Tarnished football brands, Europe recovers, Craig Gordon

555

Lots of credit to the USA and Switzerland, who bowed out of the World Cup in dramatic fashion yesterday, leaving four European and four Latin American teams fighting out for the spoils.  Europe has recovered from its shaky group stage performance, keeping the door open a little longer for smaller European nations.

While plaudits for a fine tournament will be spread far and wide, the tournament has not provided a breakthrough credit for Africa, Asia, or the USA, none of whom will find the going any easier when the bandwagon reaches Eastern Europe four years from now.

Surprised it’s taken this long to get a deal sorted for Craig Gordon.  Considering the player’s lengthy injury history, Celtic have perhaps delayed to allow fitness tests over an extended period.  I’m treating tabloid comment that the potential arrival of Craig is linked to Fraser Forster moving on as idle mischief.  We need three keepers and usually have three, as do most top clubs.

So, a day after Luis Suarez issues a heartfelt mea culpa, Barcelona let it be known they are in talks with Liverpool over acquiring the player.  He is without question one of the most gifted players of our time but the phrase “transparent charlatan” seems appropriate.  Brand Barca is slowly slipping, with tax scams, directorial bungs and contrived contrition.

His actions caused enough dissonance on Merseyside to damage brand Liverpool, he’ll win Barcelona football games but stands a high probability of doing the same in Catalonia.  The commitment to reform is meaningless, as he is not in a position to make good on it.  Yet.

Barcelona led the way on establishing an ethical, aspirational, football brand.  I think they’ve forgotten what I’m hoping we learn.

The 10-in-a-row CQN Charity Golf Day takes place at the magnificent Aberdour course on Friday.  This year we will hear from Celtic legend, Frank McGarvey, and former Glasgow lawyer after dinner specialist, Len Murray.

This year we are raising money for Glasgow the Caring City and The Cookiejar Foundation.  We have two copies of this magnificent canvas, signed by Billy McNeill, one is available to the highest bidder on ebay here.

The other is available for raffle.  Every donor to this JustGiving page gets an entry in the raffle.  The minimum donation is £1, which we can all afford to participate in, although you can donate as much as you want.  Our thanks to @BarryMcGonigle for the image on the canvas and OPG Graphics for creating the work.

Glasgow the Caring City said, “Glasgow the Caring City is Glasgow’s people’s charity.  As well as working with the underprivileged in our own city the charity has delivered literally millions of pounds of overseas aid and development gifts-in-kind on a shoestring budget.

“From educational supplies to soap and medicines, from tents and warm clothes to prescription glasses.  We once delivered a donated fire truck! Having provided emergency relief to war, famine, flood and earthquake victims in the past the charity would love to take this relatively quiet time in terms of world emergency to invest in its development projects, taking children out of war and teaching them in agricultural sustainability projects.

“The support of the CQN community has always been received with huge gratitude, thank you once again for supporting us this year.”  Rev Neil Galbraith.

The Cookiejar Foundation was set up in memory of Christopher Coutts who died from Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at the age of 19.  Money raised from this raffle will go towards the Cookiejar’s providing of vein finders for the Chemotherapy wards at the Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy & cancer wards in the Western General Hospital, Edinburgh.

In 1964 as back up to John Fallon we signed a Hibbee reserve goalie who was shown the door by the Big Mhan, the same goalie who had saved them from relegation 2 seasons before, the same goalie that was the youngest player at 14 to represent a Scottish League side, the same player who was chosen by Matt Busby to represent a GB side in the Olympics, the same player who was mourned by Toon fans when he left with 2 FA Cup badges in his pocket…..and the same player who’s da played for and captained the deid team and the national side and was on the park when John Thompson suffered his fatal injury.

How did we fans take it, as far as I can recall he would be there in the reserves carrying out the role that was originally intended for Jock.

BTW Jock got 4 grand for him…no bad for a has been who was looking at joining Berwick in a player-manager role.

Why can’t we look on Craig Gordon the same way.

Seems there is a cabal on genre that try to wring a negative out of every action the club make.

    Sad, sad people.

Perhaps it is because they only joined the Celtic family late on and didn’t experience the character forming years of the 50s/ 60s, when it really was win, lose or draw.

