Tarnished football brands, Europe recovers, Craig Gordon

555

Lots of credit to the USA and Switzerland, who bowed out of the World Cup in dramatic fashion yesterday, leaving four European and four Latin American teams fighting out for the spoils.  Europe has recovered from its shaky group stage performance, keeping the door open a little longer for smaller European nations.

While plaudits for a fine tournament will be spread far and wide, the tournament has not provided a breakthrough credit for Africa, Asia, or the USA, none of whom will find the going any easier when the bandwagon reaches Eastern Europe four years from now.

Surprised it’s taken this long to get a deal sorted for Craig Gordon.  Considering the player’s lengthy injury history, Celtic have perhaps delayed to allow fitness tests over an extended period.  I’m treating tabloid comment that the potential arrival of Craig is linked to Fraser Forster moving on as idle mischief.  We need three keepers and usually have three, as do most top clubs.

So, a day after Luis Suarez issues a heartfelt mea culpa, Barcelona let it be known they are in talks with Liverpool over acquiring the player.  He is without question one of the most gifted players of our time but the phrase “transparent charlatan” seems appropriate.  Brand Barca is slowly slipping, with tax scams, directorial bungs and contrived contrition.

His actions caused enough dissonance on Merseyside to damage brand Liverpool, he’ll win Barcelona football games but stands a high probability of doing the same in Catalonia.  The commitment to reform is meaningless, as he is not in a position to make good on it.  Yet.

Barcelona led the way on establishing an ethical, aspirational, football brand.  I think they’ve forgotten what I’m hoping we learn.

The 10-in-a-row CQN Charity Golf Day takes place at the magnificent Aberdour course on Friday.  This year we will hear from Celtic legend, Frank McGarvey, and former Glasgow lawyer after dinner specialist, Len Murray.

This year we are raising money for Glasgow the Caring City and The Cookiejar Foundation.  We have two copies of this magnificent canvas, signed by Billy McNeill, one is available to the highest bidder on ebay here.

The other is available for raffle.  Every donor to this JustGiving page gets an entry in the raffle.  The minimum donation is £1, which we can all afford to participate in, although you can donate as much as you want.  Our thanks to @BarryMcGonigle for the image on the canvas and OPG Graphics for creating the work.

Glasgow the Caring City said, “Glasgow the Caring City is Glasgow’s people’s charity.  As well as working with the underprivileged in our own city the charity has delivered literally millions of pounds of overseas aid and development gifts-in-kind on a shoestring budget.

“From educational supplies to soap and medicines, from tents and warm clothes to prescription glasses.  We once delivered a donated fire truck! Having provided emergency relief to war, famine, flood and earthquake victims in the past the charity would love to take this relatively quiet time in terms of world emergency to invest in its development projects, taking children out of war and teaching them in agricultural sustainability projects.

“The support of the CQN community has always been received with huge gratitude, thank you once again for supporting us this year.”  Rev Neil Galbraith.

The Cookiejar Foundation was set up in memory of Christopher Coutts who died from Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at the age of 19.  Money raised from this raffle will go towards the Cookiejar’s providing of vein finders for the Chemotherapy wards at the Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy & cancer wards in the Western General Hospital, Edinburgh.

Tontine Tim, that’s one of the reasons I believe we are truly blessed. My Da and my maternal Granda would regale us with the stories and I still remember not only the names of the players but the way in which the names were said… Awe and wonder… God Bless… TBM

Bobby Lennox is my choice. Strangely underestimated during the glory years even though he was a goal machine. This may have been down to fact he played with players of higher quality like Johnstone and Murdoch, which perhaps unfairly moved Bobby down the list of greats. His frightening pace, timing of runs and fabulous goals tally (for an outside or inside left remember) gets him into my top 10 Celtic players seen.

Lennox is the classic example of many fans not realising how good he was till his career was over. My old man holds his hands up to that.

Burghbhoy, my unreliable memory recalls an article in the View around the time of our centenary. It said that the song originated from Belfast Celtic. It also stated that we were sued by the owners of the rights to the Music Man because of ithe song’s similarity to 76 Trombones. We won the case because the similar musical phrases were common in many old folk tunes…. or maybe I dreamed that.

