Teams with inferior resources have figured out how to play us

426

Despite benefiting from the worst goal I’ve seen conceded against Celtic, a well-drilled by no more than competent Kilmarnock team came from behind to take all three points and leave Celtic at a multi-year low yesterday.

Excuses are available: the pitch, the fact that we made six changes to the starting 11, but the reality is yesterday’s performance was little different from what we have seen so often this season.  I could make a case that we were worse still in the home win over Hamilton.  The latter performance took place on a pristine Celtic Park with Dembele and Griffiths both starting.

Two seasons on, teams with vastly inferior resources have figured out how to play us and we have not figured out how to compensate for this reality.

I trust the manager.  He has delivered and deserves our faith.  He will get it right and deliver 8-in-a-row, but I fear for our treble on Wednesday night.  Having failed to win any of our three away games against Premiership opposition, the pattern is too complete to ignore.

Apologies for the radio silence on CQN yesterday.  The server was knocked off by the volume of visitors and the recovery process caused further issues.  Been ages since this has happened, but I suppose it’s been a while since we’ve had results like this.

A team is a unit of 11 players and sometimes an average player gets space to grow in a good team.

I am not sure Hendry will ever be a good Celtic defender but the present circumstances will never enhance his ability.

That he is now chief whipping boy covers up for the failings of many.

Being a central defender is an unforgiving position as any mistake is often magnified by a goal against.

Van Dirk has sold for a fortune and yet he was and is prone to the odd mistake.

Great defenders are like gold dust and the system can either enhance or destroy their ability.

Hendry is no Kaiser Franz but he is being blamed for circumstances beyond his control and often the fault of others.

  2. Peter Lawwell and the board have appointed Brendan in charge of Football matters. They don’t speak with the players. Brendan has control of the football and scouting.

Our current malaise needs sorted by Brendan. If the whole Board resigned it would have no effect. The players are not listening to Brendan and he is not listening to them

ETims this morning suggests that Brendan has handed his notice in and will leave at the end of the season. It also suggests that the players know this and are not happy. Tierney, Boyata, Ntcham had transfers turned down. Griff, Edouard, Rogic have all signed new long contracts. Etims suggest that this is what Dembele pulled Brendan up at Training for and got his transfer

I don’t know how true this is but, something has affected the team and this rumour might explain why the players wont play.

  3. Reading all the posts today it’s obvious that we as a fan base have been let down with our board.

I feel for Brendan and some of our players.

We have took our foot off the pedal and opened the door for other clubs to take advantage of our frailties.

Good players (entertainers) cost money we have it and not using it to our detriment.

The groans from the stands are getting louder by the week.

I hope I don’t come across as hun like, always expecting to win but by feck, I expect better from our money hungry board.

  6. I feel our biggest problem is our strict adherence to a system that is detrimental to some of our players natural abilities.

KT’s slight regression in last year being a case in point.

I know, him being there in our defence/squad is symptomatic of bigger issues, but as Celtic fans it is natural to discuss our team and the unavoidable fact is his name is creeping up a lot because he is being exposed every time he pulls on the jersey.

The problem is he does not have the base level ability to work with to become a potentially solid Celtic defender in the future.

That is the difference between him and someone who you can quickly polish into a real gem such as Van Dijk or Wanyama.

The guys 23, his career path is one way unless he morphs into a modern Franco Baresi. Clearly, all the coaching in the world won’t make that possible.

The question is how long before those in charge realise it and put him out his misery – how many more times is it going to cost us? He will find his level in the game but we have to cut our losses before they amount to more than the transfer fee.

    @ BIGBHOY on 24TH SEPTEMBER 2018 1:50 PM

Is it no coincidence that the deterioration in matters occurred after a summer which was disastrous on the transfer front?

To say Brendan has control of transfers is surely not 100% accurate either. I would assume that the majority of signings are Brendan’s however, the signing of Arzani clearly was not.

If Celtic were interested in Arzani he would have been signed directly from the Aus club. As it played out, he was sold to city under the understanding he would be loaned for two years to us. Now, PL’s son works for city so I’d assume he was involved in facilitating the transfer. That would lead to the conclusion that Brendan didn’t chose the player. Particularly as he had no clue who he was when questioned in the media.

  9. Peter Lawwell does not have an ego. Anyone who says so has no understanding of him or his background.

Brendan Rodgers is in charge of ALL Football matters por cierto!

