Techniques to deliver titles

393

I’ve never known Celtic to subsidise an away match ticket before. Put aside for a second thoughts of thanking the fans for their support during a difficult period (which are valid), I like this move for the message it sends to those in the dressing room, as well as the stands.

We are in a league race, and we want to win it. You can understand Aberdeen’s razor-sharp appetite. They’ve not won the league in over 30 years, every man, woman and child in their ranks will be forgiving of faults and profuse in praise.

By contrast, this will be our five-in-a-row, the 11th title in 16 years. It will never come close to what we experienced in 1998, when we worshipped the words of Wim Jansen after a late-season home draw against soon-to-be-relegated Hibs.

For many of us, 1998 was our Celtic supporting high point – it meant that much. Hopefully we will never again be in a place where a domestic title has such importance. Instead we need to find techniques to deliver that edge, to remind us of the importance of getting it right in every league season.

I refer to that Hibs game in 1998 often, it felt like a pivotal moment. We were nip and tuck for the title, what would have been an historic 10-in-a-row title, one which would have violated one of Jock Stein’s teams’ records. That day, it felt like the chance was slipping, but there would be no let-up. We bundled our nerves together and moved on.

Telling the world that the club is subsidising fans’ ticket costs is one technique to help deliver a little bit of that focus. Let’s hit the plastic running on Saturday.

I, too, prefer Ronny but not because Neil ` had his chance`. My preference is simply because I believe Ronny is a better Manager.

Don’t think subsidising an away game has been done before, certainly never for an away game in a title run in, still this highly unpopular ‘Celtic board’ have never been so unpopular, with potentially all hell set to break loose, should one or two unimaginables occur, they’ve got to try something to boost business, and help the fragile squad over the winning line.

Res 12 crossed my mind when the ticket subsidy was announced, call me cynical?

Ticket pricing should be under a major review at Celtic, just like it is continually in England, not just for away games but at home too. We may not have the TV revenue, but we’ve a generation to entice and install at Celtic Park, one that has to resign itself that cheating wasn’t contested, and anything goes for justice, in the SPL where Celtic are treated differently, nearly every week.

We’ve to carry on regardless paying top dollar and just send complaints “Points of View” style to the SFA regarding the competition we are asked to continue to support, one that we now known is bent?

This Celtic board must do better than ticket gestures.

At the risk of being accused of rabble rousing what follows is the text of a letter I have just sent off to SFA.

    To Whom It May Concern:

About this time last year I contacted you in the wake of your acting against the then Celtic player Guidetti for his bringing the Scottish game into disrepute by singing a song on Dutch television that was deemed by you to be disrespectful to a Scottish club.

In commending your action, I queried as to what action you would be taking concerning the sectarian and racist outbursts (from that legendary small minority of spectators), bringing the Scottish game into disrepute on live television, that had formed much of the off the field background to the League Cup semi final played at Hampden on February 1st, 2015.

The last I heard from you on the above was, that some ten months ago, my letter had been passed to ‘the appropriate department’.

Past experience makes it not unreasonable to expect more of the same Scottish Football reputation damaging, sectarian and racist behaviour from the exact same legendary small minority of spectators, at the forthcoming Scottish Cup Semi Final due to be contested by Rangers and Celtic at Hampden on April 17th.

Could you please advise what plans ‘the appropriate department’ has in place to prevent and ultimately deal with the above?

    Respectfully

Was at the game with Wee BGFC – too busy hurling abuse at the cheating ref and linesman for Boyata’s sending off (subsequently upheld by the SFA btw) to notice the singing to be honest.

There was, now you come to ask, a fair rendition of “At the Rising of the Moon” from just behind me (they forgot some of the words, so it wouldn’t class it as ‘good’). But that’s about them United Irishmen fellas – nothing to do with the IRA, so that should be OK to sing, shouldn’t it?

Another embarassing songs investigation. Nice one. Thanks for that. At times like this, one can only sympathise with the club.

  14. It is understandable that some get frustrated at the qualities of players in the squad – we all want to have top class talent representing our club.

