Team of 2012 put more illustrious Celts in shade

974

Much of our Champions League history was on show last night, apart from the fragility which has accompanied Celtic so often on the road.  The game was immeasurably more difficult than any challenge we face in domestic football.  The opening minutes were so stressful, otherwise composed players were spooked, but winning is all about how you react when you are spooked.  Do you crumble and concede an early goal?

With less than three minutes on the clock, and Spartak about to take their third corner kick, how many of us thought back to early goals lost in the opening minutes of recent European adventures?

Not for this team, who reacted to being spooked by scoring a genuinely top class goal.

It wasn’t until Spartak went down to 10 men that we made them look like Motherwell (the similarity in possession, passing, composure last night and on Saturday are remarkable) but, Spartak going down to 10 men was not the deciding factor in the outcome of the game.  Kris Commons should have won a penalty when Celtic were 0-1 up and Gary Hooper was clean through on the goalkeeper at the incident which led to the red card.

Once level, with 20 minutes remaining, the stage was Celtic’s, but a more illustrious (i.e. expensive and feted) Celtic team had the same stage against a weaker opponent in Anderlecht in 2003 but ended up losing the game.  Last night Hooper, Izaguirre, Samaras, Forrest and Brown went about their business in a steady and unspectacular fashion, exuding the confidence you need to win at this level.

No result is achieved in this competition without an enormous performance; just ask those who lost in Belgium nine years ago, including the proudest man in Europe last night.

Bring on the Salt ‘n’ Sauce Rangers.

I said mess, there is a subtle difference between Dermot’s ‘affairs’ and Rangers ‘mess’, wouldn’t you agree.

  2. I do understand where you are coming from but I think the important words are “own doing and own making”. They are where they are because of what they have done.

I know they are in a mess. You know they are in a mess. Everyone knows they are in a mess. They are there because of their “own doing and own making”.

With such a bright bright light on the horizon, particularly a stormy horizon, it is a shame that disagreements over DD should crop up. Its a small matter.

What a wonderful night last night. Watching game in Manchester bar with mate Shuggy.

Only the two of us cheering the Bhoys on. Shuggy has a dislike of certain players and Big Sammi is one of them.

Every time he criticises him Sammi comes up with the goods. Next time I watch with him I am betting on Sammi to score. Ledley too if he is playing.

Any way we are two big smiling taxi drivers here in Manchester today.

So Dermot disagrees with the feelings of the majority of Celtic fans?

Quel surprise;he’s stuck with us,we’re stuck with him,and the mutual distrust and contempt is palpable.

I THINK I’LL START BOYCOTTING HIS OTHER PROJECTS AND BUSINESSES,THAT’LL TEACH HIM TO APPRECIATE US MORE!

Can’t wait to see his face when he finds out I won’t be going to his Sandy Lanes complex this year.

If more of us decide also not to go,we can give him a bloody nose…….

  7. DD knows only too well that if he says one word even hinting at negativity towards Sevco the MSM will have it plastered all over the front page, blown out of all proportion and as we all know, it makes not a jot of difference anyway.

I believe he is just giving the MSM a sample of their own spin.

Does it alter the fate of Sevco? Nope.

Will it save them from the retribution that awaits them? Nope.

Does it mean DD and other Celtic directors were conspiring with them, to keep them in the SPL? No it doesn’t!

I have absolutely no doubt at all that DD and the other Celtic directors are secretly doing what they can to ensure Sevco get what’s coming to them.

They cannot be seen to be acting against them in public.

That would only result in further animosity with potentially drastic consequences.

No. Let them go quietly. Their demise is certain.

Totally agree. A quick look at RM this morning shows a thread of 3 pages on DD’s comments. (Common concensus is that he is a “smug taig b…..d”) Had DD said what we all feel all hell would have broken loose and CFC would have deflected the story away from the main feature.

  11. Morning,

AIDEN McGeady was angry and frustrated

by Spartak Moscow’s 3-2 defeat by Celtic.

The midfielder could only look on from the

bench as his old club celebrated their first

ever away win in the Champions League

after being substituted in the 76th minute

with the scores level at 2-2.

Spartak defender Juan Insaurralde’s red card

for a professional foul on Gary Hooper

proved to be the turning point with Celtic

coming from 2-1 down to snatch the points

thanks to an own goal and a last minute

header from Georgios Samaras after a

    double from Emmanuel Emenike cancelled

    out Hooper’s 12th minute opener.

Insaurralde’s red card sent Spartak coach

Unai Emery into defensive mode with

McGeady far from happy at being

substituted after playing in an ineffective

    central role.

“This is the way the manager wants me to

play,” McGeady told Russian tv immediately

after the final whistle. “That’s it. He wants

me to play in the center. ‘Inside, inside.’

I agree with what you have said about DDs interview, platitudes regarding the Huns mean nothing at all. If he was to controversial at all we would hear nothing else for days.

Yes. Celtic FC do have lifts that are accessible from the corporate entrances. If you are unable to climb stairs you are able to use these lifts. Celtic will provide you with a letter of authorisation to use them on request. Contact the club and request access to the lifts.

    There we go.

    Daily Record headline:

Dermot Desmond wants Rangers back in the SPL.

See what you’ve done now Dermot?

The Record’s Spin is of course nonsense BUT you gave them the opportunity. That is why a lot of people are angry.

If you give the MSM an inch they’ll take a light-year and I know you were trying to be polite Dermot but you left yourself open to this by doing so whereas I don’t think Peter Lawwell would have been quite as courteous or generous. He’d have dealt in hard fact and said it is not of our making, it was theirs and Celtic have a stand alone policy and as you can see we’re doing brilliantly with it at the moment. That would have been better.

He should have played up the European aspect, talked about the vast incomes available there which outstrip games against another Glasgow team and said we wish them well in their new surroundings (out of politeness).

Now Sevco fans will latch onto this as Mainstream media talking points and say that “even your Owner (which he isn’t, he’s just majority shareholder) says we’re the same club” bla bla bla.

It may only have been a bit of courtesy but it has backfired spectacularly and I understand why a lot of people are annoyed.