    Misty water-colored memories

    Of the way we were

    Scattered pictures,

Of the smiles we left behind

Smiles we gave to one another

    For the way we were

Can it be that it was all so simple then?

Or has time re-written every line?

Tell me, would we? Could we?

    We simply choose to forget

Andy Murray has never said anything about independence, and his pretty innocent remark about Alex Salmond waving the saltire –

His quote: “I was upset by the reaction to the saltire being waved.” – was deliberately spun and blatantly misreported as an anti-SNP/Yes/Alex Salmond stance. It was not reported correctly but what do you expect from our MSM and the BBC

Bad-mouthing arguably our greatest ever sportsman makes all the Yes campaign appear petty – especially so when he’s said nothing either way.

That was the trap and I am sad so many accept this version.

However looking at the BBC Sport reports online of his last two games all I can say is Congratulations Andy Murray.

    You’re Scottish again!

I’m going to suggest that the quote you posted is made up.

Now, ask yourself this, who would make up a quote like that, and why would they do it?

And would you buy a used car from them?

  11. Have just emailed Google and told them to remove any stories they have about me with Claudia Schiffer and Elle Macpherson.

(I could lie to you and say they were both at the same time, but no, there were a couple of hours in between)

  12. Two things from me !

I don’t want Craig Gordon…..I am not a biased person….but I cannot forget the Hearts game and him coming up as an attacker….the only time he ever did it. Just anti-Celtic, that’s all it was. Would rather have Andy Gorham, at least he made it clear he was anti- Celtic.

I think Bobby Lennox has been recognized as one of the Celtic “greats”. Amazing stamina and goal scoring record. It was a team full of star players. The only under rated guy was probably John Clark….and what a career and life he has had. Another “great”.

    Great to be a Tim

Derek Sands Andy Murry didn’t say he didn’t like Alex Salmond waving the saltire. What he actually said was he didn’t like the negative reaction Alex Salmond got for waving the saltire. Its the MSM again with selective editing. He hasn’t given an opinion either way on the referendum

Francis Lillis We should note than Andy Murray almost daily has microphones pushed under his nose, he has had great opportunity to denounce a saltire waving episode, but he has not. He has not even commented on independence in public. The ‘no’ campaign can’t simply adopt him.

Rangers Fans For Independence I have read most of the ‘Tabloids’ that have reported this story and each of them say that Andy Murray is disgusted with Alex Salmond waving the Saltire at Wimbledon. However, each of them also quote Andy Murray as saying “I didn’t like it” nothing else in any of the main Tabloid articles is attributed directly to Andy Murray. They all say what Andy Murray is alleged to have said but nothing, and I mean nothing else is in inverted commas indicating a direct quote. The fact that every single Tabloid has adopted this peculiar method of narrative is strange to say the least and hints at a possible concerted campaign by the Tabloids ‘Working Together’ to smear the First Minister’. Why else would they only quote directly “I didn’t Like it” yet nothing else in any of their articles?

Not a Celtic or football post. Reader discretion advised :o)

Just a thought on AM and that day.

I think in the circumstances – he just won Wimbledon and broken the British hoodoo – that the waving of any Scottish flag would have been fine, as would the Welsh etc. It was who actually unfurled it, when he chose to unfurl it, and where he was sitting at the time. It smacked then and now of political manipulation of the win by a Scot, by another Scot who had his eye on the opportunity to exploit that win for his own ends. It was a perfect photo opp for the media and AS knew that. I suspect that he was even advised about when to do it for maximum effect.

Just my opinion. I do not think that Andy Murray wants to get caught in the crossfire on the issue and is not any more anti Scottish than anyone else who has still to decide or has indeed decided to vote no. Salmond drew him into the crossfire by his actions, and thought he could get away with it. Self promotion of the highest order and no thought for the person and player. How I see/saw it.

    Again, just my opinion

If Murray had won again this year, would Salmond have a saltire up his duke?

Was he at Andy Murray’s games in this years tournament?
