be in his crate at all times, apart from feeding, and expelling the feed later of course! Until the various wounds heal, he has to wear one of those cone-like collars when he is left on his own in the crate, to make sure he doesn’t nibble the stitches.

Cannot leave the boss on her own to deal with this initially, so the golf has been ditched in favour of getting things sorted out for Murph. Ho hum!

To try to keep him from going stir-crazy, we are heading out to buy another XXL crate, this one for the living room. That way he will always have company, won’t have to wear the cone all the time and hopefully feels safe and not lonely. It is heart breaking to see my wee doggie like this, but the alternative is so much worse if a ligament was to snap.

Meanwhile Starsky is . . . . well, just Starsky!

Anyhow, enough of my moaning, would just like to say to all who will be in Aberdour tonight and tomorrow, that I wish you fair weather and wide fairways.

The golf will be so-so (!!), the speakers will be brilliant, the patter and the craic second to none. Remember that you are representing Celtic and CQN, have a great time!

    Hail! Hail!
