Tasteless Gerrard goes on 11th hour of 11th day of 11th month

233

Steven Gerrard went on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month.  It is as though he was trolling those who yesterday were his comrades.  No matter what we think of the other lot, you or I would have more taste than to do that to them.  He could have waited another hour.

To Celtic fans, he will forever be the man who clung on after a curtailed season and then stopped 10-in-a-row, but we will lament today, as Gerrard leaves Glasgow.  He was a walking UB40 manager, one League Cup semi-final defeat away from being able to sing, “I am the one in 10…. a statistic, a reminder”, of nine failed campaigns.

For months, I wrote here that I wanted him to stay.  Celtic’s complete collapse last season made the league a non-event.  Gerrard oversaw another year of massive and unsustainable overspend, and coasted to the title.  Despite this, his squad was unmarketable, planning was all about consumption today, to hell with tomorrow.

The main reason I wanted him to stay, however, turns out to be false.  Gerrard’s current contract was signed after it became public knowledge that Brendan Rodgers had a £9m release clause in his Celtic contract.  Surely, I assumed, those sharp minds at Ibrox would tie Gerrard down on nothing less than the same terms.  Newco need £9m more than they need a manager who can only win when there is no opposition.

However, Villa will pay £4.5m compensation to deprive Newco of their management team.  Lots of things in football are out of your control, but the figure required to adequately compensate a club to allow their manager to break his contract?  Someone slipped up here, and on this occasion, it was not Gerrard.

£4.5m will keep the lights on for another three weeks, if they don’t need to pay compensation for the next guy.  Anyone in a job is likely to cost as much, if not more.  Now comes the work of attracting a quality candidate to a club in the 10th year of living beyond its means.  Some sort of miracle worker, would be ideal.

  1. Quite surprised the bhoys getting so excited with the scousers departure . Never thought his management skill was a problem to us , we handed him 1 league title , handed him it on a plate ,we all witnessed it . But whether it’s the scouser or Micky mouse ,nothing will change , the SFA / SPFL, will still be here , the Lanarkshire referee,s association them too will still be here . BBC SKY ,CLYDE , TALKSPORT , THE SCOTTISH MEDIA . Just one rat deserted the ship , the rest decided to stay on to continue the sham of Scottish football .

Ange Postecoglou says he “lit a few candles” each time one of his Celtic players featured on international duty. All returned injury free.

  4. GVB,33% win rate in China,!!!!!! How will our media spin that if he is up for the job.

Who will be in charge of the Gerrard less ones in the lead up to next weeks semi v Hibs.A few not even arriving back till later in the week.

    Hibees might be a punt.

  5. murray davidshun might be a good punt for us as he would abandon the Perth Saints just before we play them in the LC semi.

    ••••••••••••••••••

Who knows how he would turn out under Ange.

I don’t mean to demean you’re point, I saw a few rabbits waiting to be pulled out of a hat, at Ross County, under Malky McKay, a powerful right back, and two handy players in midfield who’s names escape me just now, but worth a look. 👍 hh

  7. rangers NEED to balance the books in order to sell the club off – they will sacrifice their best players to do that and probably a league or two or three in the process. Gerrard will simply be the scapegoat!

  8. lets all do the huddle on

i would like to think we have enough confidence in our players and management to think we have a decent chance of beating St j at hampden regardless of who their manager is

  9. Certainty: The next Ibrox boss will be a ‘name’, as was the erstwhile one. A string of honours matter little – an established elite manager will not be attracted.

Possibility: Lampard would fit the bill perfectly, however apparently Norwich have enticed him. GVB would appease the fans. I would fear the likes of Chris Wilder, or, Daniel Farke more. Whoever he is will not be in a job at the moment…….probably.

  10. I don’t understand the Villa decision to appoint Gerrard. It’s a big wealthy club with the resources to acquit itself fairly well in the EPL and, possibly, in Europe. There is little to recommend the appointee as the person best equipped too fulfil their ambitions.

