Tarnished football brands, Europe recovers, Craig Gordon

555

Lots of credit to the USA and Switzerland, who bowed out of the World Cup in dramatic fashion yesterday, leaving four European and four Latin American teams fighting out for the spoils.  Europe has recovered from its shaky group stage performance, keeping the door open a little longer for smaller European nations.

While plaudits for a fine tournament will be spread far and wide, the tournament has not provided a breakthrough credit for Africa, Asia, or the USA, none of whom will find the going any easier when the bandwagon reaches Eastern Europe four years from now.

Surprised it’s taken this long to get a deal sorted for Craig Gordon.  Considering the player’s lengthy injury history, Celtic have perhaps delayed to allow fitness tests over an extended period.  I’m treating tabloid comment that the potential arrival of Craig is linked to Fraser Forster moving on as idle mischief.  We need three keepers and usually have three, as do most top clubs.

So, a day after Luis Suarez issues a heartfelt mea culpa, Barcelona let it be known they are in talks with Liverpool over acquiring the player.  He is without question one of the most gifted players of our time but the phrase “transparent charlatan” seems appropriate.  Brand Barca is slowly slipping, with tax scams, directorial bungs and contrived contrition.

His actions caused enough dissonance on Merseyside to damage brand Liverpool, he’ll win Barcelona football games but stands a high probability of doing the same in Catalonia.  The commitment to reform is meaningless, as he is not in a position to make good on it.  Yet.

Barcelona led the way on establishing an ethical, aspirational, football brand.  I think they’ve forgotten what I’m hoping we learn.

The 10-in-a-row CQN Charity Golf Day takes place at the magnificent Aberdour course on Friday.  This year we will hear from Celtic legend, Frank McGarvey, and former Glasgow lawyer after dinner specialist, Len Murray.

This year we are raising money for Glasgow the Caring City and The Cookiejar Foundation.  We have two copies of this magnificent canvas, signed by Billy McNeill, one is available to the highest bidder on ebay here.

The other is available for raffle.  Every donor to this JustGiving page gets an entry in the raffle.  The minimum donation is £1, which we can all afford to participate in, although you can donate as much as you want.  Our thanks to @BarryMcGonigle for the image on the canvas and OPG Graphics for creating the work.

Glasgow the Caring City said, “Glasgow the Caring City is Glasgow’s people’s charity.  As well as working with the underprivileged in our own city the charity has delivered literally millions of pounds of overseas aid and development gifts-in-kind on a shoestring budget.

“From educational supplies to soap and medicines, from tents and warm clothes to prescription glasses.  We once delivered a donated fire truck! Having provided emergency relief to war, famine, flood and earthquake victims in the past the charity would love to take this relatively quiet time in terms of world emergency to invest in its development projects, taking children out of war and teaching them in agricultural sustainability projects.

“The support of the CQN community has always been received with huge gratitude, thank you once again for supporting us this year.”  Rev Neil Galbraith.

The Cookiejar Foundation was set up in memory of Christopher Coutts who died from Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at the age of 19.  Money raised from this raffle will go towards the Cookiejar’s providing of vein finders for the Chemotherapy wards at the Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy & cancer wards in the Western General Hospital, Edinburgh.

The Barca mole, I’ve heard my dad mention Billy Price but don’t know anything about him. He said Malcolm MacDonald was the most underrated he had seen.

IanBhoy, my dad said if Charlie added a bit more bite to his fantastic technique, he would have kept either Bobby or Bertie out of the team. I’m glad Charlie played a massive part in our history with those two assists.

Most underrated player for me ,although still revered,is Bobby Lennox. When the chat starts about greatest teams/ players,I always think Bobby gets left behind a wee bit.I wish we had a stat of goal assists for his era,add that to his goal record . Phenomenal Celtic player.

  7. Thanks to everyone who has bid for the Big Billy autographed 67 canvas ans also those who have bought raffles for the self same canvas. Our charities for the golf day are Glasgow the Caring City (fantastic charity) and the one you might not have heard of, the local Aberdour one, the Cookiejar Foundation.

If you buy a raffle, you won’t have a ticket sent to you but I’ll put a ticket in a box for you and do a raffle on Sunday night. Doing this via a Justgiving page which was already set up saves time and you know the money is going straight to the charity. I know you weren’t thinking it wasn’t, but doing it this way just made sense.