However in the marketplace that our finances determine we shop in, what can we expect?

Yes there are many who don’t make the grade and are offloaded, some like Victor,Fraser,Virgil, Hooper and now Leigh and Craig, who have been/are, spectacular successess and then there are those who settle in and become ‘journeymen’ in the squad.

I hope that Jamsie stays with us and fulfils his undoubted potential, in that case we would have in him, McGregor and Tierney, three from the academy in the first team squad – let’s hope there will be a couple more coming through in the coming season.

Sumonovic, Svaitchenko, Boyata, Armstrong, GMS, Janko, none of these have ‘set the heather on fire’ yet, however I suggest that they have a good chance of becoming important members of the squad and good enough to continue our domestic success.

My hope is that we can stop being so super critical of our players – as the rich get richer and the gap between our league and others gets ever wider, perhaps we look back on this time with a little envy.

I don’t know if we have the right management and coaching staff, however it would appear that they are quite deeply entrenched and enjoy the confidence of the board and shareholders – it looks like they are playing the long-game and implementing fundemental change in our structure – only time will tell if they are correct – however what is clear is the fact that we cannot compete in the crazy financial football world that now exists.

Perhaps we are a little over critical at times and our expectations are a bit optimistic, but I don’t think a ‘you’ve never had it so good’ attitude will wash either.

The crux of the matter is, do the fans get value for the available money the spend and does the management judiciously spend the limited money available to it?

If I went to the supermarket for groceries and came back with a couple of bargains, but had to throw a lot of the stuff out because I hadn’t realised it was unfit to put on the table, I would definitely not think I had spent my money judiciously.

if your argument is to be accepted – it leaves a question for me..if these players are more or less the same as their Aberdeen counterparts, yet are paid 4 times their wage – why don’t we just recruit at a quarter of the cost?

I think the frustrations are that we are paying 4 times the wages for same standard of player?

  21. Paul67 et al

A home draw against Hibernian late 1997-8 season? Doesn’t register with me I’m afraid. Do remember an away draw at Dunfermline though, 1-1 I think, when a victory would have given us the title. Think Arsenal won the EPL that same day. Next stop Celtic Park when some of us were to be found outside Paradise, listening to Roddy Forsyth on the radio. Tickets not so easy to come in those days.

following on to my player cost post re Aberdeen players…

There should theoretically be no AFC player who could displace any Celtic first team player.

    2 problems:

we don’t have a first 11 and secondly there are clearly a number of AFC players who would easily displace current Celtic ‘first team’ players..

McGinn ( that is galling), Hayes, Rooney ( could easily partner Griffiths and is better than Cidcti, CKR, etc), Shinnie, Logan..etc

  23. Following on from David Moyes allegedly putting himself forward for the Celtic manager’s job, looks like Sportsound tonight has Malky Mackay’s pitch. His dream job apparently!

Not convinced that RD is the man for us long term but the continual BBC’s attempts at undermining him is disgusting.

I am not saying ‘we’ve never had it so good’ – that would be nonsense bearing in mind our glorious past – what I am saying is that in this ‘crazy’ world of sport, perhaps ‘this is now as good as it gets’.

The ‘kitchen table’ analogy doesn’t stand up – we don’t throw ‘stuff’ out – we try them out and move them on if they don’t fit in – we of course do our best to mitigate losses – our overall trading performance keeps the club out of crippling debt.

  25. CULTSBHOY@5:01 – tend to agree – I have been saying for a while, that we are not getting enough ‘ bang for our (substantial) buck.

  26. BSR

But the BBC is supposedly impartial, are supposed be giving a balanced viewpoint. The only defence of RD I’ve heard on Sportsound was from Tom Boyd and he was ridiculed by the ‘experts’. Ridiculed after he had gone not whilst he was being interviewed.

While I don’t disagree that the balance of our trading keeps our heads above water, we have wasted millions on poorly scouted players who are not moved on because they don’t fit in, but because they are duds. Just like my mouldy kitchen table items.

  28. Gary 67

RD does not even get a balanced opinion on a Celtic blog.

He has been undermined by some of our own since day one.