  10. BMCUW….

    I just say what I see, aka…catchphrase?

Like most, I feel let down.

We’ve all been through the shitty cheating years.

Why it sticks in my throat that we’ve downsized class wise to give thems a foothold.

Mick you know me, give the bassas nothing.??

  11. THE HANDS CANT HIT,

Tell me,where do you get your information from. You seem to know everything that goes on at Celtic Park. How much Brendan was given for transfers your latest. So,you also state as fact, that Brendan is not in charge of players in or out.”Brendan had never even heard of Arzani”.You know this how?Brendan tell you?

  12. JH getting slated for his display yesterday and quite right to , but KT’s defensive play leaves a lot to be desired and was badly at fault for being nowhere near his direct opponnet who ended up scoring.

you can have all the possession in the world and it means heehaw when you don’t do anything with the ball other than pass it backwards/sideways across the park ‘in your own half’ from KT ,JH,DB & ML then back to DB who then tries a forward pass.

we must be the only team in the world that allows their centre forward to take all the corners kicks and be the furthers away from the opposition goal at such a crucial time when trying to score a goal.

good to see Mulumba stick up for himself in the refs face following all consistent fouling he was receiving , its a pity we don’t have that attitude in any of our players ,we are to timid and just accept everything.

  13. Some guys on about ‘arrogance ‘,how arrogant is it to want rid of a guy who has gave us the Double Treble, and arguably our best manager since Jock Stein, who are we going to get who is better? Sure we have problems right now, this is when he needs to earn his corn.

  14. I thought Mulumba played well yesterday until he tired and his patience then started to grow a bit thin with the constant fouling on him, unprotected from the referee. I think he could play alongside Ntcham and give Broonie a wee rest every now and again as he has the dynamism to keep the team moving at the right tempo por cierto.

He is quoted in the media saying as much.

I also quoted the story from Paddy McCourt where he explained that he was purchased above Strachan’s head. So there is precedent for such action.

  16. I think some guys on here, never supported the team when Macari, Brady,Dr Jo,Barnes, Mowbray were in charge.

  17. There’s at least 1 precedent for us signing players who were not identified by the manager.

Paddy McCourt was identified and pushed through by Dermot Desmond.

We have constant issues with Desmond interfering in managerial appointments.

Its alarming if our manager hadnt heard of a young creative player who made 3 appearances at the World Cup! What market are we actually planning to shop in going forward?!

I know Strachan will admit to Paul Telfer but not so sure he’ll say Du Wei was a long term target. And according to Roy Keane Strachan told him he didnt care if he signed or not!

  20. Brendan Rodgers is in charge of ALL Football matters por cierto!

    —————-

Let’s assume you’re correct. Brendan is still totally reliant on the board to facilitate player transfers and contract renewals that improve/maintain our squad.

Do you think our board have been diligent in regards to supporting Brendan in the transfer market? ( especially this summer ) .

    HH

  21. Martin O’Neil was the last manager before Brendan Rodgers to have control of ALL matters re the football dept. But when Brian Quinn made it known to the board that we were heading for disaster if we didn’t hem in our spending and wages, then it changed. Our wages probably need to be curtailed slightly now though, by removing players who are not playing anywhere near a regular basis. But, again, BR will determine who goes and who stays por cierto.

  22. !!BADA BING!! on 24TH SEPTEMBER 2018 2:23 PM…

Most are just angry with the inaction of the board with the last transfer window.

It’s knew to us having the new monkeys looking down on us, we need to control them as it safer for us all.

    HH

  23. If we turn up to play teams with inferior resources like Hearts and Killie with the likes of Hayes, Kouassi, Hendry, Christie and Sinclair in the starting 11 then these sides won’t be thinking inferior, they’ll be looking to take points from us.

I dislike singling out any player but Hendry is just another in a long line of SPL players who can’t cut it for Celtic, I can only think of McNamara, Brown and Armstrong as successful signings, 3 in 20 odd years, McGinn probably would have been too.

Just pick the best 11 available and we’ll sort this.

you are right in that Hendry isnt to blame for getting a game, he shouldnt have been there in the first place, but to put it into context he is our 5th choice centre back, so im absolving him of most of the blame.

As for those wanting rid of BR be careful what you wish for.