    Spoilt weans, so they are.

Tontine Tim- when Craig Gordon is fit, he’s a good goalie, no question.

The problem is that we have signed a few players recently with pretty thick case notes and sadly they’ve spent a lot of time injured.

Would you buy an ole second hand car knowin’ it had been through a chop shop?

“We received two emails from Google this morning – six of our articles had been partially hidden from Google’s search engine due to the EU’s right to be forgotten law.

“Three were about a now-retired Scottish Premier League referee, Dougie McDonald, who was found to have lied about his reasons for granting a penalty in a Celtic v Dundee United match.”

Could be used for spare parts!

It all depends on how much is spent on the medical research projects.

  8. Is Craig Gordon not getting a pay as you play deal? Obviously he will have some kind of basic written into that and probably be some assurances around his fitness that a contract can be cancelled. Doesn;t look much of a risk at all.

I cancelled my Sky Sports at the end of last season. Won;t be getting it back on. I get BT sports through Virginmedia for free anyway.

Failing not making a game it will be the radio for me.

*Fully concur with you, I know some will talk about the 90s as if it was a badge of honour, my da came through the post war years and the years in the wilderness with the 5 sorrowful mysteries, he only saw the early 90s and left this world as the Bunnet came in. He did see the Coronation Cup, double of 53/54 and the 7-1 game but not much else to crow about.

I recall telling him that I had read that on the day I was born we had won 3-2.”Must have been one of the very few games we won that year then” he said.

Celtic isnae a hobby or a past time, it’s a way of life…..and he was the wee mhan that bestowed that on me.

  14. Tontine Tim

He will get some kind of basic. Not much I would reckon. Gordon can either take the deal on offer and try and rescue is career or work for the BBC.

If he has confidence he is fit it’s a no brainer for him.

Prove himself and sign a better deal.

    tontine,

If he is sitting on the bench, then I would assume that he is part of the playing squad and ready for action, like any other sub.

Back in the day, it was one of life’s great pleasures to emerge on the terracing on the first home game of the season.

  20. Re the World Cup, I must have missed the brilliant football on show , when occasionally tuning into the nightly games. Most of the time, there are packed mid-fields; most forwards instructed to gather the ball and pass it sideways, backwards; bunches of guys rolling about after the merest touch; after the merest touch, idiot commentators screaming for a penalty due to the contact; forwards who cannot shoot ; sub-text of look what you can do with a team of triers England; English based tv companies wanting the European teams to loose …..

….. and another thing , is this not the most unlikeable Brazilian team ever, Neymar, Luis, Danny Alves, Ferindinho, Marcello etc ……

Not sure this World Cup has taken the game forward , defensively shocking with mostly risk free, packed mid fields. Has the standard of international ever been worse?

H/TIM- I’ll be tickin’ the box that says ‘workplace adaptations’

    Maybe makin’ the goals smaller.

Many years ago we took a risk on a player with a bad injury history[ Paul Elliott] and successfully resurrected his career.

Unfortunately recently our record with this type of player has been poor[ Berrigter, Mouyokolo].

It seems an unnecessary risk; what we should be doing is looking at the young, third choice ‘keepers at big clubs in England, which is where after all we found the ole Wall.

    EL,

My loyalty was always to the club.

I don’t have the ability to separate the club from the company.

I consider that a new concept, which appears to have spread to some of our own.

The symbol of the shamrock (not the four leafed clover) and the three legged milking stool are, for me, the three elements that make the club.

The Board, the playing staff and the support.

All three must function as one for the club to be successful.

Also the amount of criticism that John Collins takes for trying to better himself, he next to Paul McStay was one of our more faithful players and could possibly have left earlier than he did…sourpuss wanted him….for some of you critics…why did you leave hame.

I once heard an interview from Kevin Keegan on Desert Island Discs where he said he was leaving the park after an international in Johannesburg (I think) and was approached by an english fan who said along the words of “Kevin Keegan I used to worship the ground you walked on until you left us for your deutschmarks” to which KK responded about that’s the way it is in such a short career and then asked the punter what he was doing there. His response was that he had come down from Saudi where he could make 3 times the money he would make in the ‘pool. As KK said it was alright for him but not me.