Certainly, Sevco had a reasonable run in Europe last time out and have had some recent success against a floundering Celtic. Still, he appears to be nowhere near the ‘elite manager’ category – and Villa are stuck with him.

  11. Cannae believe awe this scheidt about how much money they will pull in after selling the likes of that kunt, aribo etc, ffs they still huvnae paid for them yet.

  12. Not sure why some are critical of P67’s first paragraph. I’ve read numerous Sevco fans saying that very same thing today.

I guess some of us are in a fragile state.

  13. Sitting here thinking

How much of the £3m wage deferral in Sevco accounts for high football dept earners

Be due to the departed manager ?

Davis and Defoe as joint Management team to save money on player and Management wages

With major disagreements in Boardroom to help along the way 🤣

  14. lets all do the huddle on

yet again ireland doing superb against portugal

but after the last game against them i was just about to stick 10 grand on portugal to win and ronaldo to score because its going the same way

but im not doing it cos i want ireland to hold on, or win

ohh, and i dont have 10 grand 😄

  15. FT: 0-0. Good result but too late.

Decent results lately and finally Stephen Kenny is getting the results he deserves.

Curious about your comment about the sad history of Lennox Castle, I looked it up and read it for myself. It was indeed sad, and I was really surprised at it. 57 years ago, I took a temporary job in Hawkhead ( now Leverndale Hospital ). I ended up playing for their team and played at Gartcosh, Hartwood, Lennox Castle, Carstairs and other institutions. Later, I transferred to Carstairs. But that is by the by.

My real point is that I was really impressed by the treatment of the unfortunate patients in Hawkhead. The food was excellent, and plenty of it. Clothing was laundered every week. Bathing was once a week. Escorted walks around the 3 mile perimeter were daily for those that were able, as was occupational therapy. Bed ridden patients in the geriatric wards were changed 2 or 3 times every shift, for 3 shifts, and were sponge bathed daily. The nursing staff were a cohesive community of mainly Teuchters, living in Hospital owned 4 in a block houses on Crookston Road on either side of Brockburn Road. Every one I met was a caring, humane person. So I am really surprised at the differences with Lennox Castle, which must come down to the management and administration. The administrator at Hawkhead was a Mr. MacDonald, who struck me as being smart and very efficient. Well, he must have been smart, because he hired me!

  17. Wait for it,wait for it,

A former Aberdeen manager now being mentioned.

    Oh dear.

Big Phil’s blog on the Teddy’s accounts today, jaw dropping.

  18. The Record has Gattuso wanting the job

Their last manager was coaching the Liverpool u18s when he was offered the job

Gattuso’s last two jobs were with Milan and Napoli, he was offered the Spurs job in the summer before something happened and he did t last 2 weeks at Fiorentina before he fell out with the owners over signing targets

Otherwise it looks like it’s a goer

  19. Still, it stops the pain for a bit and sends the teddy bears to sleep with a smile on their faces, so job done

  20. SG

We would be nowhere near automatic CL group qualification without thems overspending etc and doing well in European comps

I think it’s worth puting in the mix

I long ago reconciled myself to accepting the cheats are back when they should be deid

The coefficient is only a benefit to who wins this year.

Huns are Huns old or new

  21. night night y’all

get the league back, get quality in in january, don’t slip back into lawwellism because they’re in crisis, it worked for 9 years but failed us last year

Gattuso never went to Spurs because of tax reasons.

I was told it was because of some dodgy stuff he’d been caught saying, but whatever, he was very close to getting the job.

  23. CELTIC40ME

It was indeed dodgy stuff he was caught saying. Spurs fans sent Levy his previous racist and misogynistic comments dating back to 2008. He also sounded out against mixed marriages, LGBTQ individuals, and women playing football. He scoffed at black players being booed, saying white players also get booed.

In fact, the more I think about it, the more he sounds a match made in Heaven for the Bigotdome!