I’m doing and have done other stuff for the Cookiejar. The charity was formed by the parents of Chris Coutts who died last June at the age of 19 from Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. I used to teach Chris and he was a lovely boy. Chris’s parents were, and still are, devastated but they’ve formed this charity to help others. I’m just doing my bit as so many others do, delighted to help them in any way. Some have done a lot more than me, apologies for the DR link but only paper to cover this particular story http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/local-news/aberdeen-student-thomas-main-run-3473403

I believe that “sure it’s a grand old team to play for..” was indeed a Belfast Celtic song.

Glen Daly recorded our version in 1961 and somewhere in our family archives we have a 33 rpm vinyl, purchased at its release by my dad in the wee record shop in the Schipka Pass near Glasgow Cross.

The Hail Hail verses were added on later.

  10. …thanks to one of of the guys who posted a link with a RD fan question session on googlesomething earlier …..

…. i like the cut of this guy’s (RD) jib …. he thinks Messi has lost it in some way … lost the hunger and desire – prefers Ronaldo, as he’s the ultimate professional. Go RD.

To me, possibly by circumstance rather than design, we may have brought RD, JC and JK together … some how, we may have stumbled upon that magic formula, that perfect balance of individuals, who together, achieve something extraordinary.

So, in the highly likely event, we fail at this trio’s first CL hurdle, cut them some slack. ….

It will be worth the wait.

Rye, going by footage of games from mid sixties to when Luggy left for Morton, he looked to be an accomplished player and the perfect foil for Cesar.

Parkhead, Charlie sounds as though his game would be more suited to how it’s played today.

Burghbhoy, Tam done a great job for us. He was better as a defender than striker and a better defender than the Bear. Him swinging on the bar after Davie Provan’s equaliser in the 1985 cup final was almost as enjoyable as the free kick,

Charlie Gallagher only really came to prominence at Celtic when Big Jock redefined football.

Prior to that, we had two wing halfs and two inside forwards.

These positions required strength and energy to run and tackle as well as supply supply the ball to the wingers.

Charlie was never suited to that style and was considered “soft” for the inside forward role.

However, when the game evolved into the midfielder era, Charlie was in his element.

The first player I recall commanding the position was John White, a Scottish Internationalist, who played with Spurs.

Apart from his pale pallor, his ability to drift unseen into dangerous position and his superlative passing ability, earned him the nickname of The Ghost.

Gallagher played in a similar manner, plus he possessed a powerful, accurate shot.

Ahead of his time was Charlie Gallagher.

Incidentally, White was tragically killed by lightening on a golf course, whilst still in his prime.

Bada, I was in tears after the 1970 European Cup not just because we lost but I was promised my first Celtic strip with number 11 on the shorts if we won. Lemon was my favourite at the time. Thankfully, my parents got me the strip. Bobby Charlton’s words about the buzzbomb spoke volumes about how good he was.

Barca & Parkhead, I would have loved to have seen Malcolm & Wullie at their flowing best. Its a pity today’s video technology was not available sixty years ago so we could see how ggod were in relation to some of today’s millionaire footballers throughout Europe without any talent.

Parkead, Big Mick O’Connell took me to a Celtic Killie game at Rugby Park when Wullie was manager there. He told me Killie played the way Wullie did, fast attacking football which made me wish I could have seen him play. Unfortunately, his Killie team couldn’t defend but were briiliant to watch.

Malcolm MacDonald’s name crops up often when we quote our fathers’/grandfathers’ favourite player.

My father also rated him as his favourite.

I remember, as a child, seeing him playing in an Old Crocks match at Lochburn Park, in Maryhill.

He had the ball at his feet and was hemmed in by two opponents at the corner flag.

With a shimmy of his hips, the two lads were left staring at the “empty” flag as Malcolm strolled along the byline.

Still remember that incident sixty years later.

    Coopers Original early 90s audio.

Cooper has a lot to say about the Grand Master Pike, not so much in this link but throughout his Mystery Babylon series.

Always remember that when the Masons (and All Secretive and Organised orders) are being Exposed WORLDWIDE, there is no doubt many Masons etc will be distorting the original Shortwave Bill Cooper ‘Mystery Babylon’ series and making a lot of money from it, WHO even knows, maybe Bill was a part of The Plan. And there is no doubt about it, Bill didn’t know everything, a lot of his stuff has turned out to be nonsense, he uses the book Holy Blood Holy Grail, IMO, to take away the Divinity of Christ, many have.

I noticed TSD, never done that and basically called out Bill Cooper almost as soon as he came on this site.

Perhaps TSD is an Angel, never, ever say Never. A Dark Angel bringing out the Worst in anyone he can, who could that really be, when we live in these Times?

Is he really a Dark Angel howevaah? I really dinnae think so, that is just my Opinion.
